  • Patent number: 5371991
Abstract: A re-bar clamp assembly for use in forming concrete footings that require the reinforcing steel rods to be spaced upwardly at a predetermined height above the ground so that when the concrete is poured into the footings the reinforcing bars will be completely encapsulated by the concrete. One of the forms of the re-bar clamp assembly is formed of a pair of first and second C-shaped clamps that are attached to each other in a stacked vertical orientation but with the open mouth of each clamp oriented substantially 90 degrees away from each other. Thus when the re-bars are snapped into the clamp assembly they will be oriented at 90 degrees to each other. A second form of the re-bar clamp assembly has a horizontally oriented C-shaped clamp that forms a slot for detachably curved finger extending re-bar steel rod. A resilient spring finger on the C-shaped clamp extends inwardly above the stake slot area and fictionally holds the clamp at any predetermined height on the stake.

  • Patent number: 5371992
Abstract: At least one scored screw is driven into the squeak area with a specialized driving bit and an alignment and depth control fixture. The alignment and depth control fixture is used to direct the scored screw to the proper point into the floor so that the scored area is at or beneath the surface of the floor. The driving bit can stop driving the screw at the desired position. After the alignment and depth control fixture is removed, a gripping tool is used to apply force to the screw and break the screw at the prescored position. The barrel of the screw being left in the floor locks the floor or the step to the desired support. • Patent number: 5371999
Abstract: A continuously operating machine is provided for wrapping articles with a heat shrinkable plastic film automatically and sequentially. Articles are continuously, translated along a horizontal pathway. At a first station, articles are longitudinally circumferentially tubularly overwrapped and sealed. At a next succeeding station, the so overwrapped articles are cross sealed and separated (cut). At a last succeeding station, the resulting wrapped articles are subjected to thermal film shrinking. The cross sealing and separating brings a continuously rotating heated knife and an opposed cross bar into a predetermined registration with the interspatial region between succeeding articles. The registration time duration can be regulated and increased to values substantially in excess of the momentary contact time existing in normal rotation and tangential point contact.

  • Patent number: 5372001
Abstract: The mowing apparatus is made up of a long, narrow cutting assembly, a boat and two booms, one on each side of the boat, attaching the cutting assembly to the boat. There is a flotation tank at each end of the cutting assembly and the forward end of each tank is pivotally attached to the aft end of a boom. The forward ends of the booms are pivotally attached to the boat at about gunwale height and well toward the bow. All the pivotal connection axes are horizontal and perpendicular to the vertical plane through the centerline of the boat, allowing the cutting assembly to be raised and lowered between the surface of the water and the bottom of the body of water. The raising and lowering are done by allowing water into the tanks to cause the cutting assembly to sink and forcing the water out of the tanks with air to raise the cutting assembly. The cutting assembly is a sawtoothed blade operating between two sawtoothed plates. The end wise oscillations of the blade are powered by a pneumatic actuator.

  • Patent number: 5372005
Abstract: Thrust modules are provided at the distal ends of a low aerodynamic drag rotor. The rotor is affixed at a central hub to a shaft, and rotates about an axis defined by the shaft. In the preferred embodiment the thrust modules are ramjet engines, and the ramjet inlet captures and compresses an impinging inlet air stream. The compressed air stream thus provides oxygen for mixing with a fuel which is supplied to the ramjet thrust modules from a convenient fuel source such as natural gas. The fuel is oxidized in the thrust modules to produce combustion gases. The gases expand, and the exhaust flow creates thrust which is substantially tangential to the circumference defined by the distal end of the rotor. The gases expand to motivate the ramjet engine to rotate about the shaft at supersonic thrust module velocities, producing shaft energy.

  • Patent number: 5372007
Abstract: The generation of electricity via a steam turbine-driven generator is improved by mixing high-pressure fuel gas with the steam supplied to the turbine. The turbine discharge is separated into gas and steam condensate. The gas is burned to convert the condensate into the steam supplied to the turbine. Maximum benefits of such operation are attained by conducting the combustion of the separated gas with a porous fiber burner to suppress the formation of air pollutants.

  • Patent number: 5372008
Abstract: Past systems have attempted to provide a combustion system to reduce NOx pollution, however, such methods have failed to attain adequate reductions in NOx pollution. The present system or structure for for reducing NOx includes a pilot fuel system and a premixed supply system to reduce the NOx to a workable level. The pilot system uses a device for supplying combustible fuel to the fuel injection nozzle generally along a combustion axis during all or a portion of the operating conditions of the engine. Low NOx is maintained by using a device for supplying combustible fuel into each of a plurality of spaces formed between a plurality of swirler vanes. Low NOx is further maintained by having the cooling fluid used to cool the fuel injection nozzle mixed with the fuel and air from the spaces prior to entering the combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 5372009
Abstract: A cryogenic technique for recovering pure products from a mixture of at least three close-boiling components. A preferred process is provided for separating a hydrocarbon mixture containing an alkene (i.e. ethene or propene), corresponding alkane having the same number of carbon atoms and at least one heavier hydrocarbon component. The improved process comprises: feeding the hydrocarbon mixture to a first distillation tower having an upper reflux stage; recovering a first overhead vapor stream rich in alkene and alkane from the first distillation tower and passing the first overhead vapor stream to a middle distillation stage of a second multi-stage distillation tower; recovering a second overhead vapor stream rich in alkene from the second distillation tower; adiabatically compressing the alkene-rich vapor stream and passing the compressed vapor to a second distillation tower reboiler stage. This provides a heat pump for cooling and condensing the compressed vapor and heating a liquid reboiler stream.

  • Patent number: 5372010
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for compressing gas in a compressor station for a gas pipeline, especially in areas of permanent frost, wherein the gas is supplied in the gas pipeline to the compressor station at an entry pressure and the gas is returned to the pipeline for further transportation in the pipeline at a desired exit temperature and at an exit pressure which is higher than the entry pressure. The gas is initially compressed at least during individual time intervals to an excess pressure which is substantially higher than the desired exit pressure. The compressed gas is then cooled by heat exchange to a temperature above the desired exit temperature. Finally, the gas is further cooled to the desired exit temperature by expanding the gas from the excess pressure to the exit pressure.

  • Patent number: 5372016
Abstract: An improved ground source heat pump system wherein the subterranean piping installation comprises modular heat exchange units. Each modular heat exchange unit comprises a plurality of parallel secondary or branch conduits. The use of multiple parallel secondary conduits significantly increases the heat exchange capacity of the system. Because of the increased efficiency of such a system, less piping is required, which in turn reduces the cost of labor and materials to install such a system and the area of land mass required to contain it. Moreover, because the heat exchange units are modular, they can be prefabricated at a remote site and then conveniently transported to construction site and installed much more quickly than the extended lengths of conventional piping.
