  • Patent number: 5416976
Abstract: A gyro compass having a gyro case housing therein a gyro and supported with freedom of three axes, functions for outputting a signal corresponding to an inclined angle of the gyro spin axis relative to the horizontal plane, and a function for applying a torque around a vertical axis of the gyro case in proportion to an input signal. A controller is supplied with a signal corresponding to the inclined angle and a latitude value at which the gyro compass is located, and a constant relative to the input latitude value is determined by the controller after the gyro compass is energized. A signal, resulting from differentiating the signal corresponding to the inclined angle during a predetermined time, is added to the product of the signal corresponding to the inclined angle and the constant. This added signal functions as the input signal for the gyro, whereby a constant optimum north-seeking movement is carried out regardless of the change of the latitude value.

  • Patent number: 5416977
Abstract: A very small pitch sensor which accurately measures angular rotation about he pitch axis while being substantially insensitive to angular rotations about the roll or yaw axes. The pitch sensor comprises a spherical cavity that is fluid filled. The fluid fill further comprises one half conductive fluid and one half dielectric fluid. The fluids are selected to be immiscible and of different densities. The inside of the spherical cavity is segmented into three surface areas for connection to an electronic circuit. The electronic circuit measures voltage differentials between the segmented surface areas which vary with the conductive fluid surface in contact with the respective segmented areas. The conductive fluid surface contact area varies with the angular rotation of the cavity and about the pitch axis.

  • Patent number: 5416980
Abstract: The invention is related to a method and a device in the drying section of a paper machine for reducing the tendency of the paper to curl. The paper web is dried on drying cylinders, against whose heated faces the paper web is pressed by means of a drying wire. In the drying section, groups of drying cylinders are used, in which twin-wire draw and/or single-wire draw is/are applied. In the drying section, hot water steam is fed substantially onto the entire width of the paper web, by means of which steam tensions that have been formed or that tend to be formed in the fiber mesh in the paper web are relaxed by means of heat and moisture in the area of their formation or substantially immediately thereafter. Moreover, the transverse curling profile and/or moisture profile of the paper web can be controlled by the steam treatment.

  • Patent number: 5416983
Abstract: A clothes dryer is adapted to reduce residual static in clothing items. The sidewall of the drum carries conductive tumbling vanes and a conductive projection. The vanes engage clothing items at the periphery of the dram interior. The projection penetrates further into the drum to contact clothing items that tend to locate there when the dryer is very full. The projection curves in the direction of drum rotation to avoid trapping clothing against the drum side wall. The vanes and projection are coupled to the ground terminal of an electrical main to dissipate static charges gathered from the clothing. To enhance electrical coupling to the rotary drum, a copper ring is mounted around the drum and a copper contact plate is supported from the dryer housing and spring-biased to engage the copper ting. Residual static is further reduced with a grounded conductive plate located near the bottom of the dryer opening that accesses the drum.

  • Patent number: 5416984
Abstract: An apparatus for transferring heat from a web includes a chill roll having a cylindrical outer side surface. The web moves along a path which extends part way around the chill roll. A nozzle extends between opposite edge portions of the web and extends circumferentially around a portion of the cylindrical outer side surface of the chill roll. A central portion of the nozzle directs a flow of air against a central portion of the web upstream of a location where the web normally engages the chill roll to deflect the central portion of the web into engagement with the chill roll. Opposite side portions of the nozzle extend away from the central portion of the nozzle and extend downstream from the location where the central portion of the web is deflected toward the chill roll. This results in a smoothing action which extends across the web and downstream along the web from the central portion of the web.
