  • Patent number: 6186029
Abstract: A multi-speed transmission assembly including a gear box portion having first and second inputs and an output; the first input is connectable to a pump portion of the torque converter, whereas the second output is selectively connectable to an impeller portion of said torque converter such that separate torque converter and direct drive paths are established from a prime mover to the transmission output. Clutches are used to selectively couple the first and second inputs with their associated driving elements. The gear box includes two countershafts having their axes arranged to be parallel and spaced apart from each other and parallel and spaced from an axis of an output shaft. The axes are arranged in a triangular relationship which enables a “straight through” version, a “short drop” version and a “long drop” version of the transmission to be easily manufactured using a commonality of components.

  • Patent number: 6186033
Abstract: A wrench with interchangeable, pivotal, rotatable tool pieces on at least one end. A snap-on tool piece, preferably a wrench, fits into a pivotal end piece which is pivotably held to an extension arm by a toothed pin in toothed apertures. The extension arm is pivotably attached to a rotating shaft by toothed pins. There may be another pivotable snapon connection for a tool piece at the opposite end of the shaft. As an alternative, the tool piece fits into a pivotable end piece which is positioned at the end of a pivotably segmented shaft which fits inside the casing and handle of the tool. The location of the tool piece in relation to the handle may be easily set and secured. The multiplicity of possible tool pieces and positions makes this tool highly versatile and capable of reaching into hard-to-reach areas. • Patent number: 6186045
Abstract: A latching valve, useable in a multiplexed fluid control system, is switchable between two positions to control working output fluid flow to a corresponding actuator. The valve is latched by deriving a holding force from the working output flow. The latching valve may reside in one of the channels of the multiplexed fluid control system and eliminates the required modulations to hold position and reduces system wear of modulating and multiplexing components. The latching valve includes a working output port coupled with an associated actuator and a control chamber connected to a 3-way multiplexing valve to receive fluid signals. To provide a latching force, the valve includes bleed conduit that bleeds a controlled amount of fluid between the working output port and the control chamber to maintain the pressure in the control chamber. The last position of the latching valve is held until the next selective fluid signal from the modulating valve and multiplexer is received.

Abstract: A plurality of hydrostatic bearing pads are each integrally formed in a respective pin or journal member being used within a mechanical press machine. The hydrostatic bearing pads are supplied with pressurized fluid sufficient to create a combined hydrostatic and hydrodynamic effect between the opposed bearing surfaces of the pin and an associated bushing. The hydrostatic bearing pads are used in conjunction with rotational and oscillating bearings in which relatively little rotation, oscillation, or slow rotational speeds exist or where it is desired to minimize the effects of hydrodynamic action which creates bearing “lift off” on journal bearings. These types of bearings are particularly associated with crankshaft and connection journal bearings, connection pins, and pivot pins used by a rocker-type coupling assembly that couples a weight assembly to the press machine piston or slide assembly or drive assembly.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a multicolor web fed rotary printing press having printing units that can be moved along a linear section of a web by a positioning mechanism to allow easy access to each of the printing units. The easy access to the printing units significantly reduces maintenance costs and downtime of the press. In addition, the invention provides a printing press that has a reduced overall size and allows the printing units to be arranged in a nested formation during printing operations. This nested formation reduces fanout and paper waste. The linear web section can be oriented vertically or horizontally.

Abstract: Provided are methods of imaging a wet positive working lithographic printing member comprising the steps of providing a positive working printing member comprising a substrate, a hydrophilic layer, an infrared-absorbing layer, and, optionally, an ink-accepting surface layer; exposing the printing member to infrared radiation in an imagewise pattern removing by ablation greater than 10% by weight, and most preferably none of the infrared-absorbing layer and optional ink-accepting surface layer; and removing with water the laser-exposed areas of the infrared-absorbing layer and optional ink-accepting surface layer to reveal the underlying hydrophilic layer. These methods are advantageous in reducing airborne debris and vapors during laser imaging, in increasing the speed of laser imaging, and in providing excellent cleanability and image quality. The printing member may further comprise a primer layer underlying the infrared-absorbing layer with an adhesion-promoting agent present in the primer layer.

Abstract: A combined effect warhead device for forming at least one aerostable rod fragment and a plurality of small fragments by explosive formation. The warhead is centered about an axis and contains explosives and liners. A first liner forms an aerostable rod and a second liner forms a plurality of fragments, whereby upon detonation of the warhead, combined explosively formed projectiles are produced including the aerostable rod and the plurality of fragments. In a preferred embodiment, the first liner is unscored and curved, whereas the second liner is scored to facilitate formation of the plurality of fragments. The second liner is almost flat and includes raised portions on its surface to facilitate formation of the plurality of fragments. It is also preferred to include an interface material between the first and the second liner, preferably where the interface material is a combination of explosive material and plastic.

Abstract: The present invention is a monolithic ballasted penetrator capable of delivering a working payload to a hardened target, such as reinforced concrete. The invention includes a ballast made from a dense heavy material insert and a monolithic case extending along an axis and consisting of a high-strength steel alloy. The case includes a nose end containing a hollow portion in which the ballast is nearly completely surrounded so that no movement of the ballast relative to the case is possible during impact with a hard target. The case is cast around the ballast, joining the two parts together. The ballast may contain concentric grooves or protrusions that improve joint strength between the case and ballast. The case further includes a second hollow portion; between the ballast and base, which has a payload fastened within this portion. The penetrator can be used to carry instrumentation to measure the geologic character of the earth, or properties of arctic ice, as they pass through it.
