  • Patent number: 6161535
Abstract: A method and apparatus for increasing the circulating airflow of induced-draft, gas-fired multi-stage furnaces without creating conditions that result in cold spot corrosion therein. Control circuitry is provided to selectably increase the circulating airflow of the furnace during low stage operation. The control circuitry is arranged so that increases in the magnitude of the circulating airflow of the furnace are accompanied by predetermined increases in the magnitude of the combustion airflow of the furnace. The magnitudes of the circulating and combustion airflows are so related to one another that the temperature at the output of the heat exchanger is maintained at a value which is approximately constant, and which is high enough to assure that water cannot condense thereon. The control circuitry may include a relay or relay-like device that is connected to prevent the high stage solenoid of the gas valve from becoming actuated during low stage operation.

  • Patent number: 6161539
Abstract: The lung ventilator safety valve includes a valve housing, an armature connected to the valve housing, a shaft mounted at one end to the armature and having a poppet valve seal on the other end for sealing the vent in a valve closed position and for allowing a relief flow in a valve open position. An electromagnetic coil mounted to the valve housing adjacent to the armature when energized urges the armature to the armature closed position, and a return spring urges the armature to an open position. The poppet valve seal has an aperture extending through the poppet valve seal, so that when there is relief flow through the safety valve vent, the relief flow across the poppet valve seal creates a jet venturi effect to cause a negative pressure on the side of the poppet valve seal opposite the relief flow that biases the safety valve to open further.

  • Patent number: 6161546
Abstract: A system allows treatment of sublayers of tissue lying beneath an outer layer of tissue. The system includes an energy emitter able to heat predetermined areas of the tissue sublayers. The energy for heating typically is generated by a laser or lamp able to produce electromagnetic radiation in the infrared region to thereby cause tissue at the predetermined areas to heat and shrink. The shrinkage causes the shape of the outer layer or surface to change in a controlled manner that corrects the problematic surface formation, e.g., refractive error. An energy absorption modifier is used to avoid damage to the outer layer of tissue as energy is passed therethrough.

  • Patent number: 6161563
Abstract: A plumbing tool for providing a passageway through a blockage, such as a test cap or other blockage, in a fluid-carrying line. During the rough-in plumbing phase of construction, the drain pipe leading from the plumbing system in a building to the city sewer main in the street is positively sealed off by a test cap welded in the pipe at the location of the clean-out. Pressurizing the rough-in plumbing to test the same can then proceed knowing that if any leaks occur, they are in the branch plumbing on the building side of the test cap and not at or in the test cap. Following successful completion of the initial test, the top-out plumbing is completed, leaving the test cap welded in the clean-out or drain pipe. After the roof vents are in, the top-out test of the plumbing system is made, again knowing that if the system shows any leaks, they are the result of a failure in the plumbing work and not a failure of the test cap.

  • Patent number: 6161570
Abstract: A pilot operator and a relief valve are provided in the same housing. The pilot-operating mechanism is contained partially within the main closure element of the valve and partially within the valve cap. Inlet pressure to the valve is communicated to the pilot via an access passage extending through the main closure element. In response to high-pressure flow from the inlet, a pilot piston moves a spacer rod through the passage and into engagement with a spring-loaded vent closure. The piston-induced movement of the rod opens the vent to relieve the pressure behind the main closure element, which in turn permits the main closure element to open and relieve the inlet pressure through the valve outlet. Opening of the main closure element terminates flow through the access passage. When the inlet pressure is sufficiently reduced, the pilot piston is unseated by the spring force re-opening the access passage to allow the pressure behind the main closure element to increase and close the main closure element.

Abstract: A premix dispensing valve assembly for a beverage dispenser includes a housing which includes an inlet to deliver premix fluid, a compensator within the housing for subjecting a controlled pressure drop on the premix fluid which includes an outlet communicating exterior to the housing, and a regulator within the housing for applying a variable dampening effect against high fluid pressures that accompany the premix fluid upon entry into the premix dispensing valve assembly. The regulator is cooperatively linked to the inlet of the housing and communicates with the compensator. As such, integrating the regulator with the compensator optimally allows for premix fluid to maintain a constant pressure and, thus, prevent complications arising from loss of carbonation. The premix dispensing valve assembly further includes a premix delivery channel within the housing for communicating premix fluid from the inlet of the housing to the regulator.

Abstract: A high energy loss fluid control device includes a plurality of annularly-shaped discs stacked one upon another and a reciprocal plug in slidable contact with the discs. The discs form a plurality of flow passageways extending between an inlet and an outlet located at the inner and outer peripheries of the discs. Each of the flow passageways has a plurality of sections connected with right-angle turns. A first one of the sections is radially extending toward the inlet to cause fluid to act upon itself and expend energy by turbulent interaction. Immediately downstream of the first section, a second one of the sections is radially extending toward the outlet. The second section is generally straight and of a length adequate to regain control of fluid velocity by true frictional losses. The passageways can be formed by stacks of discs that cooperate to fully define intermediate passageways or by alternating flow-path discs and separator discs that cooperate to form the passageways.
