  • Patent number: 5355556
Abstract: Hinges on the door have pairs of pins facing in opposite directions. One of each pair of pins is inserted in a socket of a hinge knuckle. The end of the pin bears against an interior surface of the knuckle. The pins can be connected by a post. A slot is provided in the knuckle for receiving the post. The door is reversed by removing the pin from the socket, inverting the door, and inserting the opposite pin in a knuckle on the opposite side of the opening. The enclosure or the door is provided with a flange or seal to engage the door when it is closed, thereby inhibiting movement of the door in the plane of the door. • Patent number: 5355567
Abstract: The invention is directed to a process for preparing a blended tow of thermoplastic and reinforcing fibers. The process of the invention includes the steps of forming a substantially planar spaced array of thermoplastic multifilament yarns and superimposing the spaced array of separate yarns onto a spread tow of reinforcing fibers. The resulting planar mixed yarn is then gathered into a tow having a nonuniform distribution of thermoplastic fibers throughout the tow. The tow is useful in forming fiber-reinforced composite articles by shaping the tow into a desired form and then heating the shaped tow to melt the thermoplastic fibers which, in turn, form a plastic matrix which is reinforced by the reinforcing fibers.

  • Patent number: 5355571
Abstract: In order to open the watch case (1) by extraction of the crystal (2) such case is secured in an enclosure (3) after its stem and crown have been removed. Next, a suction cup (4) is applied to the crystal, such suction cup being maneuverable from outside the enclosure by means of a handle (40). By means of a pump controlled by a lever (37) the enclosure is subjected to a predetermined overpressure, following which a pulling force (A) is exerted on the suction cup until extraction of the crystal. The overpressure being the same at both the exterior and interior of the case, no displacement of air is brought about and hence no damage to the watch mechanism when the crystal is separated from the case.

  • Patent number: 5355577
Abstract: Abstract: A method of rapidly assembling many discrete microelectronic or micro-mechanical devices 56 (FIG. 2 ) in a precise configuration (FIG. 8f). The devices are placed randomly on a template (FIG. 3 ) consisting of a pair of oppositely charged planar electrodes. The upper electrode contains a multiplicity of apertures. The template is vibrated and the devices are attracted to the apertures and trapped thereat. The shape of a given aperture determines the number, orientation, and type of device that it traps. The process is completed by mechanically and electrically connecting the devices. The present method for serf-assembly allows many sub-millimeter sized electronic components or other particles to be rapidly assembled into a predetermined configuration. The method relies on vibration and weak electrical or magnetic forces.

Abstract: The scissors are provided with replaceable thin insert blades. The blade insert carriers of the scissors are recessed to receive the blade inserts fixed in place by a screw. The edge-to-edge force at the cutting point is controlled by the bend and the twist of the blade insert carriers. The fixation of the blade inserts by the screw in the front half of the blade insert carriers and their twist in the back section, leaves the cutting edge of the blade inserts unsupported near the pivot point of the scissors. Torsion of the blade inserts allows for easier control of the edge-to-edge force near the pivot without a penalty of the high edge-to-edge compliance towards the tips. Use of replaceable blade inserts eliminates the need for resharpening of the cutting edge and allows for use of the special purpose blade inserts with the same basic scissors.

Abstract: An attachment is provided for converting a table top steamer into an apparatus for steam treatment of the body. The attachment comprises an approximately cylindrical conduit having open ends and a plurality of holes located between the first and second ends. The conduit divides the steam jet discharged from the steamer into three streams and diffuses and cools the steam in each of these streams, thereby allowing the face and both hands of the user may be simultaneously steam treated. The attachment is locked onto the steamer by a pair of flexible tabs extending from the sides of the conduit. The tabs have holes formed therein that secure them to retainers extending from the steamer by means of a snap fit.

Abstract: A device for transferring a paper web from the press section into the dry end of a paper making machine. The web contacts a rotatable press surface, e.g. on a press roll, and travels with the press surface through a press nip against a backing roll, and thereafter travels with the press surface to a web removal place. The web is transferred by a suction device across an adjustable gap to a porous transport belt which transports the web toward a first dryer group. The first dryer group has a number of drying cylinders and a web support belt that transfers the web from drying cylinder to drying cylinder. Either a suction device or another intermediate transfer roll transfers the web from the transport belt to the support belt for the dryer group.

  • Patent number: 5355594
Abstract: A method of maximizing net water loss from various sludges in the outdoor environment to stabilize or to reduce the volume and weight of sludges. Specifically, this method comprises drying a layer of wet sludge by surface evaporation, mixing a sufficient amount of additional wet sludge to the previously-dried sludge layer to form a sludge mixture having a water content at which surface evaporation is maximized, and drying the sludge mixture by surface evaporation or by periodical tilling or both. Additionally, the sludge surface is sealed by light compaction in the event of imminent precipitation to minimize rainwater retention and infiltration. In addition to stabilization, this method may be used as an effective pretreatment step towards other sludge treatment processes to drastically reduce the sludge treatment cost, based on the reduction of the sludge volume, sludge weight, and sludge water content.
