  • Patent number: 5293910
Abstract: The invention provides an improved pneumatically operated circuit for automatically shutting off the flow of high pressure air being introduced into an object to be inflated, such as a tire, when the pressure in the object reaches a preselected maximum pressure significantly below that of the high pressure supply. The air at high pressure is introduced into the object and into a control duct also connected to the object, until pressure in the control duct overcomes the bias of a control valve, at which time the control valve closes to interrupt the flow of high pressure air and allow pressure in the object and the control duct to equilibrate; if the equilibrated pressure does not continue to overcome the bias of a control valve, the control valve again opens to admit additional high pressure air to the object and control duct until the bias of the control valve again is overcome and the control valve closed as previously, repeating the closing cycle.

  • Patent number: 5293919
Abstract: A self-regulating tire pressure system and method employs a bistable valve (10) that allows air from a high pressure reservoir (6) to replenish the pressure within a tire (4) when it has fallen below an actuating pressure, and discontinues its operation only after the tire pressure has increased to a closing pressure that is greater than the actuating pressure. The system is capable of sensing the valve's (10) frequency of operation as an indication of a slow tire leak when the frequency exceeds a predetermined threshold, of sensing the number of valve (10) operations and the duration of each operation as an indication of a flat tire condition when the number of operations for a predetermined duration exceeds a second threshold, and of sensing the duration of the valve's (10) operation as an indication of a low reservoir (6) pressure condition when that duration exceeds a third threshold.

  • Patent number: 5293923
Abstract: A method is provided for forming a metallurgical bond between an aluminum-base insert and an aluminum-base casting material during a casting process, wherein the method entails wetting the oxide surface of the insert, coating the surface with a metallurgically compatible material, and raising the temperature of the insert to reduce the temperature gradient between the insert and the casting material. The insert is dipped into a molten zinc-base alloy which includes about 2 to about 10 weight percent aluminum. The zinc-base alloy coats the insert and remains on the surface of the insert until a molten casting material is introduced. As a result, the surface of the coated insert is nearly oxide-free. The aluminum content in the zinc-base alloy is preferably about 4 to about 6 weight percent of the zinc-base alloy. The zinc-base alloy also preferably contains between about 0.25 and 0.35 weight percent magnesium for the purpose of weakening the oxide film layer on the insert.

  • Patent number: 5293925
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for withdrawing a strand in a horizontal continuous casting installation, the strand is withdrawn from a mold by a predetermined stroke and then retracted by a smaller stroke corresponding to shrinkage of the strand. This cycle of withdrawal and retraction is repeated intermittently. A strand withdrawing and retracting characteristic of a cycle is set in a control unit, and pinch rolls for withdrawing and retracting the strand are controlled based on the set characteristic. Actual withdrawing and retracting strokes of the strand are detected by a detecting device and the detected signal is compared with the set characteristic to produce an instruction signal which is fed back to the pinch rolls, so that the positional accuracy of the strand and the quality of the strand are improved.

  • Patent number: 5293930
Abstract: A heat exchanger for cooling an electronic device combines material, geometry and fin effectiveness to maximize heat transfer rate for a its heat exchanging surface area. The heat exchanger comprises a thermally conductive spacer adapted to be mounted onto a surface of the electronic device. A thermally conductive disk-shaped fin is centered on the spacer and has opposed surface-to-air heat exchanging surfaces extending radially from the spacer generally parallel to the surface of the device. The spacer can be disk-shaped and has a diameter which is less than the diameter of the thermally conductive disk. As such, the heat exchanger is omnidirectional in that it effectively removes heat from the electronic device for an incoming air flow originating from any direction and flowing generally parallel to the surface of the device.

Abstract: Apparatus for taking a multiple of samples of groundwater or pressure measurements from a well simultaneously. The apparatus comprises a series of chambers arranged in an axial array, each of which is dimensioned to fit into a perforated well casing and leave a small gap between the well casing and the exterior of the chamber. Seals at each end of the container define the limits to the axial portion of the well to be sampled. A submersible pump in each chamber pumps the groundwater that passes through the well casing perforations into the gap from the gap to the surface for analysis. The power lines and hoses for the chambers farther down the array pass through each chamber above them in the array. The seals are solid, water-proof, non-reactive, resilient disks supported to engage the inside surface of the well casing. Because of the modular design, the apparatus provides flexibility for use in a variety of well configurations.
