  • Patent number: 4760668
Abstract: In order to avoid the undulation of tolerance and to reduce the time and cost of grinding, the machine and method carry out a continuous dressing of the abrasive rim by a lateral cutter-wheel. A bell grinding-wheel and its rim are moved axially in a slow movement just exceeding the amount of attrition of the grinding-wheel. Thus the abrasive rim is continuously redressed. The level of the uppermost generatrix of the diamond cutter-wheel above a table exactly determines the thickness of the ground workpiece. The cutter-wheel is rotated by a motor; a rolling effect may occur. This machine and method are suitable for very precise mass-production grinding of industrial workpieces.

  • Patent number: 4760669
Abstract: The machine comprises a frame (1) which is secured to the connections (A--A') to which the hydraulic caliper for the brake is usually secured, the caliper having been removed previously. Due to such a connection, the frame (1) will be positioned exactly and firmly with respect to the brake disc, so that by mounting on the frame a grinding equipment comprising the axial feed for the grinding wheel or wheels (15--15'), the disc (D) may be ground without disassembling it. The brake disc is caused to rotate by the grinding wheel working thereon and, optionally, by a small motor-reducer, the arrangement being such as to perform a uniform grinding of the entire surface of the disc. The spindle of the machine, preferably, carries two grinding wheels which, successively, will engage both faces of the brake disc.

  • Patent number: 4760671
Abstract: A workpiece manipulating apparatus for faceplate panels of cathode ray tubes includes a conveyor for carrying panels along two groups of grinder stations in a pattern coordinated with carriage mounted loaders which move along the conveyor. The conveyor indexes to loading stations as do the loaders. Unground panels are sequenced to the stations as the loaders are present. Loaders pick the unground panels from the conveyor and transfer them to an orienting station which orients panels for loading into a grinder. Loaders pick an oriented panel from the orienting station and load it in to the grinder at the loading station. They also pick up ground panels from the grinder and place them in a reorient station and pick ground panels from the reorient station and place them on the conveyor in the position from which they removed an unground panel. The loader advances to a next loading station to load a next grinder and the conveyor with panels picked up at the preceeding station.

  • Patent number: 4760695
Abstract: The periodic shedding of vortices produced in a highly sheared gas flow, such as that encountered at the grain transition boundary in a solid propellant rocket motor or at the combustor inlet to a ramjet engine, is a significant source of acoustic instability which may result in unstarting of the ramjet engine or excessive vibration of the rocket motor. By restricting the transition boundary or combustor inlet at the sudden expansion dump plane (5), such as by locating an orifice plate (13) at the dump plane, the gas flow is separated upstream and produces a vena contracta downstream of the orifice, inhibiting the feedback of acoustic pressure to the point of flow separation and preventing the formation of organized oscillations. Incorporation of such a simple thin plate orifice at the dump plane reduces the periodic acoustic oscillations and thereby controls the detrimental oscillatory pressure fluctuations.

  • Patent number: 4760701
Abstract: An external combustion rotary engine comprising a motor member, a free-piston combustion member and a storage tank serving also as a heat exchanger and located between the motor and the combustor. The motor rotors rotate inside an enveloping structure eccentrically with respect to a power shaft to form alternatively compression and expansion chambers. Compressed air produced thereby is ducted first to the storage tank and then to the combustor for burning fuel to produce combusted gases which are in turn ducted to the storage tank where heat is exchanged between the hot gases and the cooler compressed air. The combusted gas is then expanded in the expansion chambers. A fraction of the compressed air is further compressed to a higher pressure level so that it may be used in air pad cushions to isolate the various engine rotating parts from the fixed structures surrounding them. The use of such air cushions prevents contacts between moving parts and eliminates friction, heat production therefrom and wear.

  • Patent number: 4760703
Abstract: Several embodiments of induction systems for internal combustion engines that improve the charging efficiency, particularly at low speeds. Each embodiment employs a plenum chamber upstream of the engine throttle valve and a reed type check valve admits air to the plenum chamber so as to improve charging efficiency at low speeds by maintaining an air flow in the induction system. In accordance with some embodiments, a supercharger is also employed which discharges into the plenum chamber upstream of the throttle valve. This arrangement minimizes pulsation effects from the supercharger being transmitted to the engine intake ports. In addition, the reed type check valve can be employed in many of the embodiments to bypass the supercharger under conditions when the supercharger is not generating any significant boost. The location of the reed type check valve relative to the plenum chamber and throttle valve of the engine minimizes pulsations from being transmitted from the intake ports back to the check valve.

Abstract: A disc is disclosed which comprises a top layer, a middle layer, and a bottom layer. The top layer is placed proximate to a high temperature reactor and at least the outer surface of the top layer is made of a material which allows it to act as a substrate against which molten particles are impacted to microatomize the particles. The layers are positioned one above the other with a first space between the bottom surface of the top layer and the top surface of the middle layer, and a second space between the bottom surface of the middle layer and the top surface of the bottom layer. The top and bottom layers are joined together and stabilized by a peripheral wall around the circumferential edge of the top and bottom layer. The middle layer is fixedly mounted to the bottom layer. The middle layer is smaller in diameter than the diameters of the top and bottom layers so that a third space is defined between the inner surface of the peripheral wall and the circumferential edge of the middle layer.

  • Patent number: 4760716
Abstract: The invention concerns a process and a circular knitting machine for the production of knit goods with combed-in fibers, in which an amount of fibers synchronous with the needle cylinder rotatory speed is fed to a teasing cylinder rotating at high speed, transferred by the latter to the comb-in zone, and taken from the needles in the comb-in zone without contacting the teasing cylinder. To prevent the development of areas overfilled with fibers or short of fibers in the finished knit goods on account of the contact-less fiber feed, during or before abrupt reductions or increases in the rotatory speed of the needle cylinder, at least temporarily smaller or larger amounts of fibers are fed to the comb-in zone than corresponds to the synchronous amount of fibers.
