Patent number: H538Abstract: An apparatus and method which enables a weapon (usually on a test firing range) only when the weapon is aimed at a predetermined zone around a target. A transmitter subsystem comprising a strobe light, power supply and alignment scope is disposed at or near the target and oriented so as to transmit strobe light pulses of preselected pulse frequency, pulse duration and spectral content at a receiving subsystem. The receiving subsystem disposed at or near the weapon optically focuses the received strobe pulses on a detector, which provides electrical signals in accordance with the received pulses. These electrical signals are processed by detector electronics so that an enable signal is provided to the weapon only when a pair of pulses is detected within a preseslected time interval. In this way, the present invention prevents unwanted firing of the weapon when it is not properly aimed at the predetermined zone.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1984Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Victor A. Patent number: H543Abstract: This disclosure pertains to an electrodeposited chromium composite having ternating layers of high contraction and low contraction chromium. The laminated composite properties are enhanced because of thin layers of the same metal existing under different states of hardness, stress, orientation and microstructure. Thin layers of HC chromium are produced with a random orientation, low residual stress, and crack-free structure. The alternating LC chromium layers tend to duplicate the random structure of HC chromium through epitaxial growth. Accordingly, crack-free laminated chromium are produced having hardness values ranging from 655 to 1084 Knoop Hardness Numbers. By comparison, conventional high-contraction chromium shows hardness values between 1000 and 1100 KHN. However, the latter deposits are invariably micro-cracked.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1986Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Edward S. Patent number: H545Abstract: The present invention involves labeling monoclonal antibodies with intermediate half-life radionuclides which decay to much shorter half-life daughters with desirable high energy beta emissions. Since the daughter will be in equilibrium with the parent, it can exert an in-situ tumoricidal effect over a prolonged period in a localized fashion, essentially as an "in-vivo generator". This approach circumvents the inverse relationship between half-life and beta decay energy. Compartmental modeling was used to determine the relative distribution of dose from both parent and daughter nuclei in target and non-target tissues. Actual antibody biodistribution data have been used to fit realistic rate constants for a model containing tumor, blood, and non-tumor compartments. These rate constants were then used in a variety of simulations for two generator systems, Ba-128/Cs-128 (t.sub.1/2 =2.4d/3.6m) and Pd-112/Ag-112 (t.sub.1/2 =0.9d/192m).Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventors: Leonard F. Patent number: H548Abstract: Sets of group-complementary code arrays which have the property of being ually orthogonal over a subinterval of their total cross-correlation function have been identified. These group-orthogonal arrays are generated by a multiplication operation upon a given group-complementary array using a matrix which has diagonal elements from vectors which are orthogonal. Composite code arrays are synthesized by interleaving rows from the group-orthogonal set of arrays, and applying the resulting rows of codes to bi-phase modulate pulses in bursts. The resulting composite waveform has the desirable property of temporal (zero-Doppler) sidelobe cancellation in the maximum unambiguous range interval and response cancellation over one or more multiple-time-around range intervals of an equivalent uncoded pulse sequence.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Edward Holliday, Glenn D. Patent number: PP6362Abstract: This invention relates to a new and distinct variety of pear tree which is useful as a size-controlling rootstock. The new variety originated as a single seedling selected from a large group of pear seedlings which were grown from open-pollinated seed. This seed was collected from Old Home Pear Trees (Pyrus communis) growing in an isolated planting with Farmingdale pollinizers. Pear fruiting varieties propagated on the under stock of this new rootstock variety are approximately 80% of the size of like pear trees growing on domestic Bartlett seedling rootstocks. This "semi-dwarfing" selection is easily asexually reproduced; particularly by hardwood cuttings. It has proven to be graft compatible with all commercially grown pear varieties. It was selected for its non-rootsuckering habit, its resistance to Fireblight disease and its tolerance of Pear Decline disease. It has also proven to be hardy, early bearing and well anchored in the many areas and soil types where it was tested.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1986Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: Gordon BaileyInventor: Lyle A. Patent number: 4780931Abstract: A conversion device is provided which permits an existing self-contained meat patty forming machine to be adapted for use with a separate, high capacity meat pump, so as to increase the output capacity of the patty former. The conversion structure includes an elongated, apertured meat delivery tube adapted to be used in lieu of an existing pivotal valving tube provided with the original machine, together with an accumulator coupled to the delivery tube. Operation of the separate pumping assembly is governed by that of the accumulator, and, ultimately, the operation of the patty forming apparatus. In this fashion the speed of the separate pumping assembly can be matched with that of the patty former so as to maintain continuous, trouble free operation.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: Marlen Research CorporationInventors: Richard G. Patent number: 4780932Abstract: Electrical stunning apparatus for beef cattle or other livestock uses head restraining means to hold the animal's head in place during contact by electrodes. The animal's head is prevented from moving upwardly by a pusher which contacts the top of its head or neck, while a chin lifter moves in from below the animal's head to hold it in place. An electrode on the chin lifter contacts the animal's nose allowing a stunning current to pass through the animal's head to another electrode on the pusher (for head stunning). If deep stunning is required an additional electrode may be moved into contact with the rear of the animal to apply a heart-stopping current.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: T. Patent number: 4780933Abstract: An apparatus for reducing pressed fiber bales arranged in a row is disclosed which facilitates removal of fibers from the upper surface of the bales adjacent a stationary member (28). Transversely extending rollers (18, 19) parallel to milling rollers (4, 5) are provided with blocking means (25, 26). These blocking means may be actuated to prevent rotation of rollers (18, 19). As rollers (18, 19) are carried by housing (2) so as to extend slightly beyond the housing in the direction of travel (16). Upon reaching stationary member (28), blocking means prevents rotation of roller (19). The teeth of roller (19) act as a rake to remove fibers from bale (24a) adjacent stationary member (28) as reducing means (1) starts its travel in the return direction. In this manner, the fibers from the entire upper surface of bale (24) are more totally and uniformly removed.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: Hergeth Hollingsworth GmbHInventors: Akiva Pinto, Guenter Lucassen, Reinhard Schmidt
