  • Patent number: 5297327
Abstract: A defective focusing coil, impregnated with and held in place with epoxy is removed from its inner lead liner and its outer brass housing by immersing the assembled parts in a bath of liquid nitrogen until the temperature of the assembly is reduced to the temperature of the liquid nitrogen, about -350.degree. F. The assembly is then removed from the bath and a series of sharp blows are then directed to the side of the brass housing to break the bond between the super cooled epoxy and the housing. Axial pressure is then applied to the coil, to remove the coil and liner. The coil is then cut longitudinally into two half cylinders, whereupon the coil is split from the liner, all without injury to either the liner or the housings.

  • Patent number: 5297331
Abstract: In a printhead according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, a polymer tape having orifices formed therein and containing conductive traces is provided with one or more windows exposing ends of the conductive traces. A separate substrate contains heating elements and electrodes. A conventional, commercially available automatic inner lead bonder is then used to automatically align the orifices to the heating elements. The automatic alignment of the orifices and heating elements also inherently aligns the electrodes on the substrate with the exposed ends of the traces. The wire bonder is then used to bond the traces to the associated substrate electrodes through the window.

  • Patent number: 5297345
Abstract: A slicing knife comprises a handle and a blade extending from one end of the handle where the blade is generally rectangular in shape and has opposed edges honed to a knife edge. Formed into the thickness dimension of the blade are a plurality of zones of reduced thickness which may be longitudinally-spaced apertures which are separated from one another by ribs having a generally rhombic cross-section. The blade tapers from a maximum thickness dimension in each direction in creating the knife edge and in approaching the zones of reduced thickness. The thickness of the ribs exceeds the blade thickness such that when it is pressed, for example, through a block of cheese, the cheese only contacts the blade along the line segments defined by the corners of the rhombic ribs.

  • Patent number: 5297364
Abstract: A polishing pad is provided, having its face shaped to produce controlled nonuniform removal of material from a workpiece. Non-uniformity is produced as a function of distance from the pad's rotational axis (the working radius). The pad face is configured with both raised, contact regions and voided, non-contact regions such that arcuate abrasive contact varies nonuniformly as a function of distance from the pad's rotational axis. Void density at any distance may be produced by several techniques such as varying void size as a function of working radius or varying the number of voids per unit area as a function of working radius. Either technique produces variation in voided area per total unit area for rings of pad surface concentric with the rotational axis having infintesimally small width.

  • Patent number: 5297365
Abstract: An industrially feasible method of grinding silicon nitride ceramics, is disclosed and provides a sufficiently smooth surface. Namely, the surface has a maximum height-roughness Rmax of 0.1 microns or less and a ten-point mean roughness Rz of 0.05 microns. Further, with this method, surface damage can be repaired while grinding. The vertical cutting feed rate of a grinding wheel into a workpiece should be within the range of 0.005-0.1 micron for each rotation of the working surface of the wheel and change linearly or stepwise. The cutting speed of the grinding wheel in a horizontal (rotational) direction should be within the range of 25 to 75 m/sec. With this arrangement, the contact pressure and grinding heat that is generated between the workpiece and the hard abrasive grains during grinding are combined. In other words, mechanical and thermal actions are combined.

Abstract: A removable storm drain cartridge to preserve the ground water quality to improve the environment for separating storm run-off water and removing oil and heavy debris from the storm run-off water, conveniently and inexpensively for use in a conventional storm drain, the cartridge including a heavy duty rectangular box container that is waterproof, an interior passage that is smaller in cross-sectional area that covers the top opening, forcing all storm water to flow through the interior passage first, the interior passage having a shortened length relative to the container length so that water flow will be out of the interior passage up the side walls of the exterior container out through openings in the top of the side walls. An oil trap is strategically located across the opening of the container to catch oil particles and remove them from the water flowing therethrough, while rocks, sand, and other debris will collect in the bottom of the container.

  • Patent number: 5297369
Abstract: A building structure comprising a base and a plurality of spaced support members extending from the base in offset relation. Each support member has an outer edge, side edges and an inner edge and is positioned such that the inner edges of offset support members overlap through a vertical plane in the structure. First and second panels are attached to the outer edges of the support members, the inner edge of each support member being spaced apart from the opposite panel. A plurality of rigid panel members extend between the side edges of any two adjacent support members attached to the same panel and across the inner edge of the intervening offset support member attached to the opposite panel to define a series of three non-communicating chambers between the first and second panels repeated along the length of the structure. The arrangement acts to lessen the transmission of sound through the structure.

Abstract: An elastomeric seal for connecting two relatively movable architectural structures, such as floor sections, is constructed to optimize resistance to failure of the elastomeric element, in either adhesion or cohesion modes. An elastomeric seal, and an underlying support plate are provided with gently undulating, somewhat sinusoidal surface configuration, with the elastomeric element being of downwardly convex configuration and of relatively maximum thickness in its center, and of downwardly concave configuration and relatively less thickness in regions spaced on either side of center. Widthwise stretching of the elastomeric element tends to be concentrated in the regions of downwardly concave configuration, being thus not only distributed but also located away from areas of maximum vertical stress.

  • Patent number: 5297373
Abstract: A drainable blade louver comprises a multiplicity of inclined blades extending horizontally between the jambs of a frame. Each blade has in cross-section a base portion sloping smoothly upwardly from a lowermost point at the front edge of the blade to an uppermost point proximate to the rear edge of the blade. The undersurface of the base portion is free of protuberances so that there are no drip points and water clinging to the undersurface of the base portion is transported along the undersurface by the air flowing through the louver. A generally C-shaped bottom trough portion adjacent the upper edge of the blade captures water blown along the undersurface of the blade and drains it to the jambs. A front drainage trough, an intermediate drainage trough, and a rear drainage trough on the top surface of each blade provide high capacity water-capturing ability. Water captured in each drainage trough is flows along each trough to respective front, intermediate and rear drainage channels in the jambs.

  • Patent number: 5297377
Abstract: An agricultural bagging machine is disclosed which includes a plurality of horizontally disposed and vertically spaced cables positioned at the rearward end of the tunnel of the machine. The cables are dragged through the silage being bagged as the bagging machine moves away from the closed end of the bag so that the proper amount of density is created in the material being bagged. Each of the cables defines a cable loop which extends rearwardly from the output end of the tunnel into the open end of the bag. The lengths of the cables may be adjusted to permit the density to be controlled. The number of cables may also be varied to control the density in various types of silage materials.
