Patent number: 6289743Abstract: A testing and indexing apparatus and method for shoes is disclosed. A block is inserted into the interior of the shoe and clamps the heel portion of the sole fixed flat in relation to a plate. This plate is moved on rails until the ball or widest part of the shoe is set between laterally disposed clamps. The clamps are tightened on the ball of the shoe and the plate is fixed in position on the rails. Both the lateral clamping mechanism and the heel block clamp mechanism are attached to a generally rectangular base, however they are separate and the lateral clamping mechanism is axially rotatable along the axis of the clamped shoe and is attached to a torque wrench type device. Thus the shoe may be twisted axially to a pre-desired point and a reading taken to index the flexibility of the shoe in this dimension.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Inventor: Craig Norton

Patent number: 6289745Abstract: Disclosed is a high temperature insertion type flow element and mounting extension assembly for a gas flow measuring device. Designed to overcome the drawbacks associated with compensating for differential thermal expansion between the element and the duct wall, the element consists of an otherwise conventional insertion type flow element, that incorporates the use of a mounting extension assembly and an expansion fitting. The mounting extension positions the element head in an offset manner from the gas duct, placing the element head in a position away from any insulating materials encasing the duct, allowing for convenient access to the instrumentation and cleaning ports. The expansion fitting stabilizes the element tubes within the duct while absorbing any differential thermal expansion.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Inventor: James Bowers

Patent number: 6289746Abstract: A thermal pulsed micro flow sensor includes thermal sensors positioned in a fluid channel at downstream positions relative to a heater. Flow rate is measured by determining the time that it takes a thermal pulse to pass between two of the sensors. Since the resolution of the measurement increases with increasing distance between sensors while the accuracy of the measurement decreases, there is a conflict between the requirements of accuracy and short response time, as well as between accuracy and resolution. By providing at least three sensors and by varying the distances between the sensors, however, it is possible to select a pair of sensors having the highest resolution required by the application in which the sensor is used, while still ensuring that the velocity measurement is within the range of velocities accurately measurable by the selected sensors.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Industrial Technology Research InstituteInventors: Chien-Chung Fu, Cheng-Kuo Lee, Ching-Yi Wu

Patent number: 6289748Abstract: A magnetostrictive sensor for outputting a signal representative of torque on a shaft includes one or more excitation coils that generate magnetic flux which permeates the shaft and pickup coils that detect the flux after the flux passes through the shaft. Torque on the shaft affects the magnetic flux passing through the shaft. A coupling member such as plural rollers or powder metal poles are disposed in the flux path and touch the shaft such that no air gap exists in the flux path. Consequently, the sensor is comparatively sensitive, and is not unduly effected by shaft run-out.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Yingjie Lin, Daniel J. Patent number: 6289782Abstract: A spotting rifle barrel is aligned and retained relative to a launch tube and a spotting rifle receiver housing. A first annular lug is coupled to an outer portion of a breech end of the spotting rifle barrel. A second annular lug is coupled to an inner portion of the spotting rifle receiver housing. The spotting rifle barrel extends through the second annular lug so that a forward end of the first annular lug abuts an aft end of the second annular lug. The forward end of the first annular lug and the aft end of the second annular lug meet at a complementary radius of curvature. The first annular lug is retained in an abutting relationship with the second annular lug. A boresight adjustment assembly cooperates with a muzzle end of the spotting rifle barrel to adjust the boresight of the spotting rifle barrel while allowing for axial movement of the barrel.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Fred W. Patent number: 6289785Abstract: A swash plate type compressor that provides long lasting high lubricating performance to the sliding contact surfaces of a swash plate and shoes. The surface of the swash plate or the shoes on which the swash plate comes in sliding contact with the shoes is provided with an alloy plating layer, in which tin is the main component, as a surface treating layer. A coating layer, in which molybdenum disulfide is the main component, is formed as a solid lubricant layer on the foregoing plating layer. Preferably, the swash plate is made of aluminum or an aluminum alloy, and its surface is provided with the plating layer and the coating layer. More preferably, the coating layer contains graphite.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1997Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Toyoda Jidoshokki SeisakushoInventors: Hayato Ikeda, Masafumi Kato, Takayuki Kato

Patent number: 6289786Abstract: A vehicle brake actuator including an improved piston assembly having a piston plate including an upstanding annular rim portion and a piston rod including a shank portion having a generally cylindrical head portion and an annular rim portion on a free end of the piston rod head portion which is deformed radially into a cylindrical internal surface of the piston plate upstanding rim portion, permanently attaching the piston plate and rod. The method includes piercing and extruding the upstanding rim portion of the piston plate and forming radially projecting teeth on an external surface of the head portion of the piston rod, driving the head portion of the piston rod into the upstanding rim portion of the piston plate, preventing relative rotation of the piston rod and head. The improved piston assembly of this invention eliminates welding, permitting finishing of the piston rod and plate prior to assembly and reduces cost.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2000Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Indian Head Industries Inc.Inventors: Ronald S. Patent number: 6289787Abstract: The vane actuator according to the present invention is capable of operating effectively at a working pressure greater than 100 psig. The vane actuator comprises a vane shaft rotatably extending through a casing and a vane disposed within the casing defining a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber therein. The casing includes stiffening members for resisting deflection of and maintaining an internal seal within the casing when exposed to a pressure of 150 psig. The stiffening member may be located in the range of about 10° and 20° on either side of a casing centerline to minimize deflection of the casing when exposed to a pressure force.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1999Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: K-Tork International, Inc.Inventors: Fred R. Patent number: 6289788Abstract: An actuator for rotating a shaft includes a housing having a first port, a second port and a drive track. A first drive means is coupled to the first port and a second drive means is coupled to the second port. An array of balls which are spaced apart by spacers define a drive train extending from the first drive means to the second drive means via the drive track. A drive pin which extends outwardly from the shaft is connected to the drive train and the first and second drive means are driven so that the drive train will rotate the drive pin and hence the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2000Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Farnow PTY LimitedInventor: Stephen Wayne Holtom
