  • Patent number: 6163932
Abstract: The present invention comprises a method for biological oxidation of nitrogen in water, e.g., wastewater, nitrification, by using ammonia-rich water for the selection and enrichment of nitrifying micro-organisms in a separate aerated reaction volume, where organic matter already has been reduced. The nitrifying micro-organisms will get a competing edge compared to other species, as they are being able to obtain energy from the oxidation of ammonia into nitrate. The method can be applied to the activated sludge process by the introduction of a sludge aeration zone on the recycled sludge, and also be combined with a sludge anoxic zone, for denitrification, enabling a more reliable operation of biological nitrogen as well as phosphorus removal, by maximal use of reaction volumes with lower detention time and lower costs. It can also be applied to a fixed bed process.

  • Patent number: 6163947
Abstract: A method of making a novel brachytherapy device is disclosed. The device is formed from a hollow-tube-shaped seed-substrate, allowing the easy association of the device with suture material. This shape minimizes the chance of migration of implanted seeds due to better attachment to tissue. The distribution of the radioactive material on the exterior surface of an interior tube of the tubular device provides a relatively uniform radiation field around the hollow-tube-shaped brachytherapy seed source. Methods are disclosed of making brachytherapy devices that are inherently radioactive. Also disclosed are methods of making devices that can be rendered radioactive by the transmuting effects of neutron irradiation. Brachytherapy devices are disclosed that facilitate medical application and improve safety for patients and medical personnel.

  • Patent number: 6163950
Abstract: A self-aligning end effector is mounted to a robot for transferring a magnetic read/write head from a feeder to an assembly fixture. The robot positions the end effector above the head. A hollow needle extends from the end effector adjacent to the head. A vacuum is applied through the needle to draw the head to the end of the needle and the end effector is lifted away from the feeder. As the robot moves the end effector toward the assembly fixture, a nest with an alignment locator is lowered onto the head. The locator has tapered sides for orienting the head in a precise alignment. An upper surface of the head seats against a flat surface when it is aligned. The vacuum holds the head on the end effector throughout this operation. The nest is then withdrawn from the head so that it is again located on the end of the needle. When the end effector is located above the assembly fixture, the head is released into the assembly fixture by turning off the vacuum.

  • Patent number: 6163951
Abstract: A method and apparatus for lifting the tabs of a protective seal with edges embedded in a laminate. The base of the device has an annular top having a plurality of cartridge receiving apertures spaced equally from one another. Each hole receives a tab engagement assembly comprising a cartridge, a spring, and a finger have an abutment surface. The finger is pivotally fastened at one end within the slot of the cartridge and is biased away from the cartridge by the spring. When the base is placed in proximate relationship with the laminate seal patch secured to the substrate, the rotating base causes the abutment surfaces of the fingers to drag across the periphery of the laminate seal in a circular motion. The stresses created on the tabs of the protective seal cause the embedded edges to be lifted. The lifted tabs are accessible to the end user and the protective seals may be easily peeled from the substrate when desired by the end user.

  • Patent number: 6163961
Abstract: A method of making a multi-layer plain bearing comprises roll-bonding a relatively soft aluminum-tin alloy to a harder aluminum-based bearing substrate and then roll-bonding the composite to a steel backing. Following heat treatment conventional for reticulation of the aluminum-tin alloy the surface is machined to give a precise overall bearing thickness of which the aluminum-tin overlay is in the range of 0.01-0.10 mm, typical of an overlay but having greater fatigue strength and war resistance than conventional electro-deposited materials. Alternatively, the overlay substrate and backing strips may be roll-bonded simultaneously.

Abstract: A 3D laser leveler is provided for accurately locating distant parallel or extension lines. The 3D laser leveler has a base block and a rotator. The base block provides a base plane for resting upon a flat surface when in use, a first leveling unit for examining the leveling status of the base plane, and a pivot mechanism. The rotator is rotatably connected to the base block and rotatable around the pivot mechanism, and includes a housing for providing an internal accommodating space, a battery set and a laser unit received inside the accommodating space. The laser unit uses power provided by the battery set for generating a spanning plane laser beam that can be utilized to locate a spatial extension or a perpendicular line. In addition, a joining bracket can be included separately to connect the 3D laser leveler and a conventional beam leveler.

Abstract: A retrofitted extension for mini roller covers. Conventional rotatable paint spinners are used to expel retained paint from held paint roller covers or brushes. The conventional spaced flexible arms of the paint spinner are normally used to retain either a paint roller cover on the outside of the arms or the handle of a paint brush between them. A mini roller cover adaptor has a handle which is mountable in the spinner arms normally used to hold the paint brush handle to the paint spinner. This added mini roller adaptor handle has a rod member fixed to it and a rod retaining clip. The clip retains a mini paint roller cover to the rod member. By having a rod member that is the same exact size as the inner diameter of the mini roller cover, the paint adaptor can be used with the conventional spinner to spin the min roller cover clean.
