  • Patent number: 5284069
Abstract: An improved punch retainer is disclosed in which a backing plate extends over a relatively large surface area to dissipate force from a punch. A punch retainer body and the tacking plate are permanently connected to each other and include passages which are finally ground after the two have been permanently connected. With this arrangement, it is ensured that passages within the backing plate and retainer body are all properly aligned during formation of the punch retainer. Since the backing plate dissipates force over a relatively large surface area, the punch retainer may be used in heavier applications than prior art punch retainers. A spring passage may be closed off by a seal received in the backing plate, allowing the use of standard springs. In a method according to the present invention, a dowel passage in the backing plate is finally ground such that it is centered on the center line of the punch within the retainer.

  • Patent number: 5284072
Abstract: The cleat removal/install tool has a handle with a first end and a second end. A ratchet is positioned within said handle member proximate said first end. A cleat receiving tool is positioned within said ratchet member or is directly built as part of the ratchet member The cleat tool has a concave surface which functions to mate with the upper surface of the cleat. The concave surface should not be spaced from the surface of the ratchet. That is, the design must be such as to prevent twisting of the concave surface away from the cleat. The upper surface of the cleat removal tool is, in the preferred embodiment, one inch or less from the concave surface of the cleat removal tool. The low thickness of the tool, preferably on the order of about on three quarters of an inch, permits the user to apply pressure directly above and very close to the upper surface of the cleat.

  • Patent number: 5284082
Abstract: An ammunition bunker rests against a military tank turret. The bunker's outward-facing walls are scored. The bunker wall facing the crew compartment is unscored. The ammunition stowed in the interior of the bunker points away from the crew compartment. The bunker is a separate and totally enclosed housing. The housing rests in a matching niche in the surface of the turret. One wall of the housing faces the crew compartment at a prescribed distance away from its wall. The roof of the housing consists of a number of separate plates resting in the interstices of a stationary grating. When the stowed ammunition explodes and the explosion increases the pressure inside the housing to a prescribed level, the pressure will break the scored walls apart at the scores, mold the wall of the housing that faces the crew compartment against the crew-compartment wall, and lift the plates out of the interstices in the grating.

The depository includes a casing that is mounted within an opening in the wall and a receptacle pivotally mounted about a horizontal axis within the casing. The receptacle includes a door, two vertical sides, and a floor. One end of a movable wall is pivotably mounted to the outboard end of the receptacle floor. When the receptacle is rotated about the horizontal axis to open the door the unattached end of the movable wall pivots towards the receptacle floor. The receptacle sides are separated from the edges of the movable wall by a clearance that is sufficiently small enough to impede the flow of air about the edges of the movable wall as the movable wall pivots. The air underneath the movable wall escapes through a gap between the unattached end of the movable wall and the door at a rate which cushions the impact of the unattached end against the receptacle floor.
