Abstract: A rocket motor casing comprises a tube made of helically wound and cured phite/epoxy resin. A plurality of circumferentially spaced axially extending slits are cut into the graphite/epoxy structure which is subsequently covered by an aramid fiber/rubberized resin system which is hoop wrapped around the outer surface of the graphite/epoxy structure. During gun launching, the motor casing is capable of withstanding inwardly directed circumferential forces which tend to reduce the size of the slits and buckle and bend the aramid fiber/rubberized resin system. This system is capable of withstanding such deformation without failure. After launch the rocket motor is fired which requires the casing to act as a pressure vessel to withstand the outwardly directed forces from the rocket motor. These forces are withstood by the strength of the aramid fiber/rubberized resin system. Sufficient axial strength is provided by the cured and helical wound graphite/epoxy structure.

Abstract: Apparatus for stabilizing the flight of a rocket wherein the body of the ket is provided with a plurality of petals arranged around the periphery of the aft end of the rocket with the leading end of each petal being pivotally attached to the rocket body such that the trailing end of each petal is free to move outward away from the rocket body. A ring slidably mounted on the rocket is linked to each of the petals in such a manner that as the ring moves in an aft direction on the rocket body the trailing ends of all of the petals simultaneously move outward equal distances from the rocket body.

Abstract: Optical power is supplied to a remote location and switched between conveon circuits for converting the optical power to electrical power to remotely power a system or device. Laser light is guided by a fiber optic to illuminate photovoltaic cells to produce the electrical power. The electrical current from the cells is made to alternate by switching the light between the cells and using a transformer to step up the voltage. This allows power to be supplied to a remote area without disrupting the existing electromagnetic fields in the area and where space and voltage requirements are limited such that the use of many photovoltaic cells is prohibitive.

Abstract: Zeolites free from heavy metal cations are ion-exchanged with alkaline earth metal cations. The exchanged zeolites provide corrosion resistance to paints for metals, especially ferrous metals, without environmental hazard caused by use of heavy-metal anti-corrosion materials such as lead, chromium, zinc, etc.
Abstract: An electrolytic process for making uranium from uranium oxide using Cl.sub.2 anode product from an electrolytic cell to react with UO.sub.2 to form uranium chlorides. The chlorides are used in low concentrations in a melt comprising fluorides and chlorides of potassium, sodium and barium in the electrolytic cell. The electrolysis produces Cl.sub.2 at the anode that reacts with UO.sub.2 in the feed reactor to form soluble UCl.sub.4, available for a continuous process in the electrolytic cell, rather than having insoluble UO.sub.2 fouling the cell.

Abstract: An improved capillary action wicking structure and method with a method for its making and with application of the wicking structure to a high temperature electrical battery cell of the sodium/sulfur type.
