Patent number: 5587082Abstract: New separation methods termed Enhanced Partitioning Fractionation (EPF) and High Osmotic Pressure Chromatography (HOPC) are described. The HOPC method involves passing large amounts of concentrated polymer solutions over porous material in a packed column. The concentration is high enough to allow for polymer chain overlap and to generate high osmotic pressures with respect to the porous material. The resulting high osmotic pressure causes increased separation of the polymer sample based on molecular size. The higher molecular weight components are concentrated in the initial fractions of eluent collected, whereas lower molecular weight components are concentrated in later fractions. The molecular weight of each fraction decreases with each successive fraction of eluent. The method is applicable to a wide variety of polymers and provides significant performance advantages to conventional preparative scale GPC.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Inventors: Iwao Teraoka, Min Luo

Patent number: 5587085Abstract: Fine particles are dewatered in an energy efficient process in which a non-polar liquid or a mixture of different hydrophobic liquids are used to displace the water from the particle surface. Thermodynamically, this process is spontaneous. The only energy required for this process is to recover the hydrophobic liquid(s) for recycling purposes. The hydrophobic liquids are recovered in gaseous form either by lowering the pressure or by heating, and converted back to liquid form for re-use. The most economical reagents that can be used for this purpose include propane, butane, pentane, and ethane. Carbon dioxide may also be used for the dewatering process described in the present invention. The process of dewatering by displacement is capable of achieving the same or better level of moisture reduction as thermal drying but at substantially lower energy costs.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Assignee: Virginia Tech Intellectual Property Inc.Inventors: Roe-Hoan Yoon, Gerald H. Patent number: 5587114Abstract: An aeration/mixing system for applying air or another gas to wastewater or another liquid. A main air supply pipe receives air from a blower and directs the air to a plurality of aeration modules each including a submerged conduit and a plurality of diffusers on the conduit. Flexible hoses connect the main pipe with the conduit of each module. In one form of the invention, a flexible line connected with each module has a sliding connection with a ballast block and may be pulled tautly and secured at the surface to hold the module down in the basin. Retrieval of the module for maintenance requires only that the line be released so that the buoyancy of the module floats it upwardly. A modified embodiment includes an inflatable bladder on each module which can be inflated to cause the module to float upwardly for retrieval.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1995Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Assignee: Environmental Dynamics, Inc.Inventor: Charles E.
