  • Patent number: 5199294
Abstract: This invention discloses a hand tool for bending a flange along an edge of a metal sheet. The tool can bend flanges of selected widths up to a maximum width and does not require that the metal sheet be marked or scored. A bending slot is formed by spaced apart forming plates having parallel bending edges at the boundary of the bending slot and a spacer between the plates. The spacer includes abutment edges spaced apart from bending edges. The abutment edges contact an edge of a metal sheet in the bending slot positioning the bending edges adjacent to the metal sheet and parallel to the edge of the metal sheet. Width-gaging openings through a forming plate communicate with the bending slot at locations spaced apart along the direction of the bending edges. Each width-gaging opening has a boundary with identifiable locations at selected distances from the bending edges.

  • Patent number: 5199296
Abstract: A method and test chamber for leak testing a container with a substantially flexible wall portion wherein the container is introduced into a test cavity so that the wall portion of the container is spaced from an inner adjacent wall portion of the test cavity with a gap being defined between the wall portion of the cavity and the flexible wall portion of the container. A pressure difference is installed as an initial value between the interior of the container and at least the gap by applying a pressure at least to the gap which is smaller than a pressure inside the container. The flexible wall portion is supported form its exterior side within the test cavity so as to prevent the flexible wall portion from bending outwardly into contact with the wall portion of the test cavity as a result of the pressure difference. The time course of a pressure prevailing within the gap is measured as a leak indicative signal.

  • Patent number: 5199298
Abstract: A shear stress sensor is fabricated using wafer bonding technology. The shear stress sensor is a floating element shear stress sensor designed to measure shear stresses of about 1 kPa-100 kPa over a wide range of operating conditions (temperature, humidity), as well as for a large variety of fluids. The sensor employs a silicon plate suspended about 1.4 microns above the surface of a silicon substrate by piezoresistive arms. The arms are directed parallel to the flow of interest and are loaded in tensile or compressive stress. The piezoresistive arms convert the strain to an electrical output which can be configured in a half bridge circuit with appropriate wiring. Fabrication of the sensor includes bonding a substrate silicon wafer and a device wafer which has an epitaxial silicon layer grown on top of a p+ dopant layer. The device wafer is etched back using the p+ layer as an etch stop. After selective removable of the p+ layer, ohmic contacts are formed through implantation and metalization techniques.

  • Patent number: 5199299
Abstract: An ultrasonic unipolar pulse/echo instrument uses active switches and a timing and drive circuitry to control electrical energy to a transducer, the discharging of the transducer, and the opening of an electrical pathway to the receiving circuitry for the returning echoes. The active switches utilize MOSFET devices along with decoupling circuitry to insure the preservation of the unipolar nature of the pulses, insure fast transition times, and maintain broad band width and time resolution. A housing contains the various circuitry and switches and allows connection to a power supply and a movable ultrasonic transducer. The circuitry maintains low impedance input to the transducer during transmitting cycles, and high impedance between the transducer and the receiving circuit during receive cycles to maintain the unipolar pulse shape. A unipolar pulse is valuable for nondestructive evaluation, a prime use for the present instrument.

  • Patent number: 5199301
Abstract: The axial force on the valve stem of a large valve can be related to the output of a strain sensor mounted on the yoke of the valve, but accuracy can be achieved only if the strain sensor is first calibrated by applying a known axial force to the valve stem. This can be done conveniently by using the invention, which includes two loading beams juxtaposed on opposite sides fo the valve stem, elongated in a direction perpendicular to the valve stem, and including a split nut or a collet for gripping the valve stem. Legs extend from the ends of the loading beam assembly parallel to the valve stem, and one or both of these legs includes a hydraulic ram for applying force to one or both ends of the loading beam assembly. This applied force can be measured independently of the yoke-mounted strain sensor.

  • Patent number: 5199304
Abstract: A technique for in a thermo-dynamic material testing system for optically measuring changes in specimen size that occur during material testing. Specifically, a pair of jaws, one movable and one fixed, engage opposite ends of the test specimen and are controllably moved with respect to each other in order to impart a desired tensile or compressive force to the specimen. A fixed light source emits a planar light beam, typically collimated laser radiation, that is directed at the specimen by two mirrors mounted to the jaws and on one side of the specimen. One of these mirrors is secured to and moves with the moving jaw and directs the light beam toward the specimen along a transverse path; the other mirror is mounted to the fixed jaw. A fixed light receiver receives the light beam after it has passed over the specimen and has been reflected by a similar pair of mirrors mounted to the jaws but on the other side of the specimen.

  • Patent number: 5199305
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for determining the strain developed in a coated surface. A beam with a coating on a surface thereof is mounted as a cantilever and a force is applied to the free end of the beam to cause deflection of the beam until the coating on the beam fails. The strain in the beam, and hence in the coating at the point of failure, is determined based on the dimensions of the beam, the point along the beam where failure of the coating occurs and the amount of deflection of the beam, and this determination is made independently of the temperature of the beam and the material from which the beam is made. The determination is made based on the equation E=1.5.sub.x /1.sup.3, where E is strain, h is the beam thickness, d is the beam deflection, x is the distance from the free end of the beam to the point where failure of the coating occurred, and l is the length of the beam.

Abstract: A reversing ratchet wrench especially suited for mass production and having few easily machinable parts. The pawl and driver are provided with overlapping covers which retain the pawl and protect the engaging teeth. The driver cover is flush with the wrench head for added convenience, yet makes no contact because the driver is supported on a driver skirt. Hence, the wrench is highly impact resistant. A unique retaining clip for retaining the driver allows convenient replacement of the pawl cap/reversing lever without removal of the pawl. Likewise, the wrench can be completely disassembled without special tools, thereby facilitating point-of-sale repair.

  • Patent number: 5199331
Abstract: A drain plug remover for vehicle engine oil pans includes a drain plug holding socket, a shield member and a handle. The socket, made of a resilient material, is formed having an open end which is slightly smaller than the head of the drain plug and includes longitudinal slits in its side wall, wherein, when the socket is pressed upon the drain plug, the socket expands to grasp the plug. An alternative means of holding the drain plug is by use of a magnet located within the socket. A shield member extends outwardly from the base of the socket, preferably in the form of a plate having an outer lip which curves towards the open end of the socket, thereby forming a concave, saucer-like receptacle to initially catch and subsequently deflect the flow of dirty oil away from the hand of the user. Extending from the shield member, opposing the socket, is a handle which the user grasps during removal and replacement of the drain plug. The handle includes longitudinal ridges to aid grasping and rotation of the tool.
