  • Patent number: 4757583
Abstract: A roll for use in a calender has a stationary carrier for a hollow cylindrical shell whose end portions are supported by combined radial and axial bearings surrounding annular bearing members which, in turn, surround the end portions of the carrier. The carrier defines with each bearing member a set of chambers which are sealed from the atmosphere and can receive pressurized hydraulic fluid to ensure that the end portions of the shell are biased toward a second roll with a requisite force as well that the end portions of the shell are stabilized against lateral and/or other stray movements. The fluid in the chambers ensures that the shell can be acted upon by large forces without unduly stressing the antifriction bearings. The bearing members flank a hydrostatic bearing unit which acts between the central portion of the shell and the carrier.

  • Patent number: 4757584
Abstract: A roll for use in a calender has a stationary carrier which is surrounded by a hollow cylindrical shell with the interposition of a hydraulically operated displacing unit which can flex selected portions of the shell when necessary so as to establish a preselected nip between the peripheral surface of the shell and the shell of an adjoining roll. The hydrostatic displacing unit is flanked by two antifriction bearings which operate between the carrier and the shell and are lubricated by a circuit which is independent of the circuit that supplies hydraulic fluid to the displacing unit. This renders it possible to use in the displacing unit a fluid whose temperature is much higher than the maximum permissible temperature of lubricant for the bearings. The bearings are sealed from the respective ends of the displacing unit by single seals or by multiple seals, and any leak fluid which penetrates beyond the neighboring seal is evacuated through one or more channels in the carrier and/or in the shell.

  • Patent number: 4757623
Abstract: A sign in accordance with this invention comprises a pair of end members, with each end member having a longitudinal groove, and with each of the end members having a foot portion configured such that the respective longitudinal groove bears approximately a 15.degree. relationship to the vertical. The longitudinal groove in one of the end members faces the longitudinal groove in the end member such that respective ends of a generally rectangular sign of appropriate thickness may be closely received in these grooves. Importantly, the groove in each of the end members is of dual width, with one portion of each such groove being wide and of comparatively shallow depth, whereas another portion of each of the grooves is comparatively narrow, and of greater depth. Because of this arrangement, elongate panel members of either of two different thicknesses can be readily received in a tight fitting manner in appropriate portions of the grooves.

Abstract: A display apparatus includes a mechanism for storing images on a plurality of partially transparent sheets. Each sheet includes several rows of graphic material separated by rows of transparent areas. The sheets are relatively stiff so that they do not wrinkle or buckle under their own weight and are supported on upper and lower edges by tabs. A drive mechanism brings one sheet into viewing position as another sheet simultaneously withdraws in the same direction to produce a smooth dissolve of the projected image. Silk screened stripes of material on the sheets prevent the sheets from rubbing against each other and harming the graphic information and otherwise prevent mechanical interference between the sheets. By contouring the surface of the screen, it is possible to create a three dimensional image by illuminating the rear surface with a television screen or other image storage or producing means.

Abstract: A trigger fired underwater firearm particularly adapted to defense against sharks is described. The firearm has an elongated tubular handle with a cartridge receiving head at one end, a trigger mechanism in the middle, and a safety mechanism at the other end. A longitudinal shaft extends down the tube and has a firing pin at the end which engages the firing head and a safety pin where the shaft passes through the safety mechanism to the external cocking grip. Pulling back on the cocking grip on the end of the shaft stores energy in a firing spring. The firing mechanism uses a cocking notch in the interior elongated shaft to engage a moveable pawl on the end of a firing lever extending through the tube wall. Depressing the external end of the firing lever releases the pawl from the firing notch allowing the shaft carrying the firing pin to advance under spring pressure to hit the firing pin against the cartridge primer in the head end. The cartridge fires through the open end of the head into the target.

  • Patent number: 4757629
Abstract: An electrical trigger mechanism for a gun 1 has a relatively small and lightweight firing pin 5 which is held in its stationary position shown in outline 5.sup.1 by a permanent magnet 2 or the like and in which position the firing pin is spaced apart from a solenoid coil 4.A capacitive discharge circuit discharges through the solenoid coil upon operation of the gun trigger, the movement of or pressure on the gun trigger being detected by any suitable triggering means such as an optical interrupter, a microswitch or a strain gauge. The energizing of the solenoid coil 4 is for a sufficiently short time that the magnetic field has decayed or substantially decayed by the time the firing pin reaches the coil 4. The firing pin is therefore not restrained as it passes through the coil 4 into an abuttment member 6 which has a substantially central aperture through which the firing pin 4 can project in impacting against the bullet or cartridge 9 in position within the barrel 8.
