  • Patent number: 6155110
Abstract: A method of testing a tire for rain groove wander is provided which allows a tire to be objectively tested in a laboratory wherein the objective test results closely correlate with subjective field analysis type data, thereby allowing for the subjective tire performance to be predicted while precluding the need for subjective field analysis of the particular tire. The method also allows objective testing of a single tire size by varying the radial loading in the laboratory test set, thereby precluding the construction of multiple tire sizes each having the same tread design. The method simulates rain groove road conditions and correlates objective analysis data obtained via the laboratory test methodology with subjective field analysis data of rain groove wander tire performance of other tires, thereby providing a substantially accurate technique for identifying the subjective performance of the tire without having to conduct the field testing to obtain such subjective field analysis data.

  • Patent number: 6155115
Abstract: A single-axis angular rate sensor is comprised of a transducer and associated electronics. The transducer consists of a symmetric planar inertia member supported by symmetrically disposed coplanar elastic beams. The inertia member is angularly oscillated about its center of gravity about a first axis. Rotation of the sensor about a third orthogonal axis results in Coriolis moments, causing angular oscillations about an orthogonal second axis. The angular oscillations about the second axis are restrained by means of voltages applied to electrostatic electrodes. These voltages are proportional to the angular input rate.

  • Patent number: 6155117
Abstract: A method for detecting the location of an edge, interface, seam or other structure of a workpiece uses one or two electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) to transmit an ultrasonic wave along the workpiece toward the edge and to receive a reflected wave. The velocity of the wave in the material is used in conjunction with the round trip time-of-flight (TOF) of the transmitted and reflected wave, to calculate the location of the edge. This is done by placing the transducer or transducers at known locations on the workpiece. A surface wave or 90 degree shear wave can be utilized and no contact is needed between the transducer and the surface of the workpiece. Rough and/or dirty surfaces and hostile environments can be accommodated while practicing the invention.

Abstract: The system generally comprises a nail that engages an assembled screw driving apparatus. The apparatus is typically stored in a ready position and moved to the load position in order to affix the nail to the apparatus. In the ready position, a top section of the bit extends beyond the end of the cylinder. The nail can now be easily fitted with the top section of the screw bit. The nail is fitted with the screw bit, and depressed into the apparatus. The apparatus automatically enters a drill position, in which the nail is locked to the apparatus and drilling begins. The nail will be released from the apparatus at a certain distance from the substrate. The nail is further rotated to drill the nail to a predetermined depth in the substrate. Once screwing is complete, the apparatus is removed from the nail and the apparatus automatically returns to the ready position.

Abstract: A tuning wrench for tuning optical fiber connectors has an enlarged portion from which extends a limiting portion having a diameter greater than the diameter of the opening in the ferrule housing portion of an optical connector. A tubular member protrudes from the limiting portion and has an internal diameter dimensioned to slide over the connector ferrule. The distal end of the tubular member has a pair of tangs adapted to fit within or openings in the front of the flange portion of the ferrule-barrel member of the connector. The distance from the face of the limiting member to the tangs is such that axial pressure on the wrench moves the flange rearwardly out of engagement with its housing but the face of the limiting member butts against the front of the housing before the spring member within the housing bottoms. Rotation of the wrench thus causes rotation of the ferrule-barrel assembly to alter the angular orientation of the eccentricity vector of the ferrule.

Abstract: An air deflection system and method which is specifically designed for use with reciprocating saws of the type widely used for construction projects. Such reciprocating saws are known to produce so much air-borne particulate matter that they can be a hazard to the eyes, head and respiratory system of the user. The air-borne debris also makes it difficult for the user to see the work being cut. The design provides a slip-on cover for air exit ports which has the effect of deflecting air and hence the particulate matter in a direction away from the head of the user. The resulting effect is a safer and more efficient sawing operation which is accomplished with a low-cost and easy to install deflection shield.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for driving a ramped drive assembly longitudinally, to drive a penetrator transversely, to cause the penetrator to penetrate and withdraw from a downhole tubular element. An anchor holds the tubing punch assembly in place in the downhole tubular element. A double piston assembly drives the drive assembly hydraulically in the downhole direction, thereby driving the ramp downhole, to force the penetrator outwardly to penetrate the tubular element. Thereafter, pulling uphole on the work string shears a shear sleeve, separating the housing of the tubing punch assembly from the work string. Further pulling on the work string partially withdraws the ramped drive assembly from the tubing punch assembly, thereby withdrawing the penetrator into the tubing punch assembly.

Abstract: A brake booster includes a solenoid disposed within a valve body. When the solenoid is energized under the inoperative condition of the brake booster, a piston associated with the solenoid is moved to its operative position to close a vacuum valve while opening an atmosphere valve. This allows the brake booster to be operated as an automatic brake without depressing a brake pedal. The brake booster also comprises output restriction means which may comprise a spring 55 shown in FIG. 1, for example, whereby as the output increases when the brake booster is operated as an automatic brake, the output restriction means operates to cease an increase in the output. With this arrangement, if the solenoid is energized inadvertently independently from the intent of a driver, the occurrence of a quick braking action is avoided, but a gentle braking action is assured, thus improving the safeguard.

  • Patent number: 6155157
Abstract: Past pistons have been susceptible to reduced longevity due to increased forces of combustion thereon during operating cycles of an engine. The present two piece unitary piston increases the longevity of pistons used with increased forces of combustion. For example, a head member has a crown portion defining a ring band portion having a bottom surface and a support portion. And, a skirt member defines a ring band support surface and a top surface. The head member and the skirt member have a preestablished material strength being generally the same. The head member and the skirt member are joined by an inertia welding process. The force of combustion acting on the crown portion is resisted by the ring band support surface being in contacting relationship with the bottom surface. Thus, the skirt member structure supports and resists the bending moment of the combustion forces on the head member.
