  • Patent number: 6269656
Abstract: Both a method and apparatus for producing liquified natural gas (LNG) at a well head or other source where cool high pressure natural gas is provided. The natural gas flow from the source is cleaned, if required, and is split into two portions. The first flow portion goes to a primary heat exchanger, then to a second heat exchanger or super cooler, and is thereafter throttled into a LNG tank wherein a part thereof flashes to liquid natural gas and a part thereof becomes a very cold saturated vapor to be vented from the LNG tank. This vent remainder of the first flow portion enters the super cooler as a coolant therefor. The second flow portion enters an expander where work is extracted and the temperature and pressure of the second flow portion are lowered. The cold lower pressure second portion combines with the partially warmed vent remainder of the first portion from the super cooler and passes into the primary heat exchanger as the initial coolant for the first portion.

Abstract: Apparatus and method to facilitate the insertion, alignment, and bending of metal sheets in a press brake machine is described herein. Automated insertion of properly aligned sheets into a bending machine can be accomplished using a press brake that includes at least two press brake fingers that act independently with respect to one another to determine whether the sheet has been received by the respective finger. The fingers are electrically coupled (via the sheet itself, for example) to a processor that communicates with. a robot. As the robot inserts the metal sheet into the press brake, it adjusts the alignment of the sheet until the sheet contacts the back planes of both press brake fingers. An electrical connection is formed when the metal sheet is received by the fingers (which are maintained at a nominal potential of 24V). When electrical connections are formed with both fingers, the processor tells the robot that the sheet is aligned and bending of the sheet can begin.

  • Patent number: 6269680
Abstract: An improved apparatus and method for measuring the concentration of hydrogen peroxide vapor or gas in a sterilization chamber. The hydrogen peroxide is measured spectrophotometrically in the ultraviolet region between 200 and 400 nm. Because water vapor does not absorb in the ultraviolet region, it does not interfere with the determination of the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide vapor. Although organic compounds have absorbances in the ultraviolet region, the organic compounds are removed by evacuating the sterilization chamber to low levels before doing the hydrogen peroxide determination. The ultraviolet light source is either a low pressure mercury vapor lamp with an emission at 254 nm or a deuterium lamp with an optical filter selective of 206 nm light. A movable gas cell can be used to measure the hydrogen peroxide concentration at various areas in the sterilization chamber.

Then, friction energies of the tire in free rolling, in a state in which the tire is provided with a toe angle, in a state in which a side force is applied to the tire, in a state in which a driving force is applied to the tire and in a state in which a braking force is applied to the tire are measured (step 102), respectively. An expected value of the tire wear life T1 is calculated from the rubber index Gi and the friction energies obtained above (step 104). The tire wear life is estimated from the expected value of the tire wear life T1 thus obtained (step 106).

Abstract: An assembly for measuring the mass flow and flow rate of gases such as are used in semiconductor fabrication processes. The assembly includes an axial flow passage, viz., a capillary tube with a bore of about 0.050 inch diameter and a wall thickness of about 0.002 inch, having a downstream end connected to a diffuser section having an axially symmetric, diverging passage. Gas exiting the diffuser section has a low pressure drop because the gas has expanded at a low, controlled rate, converting velocity head into pressure head, and because the tube and diffuser section passage are in-line, eliminating right-angle turns. The assembly also includes two resistance thermometers, coils of iron-nickel alloy wire about 0.0004 inch in diameter, providing a differential temperature measurement with a time constant of less than 4 seconds.

Abstract: A capacitive sensor for measuring a characteristic of a fluid or a filling depth of a liquid in a container is constructed of a printed circuit board that is either flexible or has stiff and flexible sections along its length. Metal coatings forming capacitor plates are formed, for example by printed circuit techniques on one or both sides of the circuit board which is then bent into such a configuration that two capacitor plates forming a capacitor face each other across a spacing that is accurately maintained by spacers. The bent shape of the circuit board has, for example, a U-configuration, an inverted S-configuration, or an e-configuration. Additional metal coatings are provided for screening purposes against adverse field influences. Conductor leads are provided on the printed circuit board for connecting the capacitor plates to an evaluating circuit, and the metal screens to a reference potential such as ground.

