Patent number: 4903392Abstract: A method for removing metallic plugs from conduits such as the heat exchanger tubes in a nuclear steam generator is disclosed herein. In such tubes, plugs formed from a cylindrical shell of Inconel are radially expanded in sealing engagement with the open end of an Inconel tube mounted in a tubesheet by pulling down a cork-shaped expander element disposed in wedging engagement with the shell. The method of the invention removes such plugs by pushing the expander element from the open end back to the closed end of the shell, and then heating the shell to a temperature which substantially lessens its tensile yield while applying a tensile force along the longitudinal axis of the plug shell sufficient to elongate it. In the method, an electrically conductive push-rod is utilized which simultaneously conducts a substantial current of electricity through the plug shell while pushing against the closed end thereof.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1988Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Mark M. Patent number: 4903411Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of typography. In this field, it is desirable to quickly and efficiently determine certain key ratios between cap height and type size of a letter in a particular typeface, in order to create various aesthetic results. In situations where variations in typeface height normally cause problems, such as: matching specimens of typeface; filling vertical spaces; and dropping caps, among others, the task of determining this ratio is complicated by the fact that typefaces with the same point size may actually differ in height, and typefaces of the same name may vary in size according to the typesetting system which produces them. In such situations, the instant invention is particularly useful.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1988Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Inventor: William S. McArdle

Patent number: 4903413Abstract: In order to measure the surface profile of a workpiece, a yoke having two fixed feet is held in contact with the surface as the workpiece is rotated. A dynamic probe is mounted on the yoke by means of a transducer which outputs a signal dependent upon the position of the dynamic probe relative to a transducer datum. The fixed feet and the foot of the dynamic probe have a similar shape and size so that they detect irregularities in the workpiece surface with equal sensitivity. Fourier analysis of the signal caused by movement of the dynamic probe directly by the workpiece and also by movement of the yoke enables the profile of the workpiece to be determined. In order to improve the frequency response of the transducer output over the range of harmonics considered, the angles between the dynamic probe and the fixed probes are unequal. The apparatus does not require a precision spindle type machine to rotate the workpiece and is therefore particularly suitable for in situ measurement of workpiece profiles.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1987Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Assignee: Rank Taylor Hobson LimitedInventor: Philip R. The supporting arm engages the wing as a holding element and is fixable in position with respect to the angular intermediate piece 14 in two swiveling positions offset by 180.degree.. The end of the supporting arm 15 facing the angular intermediate piece 14 exhibits a fork shape having two parallel fork legs 38 adapted to pass laterally along a bearing eye 28 on the intermediate piece 14 wich encompasses the articulated axis 19--19.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1987Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Assignee: Siegenia-Frank KGInventor: Horst Loos

Patent number: 4903435Abstract: A device for motorized opening and closing of pivotable body panels of motor vehicles, especially the rear trunk lid or rear hatch and/or the hood of automobiles, has a motor-actuated lever system engaging in an articulated manner, on the one hand, with the body panel, and on the other hand, with the body. The body end of the lever system is articulated at a slide block guided slidingly in a guide track. The slide block is operatively connected to a driver that is secured to a control cable. The ends of the control cable can be wound onto or off a common cable pulley actuated by an electric motor.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1988Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Werner Bittmann, Gerhard Getrost

Patent number: 4903436Abstract: A guide arrangement for a sliding window of a vehicle includes a generally "U" shaped guide rail secured in a frame of the window opening and a runner slidable in said guide rail and which straddles and is fixed to the an edge of the window. The runner has a thin web disposed between the outer surface of the window and an outer leg of the guide rail in which the runner slides, so that the outside surface of the window is almost flush with the outer surface of the vehicle. A weatherstrip like seal mounted on the frame of the window opening engages the window.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1988Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Assignee: Automobiles Peugeot and Automobiles CitroenInventor: Firmin Rouillard

Patent number: 4903437Abstract: Slicing machine having a handle to be driven manually to generate command pulses. By revolving the handle, a feedtable is moved at the operator's command, enabling the positioning of a semiconductor material at the right position to start slicing. The thickness of the first wafer cut off from the material as well as other wafers, has a predetermined thickness, so that no wafer is wasted.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1988Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Assignee: Mitsubishi Kinzoku Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yutaka Kubotera, Kazunari Akiyama

Patent number: 4903439Abstract: A method of grinding rough-shaped spherical objects to a finished spherical form comprising the steps of freely supporting the rough-shaped spherical object on one end of a vertically oriented tube. This one end is open and has an inside diameter such that a segment portion of the object lies within the tube. Next, an abrasive is applied to the surface of the object, and the object is ground by vibrating the tube axially at a frequency in the range of approximatelly 20-25 KHz, whereby the surface of the object is ground to a truer spherical shape.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1985Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Assignee: SKF Industrial and Trading Development Centre, B.V.Inventor: Alfred Hoffmann

Patent number: 4903440Abstract: An abrasive product comprising abrasive grains bonded together or bonded to at least one major surface of a backing sheet, by a binder formed from a precursor comprising an aminoplast resin having on average at least 1.1 pendant .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carbonyl groups per molecule. The binder is formed by curing the precursor at the .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated site of the carbonyl group, by radiation energy or by heat, in the presence of an appropriate initiator system. The aminoplast resin can also contain pendant amino or hydroxy functional groups, which allow polymerization with condensation curable resins, such as phenolic, melamine, urea, urethane, and furfural resins. Polymerization at the unsaturated site of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carbonyl group can be effected either by radiation energy or by heat, and curing at the sites of the amino or hydroxy functional group can be subsequently effected by heat.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1988Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Alan R.
