  • Patent number: RE33469
Abstract: A monolithic microwave voltage-controlled oscillator including one or more FETS integrated with a wide-ratio varactor. The varactor includes interdigitated anode and cathode patterns laid out on a single thin epitaxial layer. The punch through voltage of the epitaxial layer, and hence the resistivity-thickness product of the epitaxial layer, must be low. Since the substrate is semi-insulating, punch through to the substrate does not become uncontrollable, but simply permits modulation of the capacitance over a very wide range. The FETS are formed in the same epitaxial layer with the varactor, and complicated doping profiles are not required.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for acoustic wave generation and transmission into a subsurface earth formation, particularly adapted for use in borehole shear wave logging. A logging sonde adapted to be suspended in a borehole traversing a formation houses a source of acoustic waves. The source simultaneously generates a plurality of acoustic waves propagating generally radially outward from locations within the sonde housing adjacent the vertical central axis thereof and will interfere to produce multipole acoustic waves in the formation. Detector means within the housing spaced longitudinally from the source detect acoustic energy in the formation resulting from the generated waves. In a preferred embodiment, the source includes a cross-shaped rod assembly comprised of two rods perpendicular to each other and joined at their mid-points through which the central axis passes.

  • Patent number: 4974276
Abstract: A hold-down device for a mechanical dock leveler which is spring loaded so that when the hold-down device is released the deck will rise and the lip will extend. When the deck is walked down, the hold-down device maintains the deck in contact with the truck bed. This is accomplished by means of the interaction and geometry between a brake actuating arm and a brake release arm and the associated pins. As the dock leveler is lowered, the perpendicular distance from an anchor pin to the center line of a slot in the brake actuating arm increases. This causes the brake actuating arm to move upward increasing tension on the brake band. The brake release arm moves and increases the braking force. As the dock leveler is raised the braking force is reduced. The leveler includes a two-stage safety leg with a guide bar attached to the safety leg stop. The guide bar limits free travel of the safety leg.

  • Patent number: 4974284
Abstract: A wheel assembly and a picnic table with the wheel assembly attached thereto includes a bracket which has an arm portion and a mounting flange portion. The mounting flange portion is inclined at an angle of about 65.degree. with respect to the longitudinal extent of the upper edge of the arm portion. The flange portion is attached to inner face of the leg of the article of furniture such that the wheel which is located at the distal end of the arm portion is in close proximity to the underlying support surface. When attached to the leg of the article of furniture, the wheel is aligned with a side edge of the leg so that it does not form an obstruction which would be encountered by the legs of a person seated on the furniture in use.

  • Patent number: 4974285
Abstract: A device for assisting in the opening and closing of a pivotally mounted member comprising an elongated housing having a closed end and an open end and an inner annular cylindrical space. An annular cylindrical slide having an inner and an outer end is slidably mounted in the space for longitudinal movement into and out of the housing and a spring centrally mounted between the housing and the slide retains the slide in the housing in a retracted position. Braking devices are provided for retarding movement of the slide in either direction that include nozzle-shaped orifices communicating the inner space with the outside of the housing so that air has to flow into and out of said orifice as the slide moves relative to the housing. Locking devices hold the slide in an extended position, the locking devices being releaseable by pulling the slide out of the housing a short distance, and journal devices are at the outer end of the slide for connecting the slide to a pivotally mounted member.

  • Patent number: 4974286
Abstract: A universal handle for household and other hand-held implements, the handle being adapted to ergonomically render the implement to which it is applied useable by individuals who have diffculty in firmly grasping a conventional handle. The universal handle, which is fabricated of elastomeric material having good thermal insulation and cushioning properties, includes an internal cavity to socket the core shank of the implement. The handle has an elliptical cross section, the opposing sides of the handle adjacent its upper end each having a concave depression, in each of which an array of spaced, flexible fins is anchored to define a depressible grip site. When the fingers of a user's hand are clenched about the handle, the internal region of the resultant fist conforms to the form of the handle to provide a good grip thereon, the thumb and forefinger pressing into the grip sites to enhance the user's grip on the handle.

  • Patent number: 4974287
Abstract: A connecting assembly for connecting a handle member to a utensil. The utensil has an outer face to which is secured a support member of polygonal cross section and adapted to have the handle member attached thereto. The handle member includes a frontal cavity with a cross section generally conforming to that of the support member. The cavity is generally larger in cross section than the cross section of the support member. A spring member is provided and includes two integrally connected surface portions arranged at an angle to each other and is oriented between a pair of surfaces on the support member and a pair of interior wall surfaces in the cavity. The spring member includes structure for creating a spring force biassing the handle member in a direction transverse to the support member so that at least two wall surfaces on the support member will be urged into a direct form-fitting engagement with two other wall surfaces in the cavity.

  • Patent number: 4974288
Abstract: A disposable plastic handle and shield in the form of a first embodiment including a unitary injection molded hollow handle with a threaded upper end portion for engagement with a threaded receptacle on the luminaire of a hospital operating room. An integral, generally circular shield is connected to the handle between the threaded upper end portion and a lightly knurled portion of the handle. The shield includes a pair of spaced apart grooves on its underside, one on each side of the handle serving as live hinges and defining a pair of segments capable of being folded down against the knurled handle or upward against the threaded end of the handle to facilitate packaging. A second embodiment has a shield similar to the first embodiment but which is separate from, rather than integral with, the plastic handle.

  • Patent number: 4974289
Abstract: A hinge is made of two elements articulated to one another. One element constitutes at least one fork, supporting the hinge pin, and the other element constitutes at least one hub fitted on the hinge pin supported by the fork. Each bearing of the fork and each hub is connected by a tenon to a leaf of the hinge. The hubs and bearings of the two elements are accommodated in a housing of elastic material such as a metal or other appropriate material, such as a plastic or the like. The housing is rotationally connected with the bearings of each fork, with a longitudinal slot being provided in the housing, arranged parallel to the hinge pin. The slot is designed to allow tenons of both elements of the hinge to pass. The width of the slot is determined, at least by correspondence of the tenon of each hub, as a function of the maximum desired opening angle.

  • Patent number: 4974290
Abstract: A mechanical loin knife for removing a pork loin from the belly, ribs and fatback portion of a pork carcass is disclosed. A sustantially U-shaped knife blade 28 is supported within an elongated track 26 and adapted to pull or separate the pork loin therefrom. A pair of handles 25,27 are disposed one on each end and in a 90.degree. relationship with respect to elongated blade track 26. Blade 28 undergoes oscillating movement in response to an oscillating bar 49 connected thereto. Oscillating bar 49 is actuated by an oscillator cam 53 driven by a reduction gear output 48 leading from an overhead suspended electric motor 11. An overhead, house pressure, 180.degree. F. water supply 32 is connected through conduit 29 to blade track 26 and distributes sanitizing water via a manifold 68 housed therein to the base of blade 28. The 180.degree. F. water supply serves to maintain blade 28 clean and at an elevated temperature during use thereof.
