  • Patent number: 6190089
Abstract: A deep draft semi-submersible offshore structure suitable for conducting mineral exploration and production operations in deep waters of the oceans. The structure uses three or more caissons or columns equidistantly spaced from adjacent columns. The weight distribution and provision of liquid or solid permanent balance in the lower ends of each column make the structure stable without reliance upon water line displacement or tendons, as compared to conventional vessels. The center of gravity of the structure is maintained below its center of buoyancy, thus imparting an inherent absolute stability to the structure. The columns are retained in spaced relationship to each other by a plurality of horizontal braces or a combination of horizontal braces and diagonal braces. The major part of the structure is positioned below the water surface at sufficient depth to minimize the reaction to surface changes, thereby greatly reducing heave and angular response to surface wave action.

  • Patent number: 6190092
Abstract: A method for remedying contamination of a subsurface environment by a non-aqueous phase liquid that is denser than water (DNAPL). The subsurface environment has a resident aqueous phase and a DNAPL phase. A dense aqueous solution that has a density greater than a density of the DNAPL phase is introduced to the subsurface environment. The dense aqueous solution displaces the resident aqueous phase and causes the DNAPL phase to rise above the greater density aqueous solution. The DNAPL phase is then recovered, which substantially remedies the contamination of the subsurface environment.

  • Patent number: 6190097
Abstract: Significantly improved resistance to breaking while drilling in metal can be realized in twist drill bits having a web thickness taper which is about twice the web thickness taper specified in Standards and in common use in the industry. This creates much shallower flutes and flies in the face of conventional wisdom in the art which holds that the web taper rate should be low to maximize the amount of flute volume available to convey chips and sawdust out of the hole. A flute length of about 1/2″ less than the flute lengths specified by the Standards makes it possible to have such a large taper rate but still control variations in tolerances for the flute length. It also provides a marking zone for placing size indicia on the drill bit shank outside the portion which is gripped by the chuck jaws of a power drill.

Abstract: A bulk mail processing system (10) conveys bulk mail containers (C) from a receiving station (R) at which the container is placed on a conveyor (12) to an unloading station (D) at which the contents of the container are dumped. A video camera (22) obtains an image of the container which is transmitted to a processor (24). The image is processed to determine if residual mail (M) is left in the container after it is emptied. A mechanism (18) removes the container from the conveyor, empties the container, and then returns the container back to the conveyor. A controller (20) controls operation of the emptying mechanism. The controller is responsive to an input from the processor that all the contents of a container have been removed to replace the empty container on the conveyor.
