Patent number: 5355647Abstract: A masonry wall system is constructed of concrete blocks, with interconnected insulation inserts. To provide for increased structural reinforcement, a steel butterfly-shaped plate is locked on an elongated rod passing through periodic courses of stacked blocks. The plate is locked perpendicular onto the rod, to rest on the top of the uppermost block in the course to which the stress or locking is applied. A recess is formed in the top of the block to accommodate the plate, which is bowed upwardly. A nut or threaded insert is used to press the plate downwardly; and when the plate lies flat, the desired amount of pressure or stress is applied to the blocks. Additional courses may be applied on top of the one to which the plate supplies the stress, with additional locking rods and plates being threaded onto the ends of previous rods to accomplish this purpose in additional courses of blocks forming the wall system.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1992Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Inventors: Stanley D. Patent number: 5355685Abstract: The presence of an undesirable quantity of noncondensible gases in a refrigeration unit is inferred as a function of both the vapor pressure and temperature at a selected point in the refrigeration unit where the noncondensible gases tend to gather. Purging of these noncondensible gases, which contaminate the refrigerant, is responsive to a comparison in a programmable controller of the actual vapor pressure measured at the selected point, and the known pressure of uncontaminated refrigerant at the temperature existing at the selected point. On detecting a difference between these pressures that is greater than a desired value, the controller calculates a control output signal needed to purge a volume of contaminated vapor from the unit that is effective for reducing the difference between the measured pressure of contaminated refrigerant and the known pressure of uncontaminated refrigerant to a desired value.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1993Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Assignee: Phillips Petroleum CompanyInventors: Kenneth E. Patent number: 5355689Abstract: A heat pump type air conditioner for an automotive vehicle has a compressor whose outlet is connected to a condenser and a heat-radiating inner heat exchanger through a three-way valve. The heat-radiating inner heat exchanger is connected to an evaporator through an expansion valve. The evaporator is connected to an inlet of the compressor. During a cooling operation, the three-way valve is set to lead the refrigerant from the compressor to the condenser. During a heating operation, the three-way valve is set to lead the refrigerant from the compressor to the heat-radiating inner heat exchanger while bypassing the condenser. A control unit controls such that a cooling efficiency of the condenser is lowered for a predetermined time when the compressor is started. Therefore, the heating operation is securely implemented, and a start-up period in starting is shortened. Furthermore, the freezing of the condenser is avoided.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1993Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Assignee: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Junichiro Hara, Takayoshi Matsuoka

Patent number: 5355691Abstract: A controller for controlling the capacity of a centrifugal chiller compressor. The compressor is driven by an electric motor and has variable inlet guide vanes that control the flow of refrigerant to the compressor. The controller establishes a dimensionless plot of possible points of compressor operation relating the pressure coefficient and the capacity coefficient of the compressor. The current operating point of the centrifugal compressor is located on the plot and a dynamic surge boundary control curve is positioned proximate a region of actual surge. Control is exercised responsive to the variations of the region of actual surge and the surge boundary control curve for controlling compressor capacity by varying the opening of the inlet guide vanes and varying the speed of the compressor to move the operating point of the compressor proximate the surge boundary control curve.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1993Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Assignee: American Standard Inc.Inventors: Brian T.