Abstract: A sensor for detecting levels of fluids and particulate matter is based on differences in dielectric constants of the various materials. The difference is reflected in different capacitance across electrodes immersed to different depths in such materials. A square-wave clock pulse is input into circuit composed of the capacitance and a resister in series. The output voltage is fed into a logic unit (such as exclusive-OR), which converts the exponential decay of the voltage into a pulse of uniform height with duration proportional to the time constant (proportional to the capacitance) of the exponential decay. The pulse is optionally fed through a low-pass filter to give a signal proportional to the duration.

Abstract: Two embodiments of an analog liquid level sensor are provided for measuring the level of a liquid in a container having a volume/depth relationship wherein each sensor has a resistance-to-float-displacement profile matched to the volume/depth relationship of the container. Each sensor includes a dielectric coated metal bar which acts as a heat sink and a ground plane. A pair of electrically spaced terminals and a printed circuit including a thick film resistor pattern and a metallization pattern having metallized graduations are formed on the metal bar for reduced electrical noise characteristics and improved hysteresis. The resistance of the resistor pattern is electrically coupled between the terminals and has a resistance which varies at different positions between the terminals. The metallization pattern is formed on the resistor pattern which, in turn, is formed on opposite sides of the dielectric coated metal bar.

Abstract: Upper electrodes (A1 to A5) are disposed on an upper surface of a disk-shaped piezoelectric element (10). On a lower surface of the piezoelectric element (10), an annular groove to surround origin O is formed at position corresponding to the upper electrodes (A1 to A5). At the portion where the annular groove is formed, the piezoelectric element (10) includes a flexible portion formed so as to have thin thickness. When the peripheral portion of the piezoelectric element (10) is fixed to the casing, the central portion positioned within the annular groove functions as a weight caused to hang down from the flexible portion. On the lower surface of the piezoelectric element (10), a lower electrode (B) is formed. When force is applied to the weight by acceleration, the flexible portion is bent. As a result, predetermined charges are produced in the upper electrodes (A1 to A5) with the lower electrode (B) being as a reference potential. Accordingly, applied acceleration can be detected. Abstract: A method for determining actual size of internal target defects by ultrasonic inspection is provided in which the amplitude of signals generated by ultrasonic inspection are compared to metallurgical size measurements obtained through the use of optical microscopes or scanning electron microscopes or scanning election microscopes. From this comparison, a correlation factor may be obtained to determine the accuracy of the ultrasonic measurements. For a particular sputter target material, defect sizes obtained by ultrasonic inspection may then be multiplied by the correlation factor to determine the actual defect size for that defect. The use of actual defect sizes to determine defect sizes from ultrasonic inspection provides a more accurate determination of defect sizes than prior methods and provides a reliable means for accepting or rejecting targets for critical circuit manufacturing operations.

  • Patent number: 6269701
Abstract: An improvement over conventional electromagnetic flowmeters which signal a measure of flow rate by controlling the current in a current signalling loop (also known as a sensing loop) and in which power for the flowmeter is derived from the current in the signalling/sensing loop. Conventional electromagnetic flowmeters use a standard current range (typically 4-20 mA), in which zero flow is indicated by controlling the current in the loop to a minimum predeterimened value and maximum flow is indicated by controlling the current to a maximum predetermined value. In the improved flowmeter of the invention, minimum flow is signalled by maximum current in the signalling/sensing loop and maximum flow is signalled by minimum current. This has been found to enable improved accuracy to be obtained at low flow rates without requiring complex flowmeter circuitry.

Abstract: A device samples chemicals adsorbed to a surface by applying a pulse of fluid to desorb the particles adhered to the surface. After the pulse of fluid, the region above the surface is enriched with particles dislodged from the surface. Suction is applied in the region above the surface to collect these dislodged particles, which are then transferred to a chemical detector for detection, identification, and quantification. A pulsed air sampler collects particles adhered to a surface and delivers the particles to a chemical sensor. An outlet ejects a fluid, preferably gas, pulse to dislodge particles from the surface and thereby enrich the density of particles above the surface. An inlet collects the dislodged particles for delivery to the chemical sensor.
