  • Patent number: 6163978
Abstract: A seed corn dryer capable of being switched between a single pass mode and a dual path mode of operation. The invention includes an air supply unit adapted to delivery drying air to only one dryer plenum in a dual path mode and to both dryer plenums in a single pass mode. One air supply unit includes a supply upper plenum and a supply lower plenum with a closable air passage therebetween. The dryer includes a center plenum partitioned into upper and lower plenums, with a series of corn bins on either side. Each bin has an upper inside air door, a lower inside air door, a lower outside air door and an upper inside air door. In one single pass mode, air is forced into both upper and lower dryer plenums, then either up or down in a single pass through an individual bin, exiting to the outside. In one dual path mode, air is forced only through the upper dryer plenum, then downward through a first bin, through the lower plenum, upward through a second bin, exiting through an upper outside air door.

  • Patent number: 6163979
Abstract: In a method for controlling a freeze drying process, a frozen product is arranged on temperature controlled surfaces (12) in an air-evacuated chamber (1) and undergoes a main drying and after-drying phase. During the main drying phase, the temperature of the ice surrounding said product is continuously measured. The pressure in the chamber and/or the temperature of the surfaces are modified during transition from the main drying phase to the after-drying phase. In order to avoid longer idle periods between the chamber (1) and the evacuation device (3, 4, 14) and to determine transition from the main drying phase to the after-drying phase, the pressure and/or the temperature of the surfaces during said transition are modified according to changes int he temperature of the ice.

  • Patent number: 6163980
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for continuous dehydration of sludge wherein, prior to dehydration, water is mechanically removed from the sludge, and the thus obtained sludge of cutting consistency is mixed with heated spheres. Dehydration is carried out at reduced pressure, wherein the sludge from which water has been mechanically removed is intimately mixed with the heated spheres in order to increase the heat capacity of the sludge. The dehydrated sludge and the cooled spheres are then separated from each other, the dehydrated sludge is removed, while the cooled spheres are reheated and subsequently added to fresh sludge that is to be dehydrated. The spheres are partly heated by means of water vapor coming from the sludge and partly by means of steam. The spheres are made from steel, having a diameter of 8-16 mm. The pressure in the system ranges form approx. 2 bars to approx. 0.05 bar. An apparatus is also provided for carrying out the method.

  • Patent number: 6163981
Abstract: A method and apparatus for drying material, especially wood particles, having moisture therein, comprising depositing the material to a selected depth onto a transport conveyor at the first end of a drying chamber. Heat is applied to the material as it is transported toward the opposite second end of the drying chamber so that, adjacent the second end, the material forms essentially two layers, a first layer having a first level of moisture therein and a second layer having a second level of moisture therein which is different from the moisture content of the first layer. Means are provided adjacent the second end for removing the second layer, which has the desired moisture, from the conveyor and directing that layer exteriorly of the chamber. The first layer, which has a remaining moisture content greater than the first layer, may be further dried to achieve the desired moisture content.

  • Patent number: 6163982
Abstract: In its simplest conceptual form, the applicant's invention is the structure of a conventional shoe sole that has been modified by having its sides bent up so that their inner surface conforms to a shape nearly identical but slightly smaller than the shape of the outer surface of the sides of the foot sole of the wearer (instead of the shoe sole sides conforming to the ground by paralleling it, as is conventional). The shoe sole sides are sufficiently flexible to bend out easily when the shoes are put on the wearer's feet and therefore the shoe soles gently hold the sides of the wearer's foot sole when on, providing the equivalent of custom fit in a mass-produced shoe sole. This invention can be applied to shoe sole structures based on a theoretically ideal stability plane as a basic concept, especially including structures exceeding that plane.

  • Patent number: 6163991
Abstract: A display is described that can be formed from a single sheet of card stock or other planar material. The display can be used as a greeting card, a photograph frame, a desk decoration, an award, a seasonal ornament that can be hung from a hook or loop and for other purposes. Spaced-apart, superimposed image panels are hinged or folded to spacers. The panels have apertures that define pictorial elements in profile. The spaced-apart panels may be placed in alignment and view in elevation to reveal a scene having substantial dimensionality. A different scene can be revealed when the display is made of unprinted plain card stock. It is possible, however, to print or emboss the display or to make it using colored papers. It is a particular advantage that the display can be manufactured in a continuous machine process using conventional stock-handling equipment. Another important feature of the article is that it can be stored or shipped flat and expanded when viewing is desired.

  • Patent number: 6164008
Abstract: A sturdy lightweight enclosure that will capture alive animals and fowl is disclosed herein. The application of a downwardly directed pressure on a trip pad on an interior portion of the trap by an animal causes the trap mechanism to release the door which falls under gravity and encloses the animal or fowl in the enclosure. The invention is characterized by having a bell crank wheel which rotatively translates a vertically downwardly directed force into a horizontally directed force which allows the trap to close. The trap is additionally provided with adjustable sensitivity to allow only animals having a desired weight to spring the trap. The sensitivity is adjusted through a plurality of holes in a rod which allows selective compression of an actuating spring. The greater initial compression on the spring the larger the animal must be to spring the trap.
