  • Patent number: 6161385
Abstract: A turbomachine, in particular a gas turbine, is in the traditional manner provided with air cooling of the components that are subject to a high thermal stress. The cooling system (21, 31, 41) is provided with elements through which another medium (25, 35, 45), for example water or steam, can be added to the cooling system during peak demand. This medium displaces cooling air (26, 36, 46) from the cooling system, the air being then available additionally in a heat generator (2, 4). This means that more fuel (12, 13) can be added without increasing the hot gas temperature (T.sub.1, T.sub.3) at the turbine inlet (301, 501), and the power is increased. The quantity of the medium added to the cooling system is controlled by control elements (24, 34, 44) as a function of a control deviation (P.sub.set -P.sub.act) of the power.

  • Patent number: 6161388
Abstract: A thermoelectric cooling apparatus which includes a Peltier device or a thermoelectric element coupled to a hot source and a cold sink. The hot source dissipates heat produced by the thermoelectric element. The cold sink is coupled to a mass to be cooled. A means for supplying power to the thermoelectric element is provided and a means for selectively thermally coupling the thermoelectric element to the hot source is provided. Selectively thermally switching the thermoelectric element to the hot source allows heat to be dissipated to the hot source when the thermoelectric element possesses excess heat. Dissipating the excess heat when the excess heat is present allows higher efficiencies to be attained in thermoelectric cooling.

  • Patent number: 6161392
Abstract: A combined thermodynamic power and cryogenic refrigeration system using a first and second (binary) working fluid has a low-temperature closed bottoming cycle and either a closed or open topping cycle. In the bottoming cycle a mixture of a first gas such as helium or hydrogen and a low temperature liquid such as liquefied nitrogen is isothermally compressed and then the liquid content is separated. The separated first gas is heated using heat from a second gas or ambient air expanded in the topping cycle and then the heated first gas is adiabatically expanded and supercooled while performing useful work and thereafter is mixed with the separated liquid to serve as a coolant and facilitate rejection of adiabatic heat and to supplement the cool gas/liquid fed to the compressor and thus completes the bottoming cycle. The bottoming cycle functions to cool the second gas during its compression in the topping cycle. The topping cycles are closed or open modified Brayton cycles.

  • Patent number: 6161393
Abstract: A control system for mobile air conditioning systems for controlling the rate at which the system compressor or clutch is cycled between operational and decreased refrigerant flow, by selectively controlling the response time of certain system control signals to flow demand changes including de-icing control, from interactions between de-icing control and flow control valves, as well as system overall control. Upon the detection of an icing condition, the response of the control system is delayed to a degree to control the rate at which the capacity of the compressor can be cycled with in design limits. The delay feature allows the differential used in differentiating between icing and non-icing conditions to be significantly reduced over that required in the prior art and thereby improving the performance of the air conditioning system.

The vehicle is driven onto a ramp support which is then quickly removed, causing the vehicle to drop onto a base whose distance below the ramp support corresponds to the residual rebound clearance associated with the particular vehicle design; the changes in the so-called wheel contact force when the car hits the base are measured. The process is characterized by the fact that the vibration characteristics of the body and one wheel at a time are measured, the measurement results, together with the measured values of wheel contact force, are fed into the known differential equations governing damped oscillations, and the characteristic data for the vehicle structure, namely, the body- and wheel masses, spring stiffness and damping constants, are calculated.

Abstract: A rotation pulse signal is generated according to a vehicle speed sensor. An acceleration detector calculates a threshold value of a pulse cycle on a subsequent occasion based on a latest pulse cycle and an acceleration which it is desired to detect. By comparing the pulse period on the subsequent occasion with the threshold value, it is determined whether or not a specified acceleration has been reached. After this determination, a threshold value for the subsequent occasion is calculated. By detecting whether the specified acceleration has been reached without calculating an acceleration value, the time from output of the pulse signal to detection of the specified acceleration is shortened.

Abstract: A geophone includes an optical element capable of changing its refractive index and path length in response to acceleration of the geophone. The sensor component comprises a mass mounted on a fulcrum for rotational movement against the force of a biasing member. An optical fiber is stretched between the casing of the sensor and an extension of the mass, such that rotational movement of the mass about the fulcrum varies the tension in the fiber. Varying the tension in the fiber varies the optical path length and index of refraction of the fiber, and these variations may be detected as a seismic signal. A first set of magnets dampens the vibratory movement of the mass, and a second set of magnets reduces the frequency of the movement of the mass.
