  • Patent number: 4864802
Abstract: Packaging of series of relatively small articles between long webs of wide packaging laminates having faces of resilient heat sealable foam. One web is fed foam-face-up across a table, the articles to be packaged placed on it in spaced locations, heated melting shoes applied to web edges to melt the foam surfaces there, and a second web applied foam-face-down over the spaced articles and heat sealed to the lower web at its melted edges. Melting shoes can have their surfaces treated to make them essentially non-wetable by the melted foam. Transverse heat sealing and severings are effected between successive articles. The heat sealings can be set by cold pressings. Web backings can be made relatively non-porous to minimize bleed-through of melted foam. Before sealing, sandwiched articles and be pressed between upper and lower resilient fingers to urge articles to level at which they project up as much as they project down, from plane of web edges.

  • Patent number: 4864803
Abstract: To retain compressible articles such as paper towels, toilet paper and the like tightly compressed in a weldable foil, a feeding push element (3) pushes the articles into a bag and, in accordance with the invention, the bottom of the bag is yieldingly restrained to permit movement of the articles into the bag while displacing the bag against a yielding force. When the bag is filled, the counter abutment plate (6) adjacent the bottom of the bag has reached a limit or terminal position, so that articles in the bag are compressed. Hold-down elements then close over the still open end of the bag, permitting sealing of the still open bag while the articles are retained compressed. The abutment plate can then be moved out of position for further transport of the filled bag with the material retained therein in compressed condition.

  • Patent number: 4864808
Abstract: A lawn mower attachment that allows the lawn mower to pulverize the lawn clippings into a mulch. The mulching attachment mounts over the opening to the discharge chute (90). It consists of equally spaced rods (30) that form a grid. This grid permits air to escape while filtering the mulched material. Each rod (30) is suspended such that it is free to rotate about its longitudinal axis, move vertically in response to the terrain, and pivot about the suspended end. The pivot motion is constrained in angular displacement so as not to decrease the mulching capability. The vertical, rotating, and pivoting motion of the rods act to cleanse the grid and return the residue for further trituration. Limiting the grid rod motion insures grid integrity thus insuring that only properly prepared residue escapes.

  • Patent number: 4864815
Abstract: The use of a single main centrifugal fuel pump for supplying fuel to an aircraft gas turbine engine has advantages over other known systems, however a problem has existed in that the centrifugal pump, when driven in a fixed ratio to the engine speed, cannot deliver fuel at adequate pressure under engine starting conditions. The disclosed fuel supply system using a main centrifugal pump overcomes this shortcoming by having a turbine-driven start pump added to the fuel supply with both the turbine and the start pump receiving fuel pumped by the main centrifugal pump and the turbine utiliziing the high flow, low pressure fuel to drive the start pump which incresases the pressure of the fuel to a value adequate for engine starting. The start pump delivers fuel until such time as the main centrifugal fuel pump has reached a speed to provide the fuel to the engine at the required pressure, at which time the turbine is no longer driven and the output of the start pump goes to zero.

  • Patent number: 4864835
Abstract: A door latch and lock mechanism especially for storm doors and screen doors, having a latch and a lock bolt. The latch can be retracted from the outside by a button which pushes a plunger in a lengthwise direction. When the plunger is rotated in one direction it will lock the latch in the latched position and also extend the locking bolt to its locked position. When the plunger is rotated in the opposite direction, the latch is released and the bolt is retracted. The plunger is rotated in one direction or the other from the outside of the door by a key operated mechanism spaced from the push button and operatively connected to the plunger by connecting links.

  • Patent number: 4864837
Abstract: Apparatus for producing panel roofing includes a platform mounted on an elevating mechanism. A panel producing machine is mounted on a support stand which in turn rides on tracks along a length dimension of the platform. A decoiler for decoiling metal sheet stock fed into the machine also rides on tracks along the platform length. The machine is oriented to produce panels in a direction perpendicular to the platform length dimension. With the platform elevated to roof edge and its length dimension parallel to that edge, the panel producing machine and decoiler are moved along the platform following extrusion of each successive roofing panel. In a preferred embodiment, the machine can be pitched to match a pitch of the roof to facilitate panel production.

  • Patent number: 4864838
Abstract: To avoid impacts on the first pass of the rolled product through a universal rolling mill the vertical rolls of the rolling mill can be provided with their own integral drive according to our invention. In an electrical drive for a vertical roll the vertical roll is the rotor of an electric motor while the stator is a circular collar on a nonrotatable supporting axle for the vertical roll. In a hydraulic drive for a vertical roll a hydraulic motor is either located in a housing side extension of the structural member supporting the vertical roll to drive it from the outside by spur wheel gearing or by a frictional drive or the hydraulic motor is mounted in the nonrotating supporting axle of the vertical roll and engages on an inner cogged drive ring on the vertical roll from the inside by spur gearing positioned on a transverse plane.

  • Patent number: 4864842
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system which is useful on instruments requiring experimentally determined calibration curves by which calibration data can be transferred to a plurality of field gauges, thereby avoiding the necessity of individually calibrating each gauge each time calibration is necessary. The field gauges are initially cross related to a master gauge. At a later time when a new calibration is necessary, the master gauge is calibrated using carefully prepared samples of a test material. Using the experimentally derived calibration curves with the cross relation data provides calibration data for the field gauges.

  • Patent number: 4864843
Abstract: A liquid sample to be analyzed is subjected to a vaporizing step. The vaporized components are submitted to a first separation stage by introducing said components into a packed chromatography column and flowing carrier gas through said column. The effluent of the first stage is passed through a flow dividing chamber. A second separation stage is performed by passing the effluent of the flow dividing chamber to a capillary chromatography column and flowing carrier gas therethrough. After a predetermined period of time, flushing gas is introduced through the flow dividing chamber and flowed through the first-stage packed column in a direction opposite to the original direction of flow while the direction of flow remains unchanged in the capillary column.

  • Patent number: 4864844
Abstract: In order to evaluate the condensation amount in a jet engine intake duct, for calibrating the engine, apparatus are provided which induce a high speed flow of air through a duct. The duct is designed so that the air velocity within it very gradually increases along it until a choked (sonic) condition is reached. At or around sonic conditions static pressure is very responsive to changes in flow due to condensation. Thus by first obtaining a pressure profile along the duct under non-condensing conditions and then comparing this with a pressure profile under condensing conditions a condensation amount can be computed.

  • Patent number: 4864845
Abstract: For making rapid, non-destructive permeability measurements in the field, a portable minipermeameter of the kind having a manually-operated gas injection tip is provided with a microcomputer system which operates a flow controller to precisely regulate gas flow rate to a test sample, and reads a pressure sensor which senses the pressure across the test sample. The microcomputer system automatically turns on the gas supply at the start of each measurement, senses when a steady-state is reached, collects and records pressure and flow rate data, and shuts off the gas supply immediately after the measurement is completed. Preferably temperature is also sensed to correct for changes in gas viscosity. The microcomputer system may also provide automatic zero-point adjustment, sensor calibration, over-range sensing, and may select controllers, sensors, and set-points for obtaining the most precise measurements. Electronic sensors may provide increased accuracy and precision.
