  • Patent number: 5207100
Abstract: A method and device for measuring higher mode vibrational energy is provi. The device includes a plurality of sensors placed with uniform spacing around the circumference of a structure and a processing unit. The sensor placement may be either on the inside or the outside of a structure depending on the structure and on the experiment. In operation, signals from individual sensors, preamplified if required, are fed to processing equipment. The processing equipment performs a double Fast Fourier Transform. The first transform is done on temporal data thereby providing an output representing a frequency spectrum. The second transform is performed on simultaneous data readings from all sensor locations thereby providing an output representing a spectrum of mode numbers. The combining of these outputs provides a three-dimensional plot of amplitude versus frequency and mode number.

  • Patent number: 5207102
Abstract: A semiconductor pressure sensor is manufactured by integrally encapsulating a semiconductor pressure, sensor chip, a pedestal, leads, wires and a die pad in an outer package except for the surface of a diaphragm of the semiconductor pressure sensor chip and the reverse side of the die pad. The ratio of the thickness of the pedestal to the thickness of the semiconductor pressure sensor chip is 7.5 or less, while the ratio of the diameter of an opening formed in the outer package at the surface of the diaphragm and the diameter of the diaphragm is 1 or more. The thermal stress generated in the semiconductor pressure sensor chip can freely be reduced to a desired value, and a semiconductor pressure sensor exhibiting a desired accuracy can therefore be obtained. Furthermore, since the semiconductor pressure sensor can be manufactured by an ordinary IC manufacturing process, a semiconductor pressure sensor with reduced cost and having high quality can be produced.

  • Patent number: 5207103
Abstract: A capacitive pressure sensor suitable for making highly sensitive, low pressure measurements is disclosed. The sensor may be mounted into a 0.5 mm OD catheter suitable for multipoint pressure measurements from within the coronary artery of the heart. The sensor employs a transducer which consists of a rectangular bulk silicon microdiaphragm several hundred microns on a side by two microns thick, surrounded by a supporting bulk silicon rim about 12 microns thick. Both the diaphragm and the rim are defined by a double diffusion etch-stop technique. The transducer fabrication process features a batch wafer-to-glass electrostatic seal followed by a silicon etch, which eliminates handling of individual small diaphragm structures until die separation and final packaging. An addressable read-out interface circuit may be used with the sensor to provide a high-level output signal, and allows the sensor to be compatible for use on a multisite catheter having only two electrical leads.

  • Patent number: 5207104
Abstract: A formation test tool is set forth in the present disclosure and has a snorkel on one side and upper and lower diametrically opposite back-up pistons on the opposite side. The back-up pistons are constructed with a back-up plate on the end of the back-up piston encircling and centered around a formation punch. The formation punch has a small diameter and specified length so that, during operation, the punch contacts the sidewall of the well borehole, and pressure is increased thereafter to force the punch into the formation until fracture failure occurs evidenced by a change in hydraulic pressure and a lurching movement of the back-up piston as the punch penetrates the formation. By knowing the diameter of the punch and by observing the hydraulic pressure necessary to obtain failure of the formation at the point of contact with the punch, data can be obtained which is indicative of the compressive strength of the formation.

  • Patent number: 5207112
Abstract: Cast iron gears, such as those used as cam gears on engines and as used for fuel injection gear pumps, which have a hub and a rim that are thick in comparison to the relatively thin web used to interconnect the hub with the rim and a process by which such iron gears can be cast, especially in a vertical orientation. To eliminate porosity problems, single flow channel of substantial thickness is incorporated into the mold cavity which forms a flow rib that runs radially between the hub and rim of the gear being formed. To compensate for both the added weight of the rib that is produced on the web of the resultant gear, as well as to counterbalance the effect caused by the presence of a single rib, at least one opening is formed in the web at each side of the rib.

  • Patent number: 5207114
Abstract: A pretensioned cable transmits power along a first support member (link) from a rotary actuator to a rotating output joint, typically an output pulley fixed to a second link arm but rotatable in a coupling between the first and second links. A reducer, typically two sets of coupled idler pulleys of different diameter, is mounted at a point removed from the actuator, and preferably as close as possible to the output joint. An axially split spool mounted on the actuator output wraps the outgoing and returning cable sections on different halves of the spool in opposite directions to provide pretensioning of the cable in the entire cable circuit at one point. To form a differential, a pretensioned cable carried on paired pulleys having smooth outer surfaces parallel to the axis of rotation couples the pulleys. The pulleys have axes of rotation that can intersect and their cable carrying surfaces are closely spaced, preferably by less than half the width of the cable.

  • Patent number: 5207119
Abstract: A pedal mechanism for a human propulsion vehicle such as a bicycle wherein the length of each of the pedal arm is increased during the power stroke and decreased during the return stroke of the rotation cycle. It comprises a pair of sun gears rigidly attached to the frame of the vehicle, each meshed to an adjacent planetary gear of identical diameter. A lever, radially projecting from each of the planetary gears, generate the alternative movement of the corresponding pedal arm. The levers also change the angular orientation of the pedal arms by moving them toward the power stroke zone, forcing the pedals arm to stay as long as possible in power stroke, thus giving the pedal mechanism no dead point. This pedal mechanism is very suitable for bicycle, especially mountain bicycles and racing bicycles where high power and efficiency are crucial.

  • Patent number: 5207135
Abstract: A multispindle lathe is disclosed which has an indexable drum including a plurality of main spindles. A secondary spindle opposes the main spindles so that it is coaxial with one of the main spindles at an indexed position. The secondary spindle is rotatable on a fixed axis and can be moved axially towards the main spindle. The rotation of the secondary spindle can be synchronized with the rotation of the main spindle so that both spindles can hold a workpiece. A cut off tool moves transversely to the spindles to cut the workpiece from bar stock which has been fed into the main spindle. After cut off, the secondary spindle moves away from the main spindle and a secondary tool moves transversely to the secondary spindle to machine the end of the workpiece which has just been cut off. Movement of the secondary tool and secondary spindle can be coordinated to form curves and tapered threads.

  • Patent number: 5207136
Abstract: A machining unit, in particular in a numerically controlled lathe, has a rotary head equipped with four pivoting tools for machining parts which pass axially through this head without rotating. Each tool is mounted on a respective pivoting support (6a-6d) provided with a helicoidal guiding surface (26a-26d) the axis of which coincides with the pivoting axis (7a-7d) of the support. The four tools are controlled by means of two concentric annular sockets (30, 42) controlled in translation. The inner socket (30) has two outer surfaces which rest against the guiding surfaces (26a, 26b) of two of the supports. The guiding surfaces are helixes of opposite pitch, and therefore one of the corresponding tools moves toward the part as the second tool moves away from it. The outer socket (42) controls the other two tools in the same manner.

  • Patent number: 5207142
Abstract: A diaphragm for a brake booster having an annular inner bead with first and second radial surfaces separated by an apex. The second radial surface has a plurality of indentations that extend from the apex. In response to a positive pressure differential created by vacuum in a first chamber and air in a second chamber, an output force is developed to effect a brake application corresponding to an input force. This positive pressure differential act on the annular bead to urge said first radial face into engagement with a wall to prevent communication between the first and second chambers during a brake application. In the absence of the presence of vacuum in the first chamber, the input force acts on the wall to develop an operational pressure in the first chamber to develop a negative pressure differential between the first and second chambers.
