  • Patent number: PP11378
Abstract: A new and distinct variety of cherry tree, originating from a controlled cross of `Lapins`.times.`2N-39-5` made in 1976 is described. The resulting seedling was established in a selection block in 1985 and given the breeder's reference number `13N-6-59`. The variety has been established and is being maintained at the research facility. Evaluations began upon fruiting. The variety is stable with no variations occurring, and demonstrates qualities of the tree, flower, and fruit that in combination make the variety significantly different from from its parents and other fruiting cherry varieties, in that `Sumleta` has large kidney shaped fruit, with shiny, mahogany skin with fine light dots and dark red flesh. The fruit has a prominent suture and a hollow apex with and obvious dimple. The fruit matures mid season, about 5 to 6 days after `Van` and `Bing` and 4 to 5 days before `Lapins`. The fruit is very firm, has a sweet taste with some astringency, and is moderately susceptible to rain splitting.

  • Patent number: RE36687
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing recyclable paper pallets utilizes spool-shaped laminated supports which are wound on a spool-shaped mandrel utilizing adhesive coated paper strips. In one aspect of the invention, the spool-shaped laminated supports can be glued to conventional upper and lower pallet skin sheets also made of paper material, such as corrugated paperboard. In another aspect of the invention, the spool-shaped pallet supports are utilized in a system in which the pallet is integrated directly into a pre-strapped load. In this system, a slip sheet is strapped directly to the bottom of a load and the slip sheet is glued directly to the upper faces of an array of pallet supports, sufficient to support the load and to provide the spacers or standoffs for subsequent insertion of lifting equipment, such as a lifting fork, beneath the load. The inherent rigidity of the strapped load may be sufficient to compensate for the lack of rigidity of the thin paper slip sheet.

  • Patent number: 6058503
Abstract: Elbow and knee guards are used in sports in which the athlete must expect regular contact with the ground or floor. This guard utilizes hinged resilient members along the lateral direction of the joint and sliding slots which allow the guard to both rotate and deflect along the longitudinal direction. As the knee or elbow is flexed, the skin stretches in the longitudinal direction carrying the resilient members along and consequently the guard stretches and changes its shape to match the shape of the limb. The aluminum hinges allow the joint to flex in the lateral direction. The guard does not don the limb and thus eliminates chafing. The guard is placed over the knee or elbow. By pressing on the guard with the hands, the aluminum hinges will deform until the guard conforms to the contour of the surface.

Front, rear, and end portions include interior and exterior walls which encase a plurality of hollow chambers separated by partitions. Air within the chambers is expelled through the channels when the volume of the chambers is reduced as a result of pressure being exerted upon an exterior wall. Air is drawn back into the chambers when pressure on the wall is relieved to restore the volume of the chamber. The controlled exhaust of air from the chambers absorbs energy from a direct impact with the car bed. Front and rear shell portions further include a recess for securing the car bed to a seat by guiding a seat belt around the front side of the car bed. Straps are mounted to the rear portion of the shell through which a seat belt may be inserted to further secure the car bed to a seat.

  • Patent number: 6058531
Abstract: An improvement is provided in a bed having a side rail framework, and at least one dual-position rail assembly which is secured on one side of the bed. The improvement includes a rotatable structure upon which the dual-position rail assembly, is mounted in order to enable the dual-position rail assembly to move between two positively-stopped and automatically locked positions. A first of such positively-stopped and automatically locked positions disposes the dual-position rail assembly in an assist, vertically-oriented, position which is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bed. A second of such positively-stopped and automatically locked positions disposes the dual-position rail assembly in a guard, horizontally-oriented, position which is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bed.

  • Patent number: 6058532
Abstract: An lifting apparatus for elevating a selected end portion (e.g., head or foot) of a bed frame is fully removable from the bed frame so that it can be added quickly to either end of the bed frame or to a different bed frame. This is accomplished by providing a single removable connection between the feet of the bed frame and receptacles at opposed end portions of a support beam. The support beam member has opposed ends with the receptacles and an elevated portion with an underside that receives extendable portions of a pair of screw jacks. A reversible motor drive and an interface are provided so that rotation of the single motor drive in a selected direction operates both jacks to simultaneously move the beam member and the bed frame between minimum and maximum elevational positions. The user is provided with a control that operates the motor drive, the control having "up", "down" and "stop" control positions. An electrical cable interfaces the control with the motor drive.

  • Patent number: 6058534
Abstract: A surgical boot assembly for an operating room table includes a surgical boot, an adjustable support arm securable to the table, and an adjustable clamping assembly attaching the surgical boot to the adjustable support arm. The adjustable support arm includes an attachment, a support rod having an end pivotally attached to the attachment such that the support rod is pivotable about the end relative to the attachment, and a locking cylinder having a first end pivotally attached to the attachment and a second end pivotally attached to the support rod. The locking cylinder is infinitely adjustable over a range and can provide an assisting lift force. The locking cylinder preferably includes a cylinder, a piston within the cylinder and having an integral valve, and a separating piston within the cylinder. The piston and the separating piston divide the cylinder into first, second, and third portions.

  • Patent number: 6058536
Abstract: A mattress overlay consisting of two pieces of fabric joined along the longitudinal, or head to foot, edges and then joined transversely, from side to side, at predetermined distances along the longitudinal axis forming lateral, closed interior cell spaces. In the preferred embodiment, the joining method along at least one of the longitudinal edges uses openable and recloseable cooperating hook and loop pressure strips to allow access to the individual cells after manufacture. To provide even support throughout the resting area, the interior cell spaces are partially filled with a flowable filler material of Buckwheat hulls or a mixture of Buckwheat hulls and any other compatible material. The preferred embodiment allows resting comfort to be customized by adding or removing flowable filler from individual cell spaces as needed. The preferred embodiment has half of an openable and recloseable fastening device joined along longitudinal edge to allow attachment of two or more mattress overlays.
