  • Patent number: 6035710
Abstract: A method exploits the spectral signature of cloud bases in microwave moisture sounder data to determine cloud base heights. This signature requires the accurate specification of cloud top height, which in a preferred embodiment, comes from the analysis of data provided by an electro-optical sensor (EO) such as the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument flown on operational NOAA satellites. The method includes a receiving step in which satellite EO (visible through infrared) and microwave radiance data of a view of the earth's atmosphere is received. The view has both location and time information. In a determining step, cloud top height is determined based on the EO and infrared radiance data. Moisture profiles of the view are retrieved in a retrieving step based on the microwave radiance data. Subsequently, in a determining step, cloud base heights of clouds in the view are determined using cloud top heights as a constraint in the retrieval of moisture profiles with tile microwave data.

  • Patent number: 6035714
Abstract: A high sensitivity, Z-axis capacitive microaccelerometer having stiff sense/feedback electrodes and a method of its manufacture are provided. The microaccelerometer is manufactured out of a single silicon wafer and has a silicon-wafer-thick proofmass, small and controllable damping, large capacitance variation and can be operated in a force-rebalanced control loop. The multiple stiffened electrodes have embedded therein damping holes to facilitate both force-rebalanced operation of the device and controlling of the damping factor. Using the whole silicon wafer to form the thick large proofmass and using the thin sacrificial layer to form a narrow uniform capacitor air gap over a large area provide large capacitance sensitivity. The structure of the microaccelerometer is symmetric and thus results in low cross-axis sensitivity. In one embodiment, because of its all-silicon structure, the accelerometer exhibits very low temperature sensitivity and good long term stability.

  • Patent number: 6035717
Abstract: A pipe (P) carries corrosive fluids (F). Ultrasonic measurements of the pipe's thickness are made with an instrument (10) to determine if it needs to be replaced. If the pipe is coated with a layer (L) of protective material (C), a time of flight (TOF) measurement is made to determine the velocity of ultrasonic pulses transmitted through the material from which the pipe is manufactured. A second measurement is made to determine the velocity of pulses through the coated pipe material. The pulse velocity is now a function of the coating thickness by knowing the two velocity values, the coating thickness is determined. An ultrasonic pulse measurement of the thickness of the coated pipe is then made. The coating thickness is then calculated by a processor (12) of the instrument. If the thickness value is less than a minimum thickness value (M), an indication is given that the pipe needs to be replaced.

  • Patent number: 6035744
Abstract: The invention concerns a process for the manufacture of a cutting insert (1) for thread cutting, with several cutting teeth (2-6) simultaneously engaged in incrementally cutting the thread profile. The blank is manufactured by pressing and sintering so that the relief angles of the flanks of the side cutting edges (9,10) of the individual teeth (2-6) are at least 3.degree. and the profile depth of the final cutting tooth (6) which makes the finishing cut on the thread fits within the required final measurement tolerances, while the thickness of the cutting insert (1) and the tooth width (b) of the cutting teeth (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) are oversized. Subsequently, the blank is mechanically processed on the back face (7) and/or the front face (8) until the tooth width (b) of the cutting teeth (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and the thickness (d) of the cutting insert (1) fit within the required final measurement tolerances.

Abstract: An improved gear wrench is disclosed having an indexing clutch assembly operably coupling an output shaft with a gear assembly. The indexing clutch assembly includes a rotor, a freewheeling mechanism rotatably coupling the rotor to a drive shaft, a stator, and an indexing mechanism operably coupling the stator to the drive shaft. The freewheeling mechanism provides driving engagement of the rotor and the drive shaft in a first direction and freewheeling or relative rotation therebetween in a second direction. The indexing mechanism appropriately positions the drive shaft in a predetermined indexing position when rotated in a second direction and prevents further rotation thereat. The present invention further includes an angular adjustment mechanism for adjusting the indexing position of the drive shaft relative to the indexing clutch housing.

  • Patent number: 6035747
Abstract: An extension bar that has a cylindrical hollow shaft that has two solid ends for use with socket type wrenches. At one end, a solid piece of metal is machined to a post to receive the socket. At the other end, the solid member has a recess formed in it to receive the post of the socket wrench. Unlike the extension bars available today, the recess for the socket wrench does not penetrate into the hollow shaft. This construction, unlike the others, prevents the extension from twisting when torque is applied by the wrench. Instead of having to overcome the twisting force before torque is applied to a fastener, the torque is transmitted directly to the fastener. This type of extension bar can be made in any length, even three or four feet. Even at those lengths, the extension does not twist. As a result, repair operations are faster and safer.

Abstract: A method and apparatus by which selected pile across the face of a web of pile fabric such as carpet may be raised or lowered in accordance with a pattern as the fabric passes through shearing apparatus so that certain pile of the pile may be sheared more than other pile to provide a sculptured affect. Nozzles extend across the width of the fabric and apply jets of air from controllable valves to impinge on the pile in its path to compress or raise selected pile in accordance with a pattern controller which controls the valves. Locating the nozzles so that jets of air impinge on the pile upstream from the shearing apparatus in a direction downstream toward the shearing apparatus will raise the pile while locating the nozzles so that the jets of air impinge upon the pile prior to the shearing location in an upstream direction will compress the pile. The pile which is raised is cut further than pile which is not raised and cut even further than the pile that is compressed.
