Patent number: 5305504Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a scrim with fibers oriented in the bias direction comprising of at least two belts and at least one plate which forms a three dimensional mandrel over which the bias scrim is formed. The plate is shaped so that any cross-section taken perpendicularly to the direction of travel of the scrim, the perimeter of the scrim formed by fibers wrapped around the machine in the plane of the cross-section is constant. This constant is equal to twice the final width of the scrim from selvedge to selvedge. The scrim is formed by wrapping fibers around the front of the assembly while the belts move toward the rear end of the machine. The movement of the belts carry the fibers to the rear of the assembly as they are wrapped around the assembly. The belts travel at substantially the same speed in opposite directions. The ratio of the speed that the fibers are wrapped around the assembly and the speed of the belts determine the fiber angle of the bias scrim.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1993Date of Patent: April 26, 1994Assignee: Milliken Research CorporationInventor: John B. Patent number: 5305507Abstract: A piezoelectric actuator/sensor package and corresponding method for its fabrication, and a method of embedding a ceramic actuator/sensor in a laminated structural member, such as a graphite-epoxy laminate. A ceramic actuator/sensor, with lead wires first bonded to it, is encapsulated in a non-conductive fiber composite material, such as fiberglass cloth and epoxy, to form a package that is precured at a suitable temperature, typically room temperature. Encapsulation provides electrical insulation, good strain coupling, protection from mechanical damage, and reduction in thermal stresses, since the coefficient of thermal expansion of the encapsulating material is selected to be between those of the ceramic and the graphite-epoxy laminate. Graphite fibers may be added to the package to enhance voltage-strain performance. The package is embedded in the structural laminate and the composite structure is cured in a manner that minimizes thermally-induced stresses.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1990Date of Patent: April 26, 1994Assignee: TRW Inc.Inventors: George R. Patent number: 5305512Abstract: A method of producing a truck-like conversion van starts with a conventional, cargo van, and vertically cuts the conventional van only partially along a vertical section of the main frame of the vehicle, just rearwardly of the side doors of the van. Thereafter, a horizontal cut is made starting from the bottom of the vertical cut and progressing rearwardly all the way through the frame or existing floor of the van. Thus a rectangular-shaped slab or cutout of the conventional van is removed. The horizontal plane in which the horizontal cut is made is above the top of the rear tail lights, so that, not only are all of the mechanical parts of the original van retained, but also the same, original tail lights are also retained. After the slab has been cut away and removed, a truck-bed liner-insert of the invention is inserted into the cut-away, rear portion of the van, which rear portion is partially hollow, by which the liner-insert may be received therein.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1993Date of Patent: April 26, 1994Inventor: Jeffrey Ward

Patent number: 5305520Abstract: A ceramic fibre reinforced metal rotor with integral rotor blades is manufactured using a continuous strip of unidirectional ceramic fibres in a metal matrix. The continuous strip of ceramic fibres in a metal matrix is cut into a plurality of separate pieces of predetermined length. The separate pieces of ceramic fibres in the metal matrix are arranged alternately in a spiral, with separate pieces of unreinforced metal matrix in adjacent abutting relationship to form a ring which has a plurality of laminations. The ring of laminations of metal matrix composite pieces and unreinforced metal matrix pieces are arranged between an inner and an outer metal ring to form an assembly. The assembly is consolidated by hot isostatic pressing using radially applied pressure. Patent number: 5305553Abstract: A weatherstrip structure for an automotive vehicle includes a reversed U-shaped main body to define a space which is open toward an upright mounting flange provided at a vehicle body opening edge. A first grasping lip is provided in the space extending from one of side sections of the main body defining the space. A second grasping lip is further provided extending into the space from a lower end of the other of the side sections. The second lip is adapted to make a tilting movement relative to the other of the side sections so as to facilitate insertion of the mounting flange into the space. A stopper projection is provided between the second lip and the other of the side sections for limiting the tilting movement of the second lip toward the other of the side sections so as to prevent the second lip from excessively tilting toward the other of the side sections. A sponge rubber projection may be provided independently of or along with the stopper projection at an inward tip portion of the second lip.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1990Date of Patent: April 26, 1994Assignees: Nissan Motor Company, Limited, Kinugawa Rubber Industrial Co.
