  • Patent number: 5417096
Abstract: A flat die thread rolling machine provides a cam drive for the reciprocating slide which operates through a linkage to cause reciprocation of the slide. The cam provides a dwell which holds the reciprocating die stationary before the commencement of the working stroke to allow insertion of a workpiece into the dies while the dies are stationary relative to each other. The cam produces slow acceleration of the reciprocating die during the initial portion of the rolling operation to prevent workpiece slippage. The working stroke exceeds one-half of the machine cycle. Die match can be adjusted while the machine is running. Separate adjustment means are provided to adjust the tilt, parallelism, and pitch of the dies, with the pitch adjustment permitting pitch adjustment while the machine is running and without affecting tilt and parallelism adjustment. A hydraulic drive is provided to power the machine and provide high torque during jog operations and speed control during normal running operation.

  • Patent number: 5417105
Abstract: A leak detection system (50) including a flow accelerator for directing and accelerating leaking gas toward a sampling probe (70). A probe input tube (72) is inserted into one end (62B) of a larger diameter adapter tube (60) to position the end of the tube (72) past a suction opening (62D). The other end (62A) of the adapter tube is positioned to receive leaking gas. A suction is applied to the suction opening, which tends to draw the leaking gas into the adapter tube end (62A). Some of the leaking gas is drawn into the suction opening, and some into the end of the sampling tube. The suction causes the leaking gas to be accelerated toward the sampling probe input port. The suction can be created by a venturi (66C) through which is passed a gas under pressure. The acceleration of the gas through the venturi creates the suction. The flow accelerator significantly reduces the time required to locate small gas leaks.

  • Patent number: 5417112
Abstract: Two geophones located above an underground pipeline are spaced from each other and adjacent to both sides of a benchmark location. As a pig travels through the pipeline sound waves are generated. As a pig approaches a benchmark location, sound waves are received first by the geophone which is closest to the source of the sound waves, that is, the upstream geophone and then by the downstream geophone. The geophones generate electrical signals that are fed to a comparator circuit which is connected to upstream and downstream indicators, one of which is activated when a pig passes the benchmark depending on whether the sound was first received by the upstream or downstream geophone. An alternate embodiment adds a magnetometer at the benchmark location capable of sensing changes in the ambient magnetic field caused by the passage of a pig.

  • Patent number: 5417122
Abstract: A fluid-coupled latch for a soil sampling system (including a sample barrel and a drive casing) includes an inflatable gland affixed to the sample barrel. When inflated, the latch engages the inner wall of the drive casing so that the sample barrel is held in a fixed position relative to the drive casing. The latch thus in effect rigidly couples the sample barrel to the drive casing so that the drive casing and sample barrel can be driven simultaneously into the soil while maintaining their initial relative positions. The pressure in the gland is regulated during sampling procedures. After the casing, barrel, and liners are advanced a selected depth into the soil, the latch is released by deflating the inflatable gland and the barrel and liners are removed using wire rope from a winch. The drive casing remains in the soil. An extension is attached to the drive casing.

Abstract: A portable rod-like device for depressing a vehicle pedal, such as an accelerator or a brake pedal to a predetermined setting and maintaining that setting in the form of a screw-threaded rod and a mating screw-threaded nut having a hook. The nut rides up the screw-threaded rod and engages the steering wheel of the vehicle while the other end of the rod engages the pedal. The rod depresses the accelerator pedal against spring pressure while the engine is operating and the accelerator pedal is depressed to a point whereby a predetermined setting has been reached on the tachometer of the vehicle, and maintained at that setting. The device can be finely adjusted in small increments. The foot at the free end of the rod frictionally engages the accelerator pedal and can be mounted in either a fixed position or can be swivel mounted.

  • Patent number: 5417129
Abstract: A ratchet wrench mechanism is set forth. It is constructed so that it advances on rotation in one direction and locks when attempting to rotate the ratchet in the opposite direction. It does not require incremental advances as occur with a toothed locking mechanism in the ratchet. Rather, the handle supports a socket which has a surrounding shoulder with upper and lower faces. The socket and shoulder have a gap to permit socket insertion over a bolt. The shoulder passes through wedge shaped chambers or cavities in the housing, and wedges loaded by a bias spring are forced towards the narrow end of the tapered chambers. Rotation in one direction is permitted because the wedges are retracted to the large end of the cavity, but rotation in the opposite direction is forbidden when the wedges move to the opposite and narrow end of the cavity.

  • Patent number: 5417132
Abstract: A pair of rotary die cylinders with lands having coacting cutting edges which cut blanks from a web of material passing through the nip of the rotating dies. In cross section each land has an outer face and a pair of spaced apart side faces which are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the chord of the outer face to provide a clean cut and facilitate release of the cut blank from the cutting blades as it emerges from the nip of the dies. The die cylinders are journalled for rotation by recesses with frusto conical locating surfaces in their opposed ends. Each die cylinder is made by machining the recesses in the opposed ends of a generally cylindrical workpiece of tool steel and then utilizing the recesses to locate and orient the workpiece relative to a cutting tool to produce a cylindrical surface on the workpiece concentric with the axis of the recesses and then to machine away portions of the periphery of the cylindrical surface to form the cutting blade lands thereon.

  • Patent number: 5417133
Abstract: A stamping and forming machine positively prevents slug pulling by stripping the slug off of the end of the punch as the punch is being withdrawn from the die opening after a blanking operation. This is accomplished by providing a die insert support in supporting contact with the die insert having an opening that is identical to the opening in the die insert, but that is rotationally or laterally displaced therefrom by a small amount. As the punch pushes a slug through the opening in the die insert, the slug encounters the displaced opening in the die insert support and is shifted slightly as it is forced into that opening by the punch. As the punch is withdrawn from the die insert opening, the shifted slug cannot return through the opening and is stripped off of the end of the punch.

  • Patent number: 5417134
Abstract: An apparatus for laterally positioning flat cable in a machine for performing an operation on the cable comprises a base and a pair of cable guides which are movable with respect to the base. Each of the cable guides has a cable guide surface configured complementary to a respective cable side edge. The cable guide surfaces are in opposing relationship. A linkage is connected for moving the cable guide surfaces convergently and divergently through respective proportional distances on opposite sides of a target plane of convergence between the cable guide surfaces. When the cable guide surfaces are spaced apart at a distance equal to or greater than the cable width and the cable is introduced between the cable guide surfaces, operation of the linkage so as to move the cable guide surfaces convergently causes the cable to become confined between the cable guide surfaces with the cable longitudinal axis aligned parallel to the target plane.
