  • Patent number: 6338253
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the storage and delivery of process gases to laser generators. The process gas is cooled to a few degrees K, at the required work pressure, to reach a desired density, in the order of hundreds of kg/m3. The cooled gas is then stored in a cryogenic environment at the work pressure. At the moment of use, the process gas is gradually released from the cryogenic environment and concurrently heated. the process gas flow rate from the cryogenic environment is controlled, so as to obtain the required work flow rate. The heat supplied to the gas is controlled, so as to maintain it constantly at the required work pressure. The heating of the process gas may be controlled synchronically with the flow rate of its release from the cryogenic environment to maintain the pressure substantially at its work value.

  • Patent number: 6338266
Abstract: A method for identifying an unknown gas using a diffusion limited sensor providing an electrical signal output when exposed to the gas. According to the method, a sensor is disposed in a chamber of fixed volume and having a gas input and gas output through which the gas flows, and the chamber is connected to a source of a known test gas of known concentration and known diffusion coefficient Dk. • Patent number: 6338267
Abstract: A device for rejecting noise in an ion-sense ignition knock signal compares an integrated knock signal to a peak knock signal multiplied by a time factor to determine the presence of noise. A bandpass filter coupled to an engine's spark plug through ion-sensing circuitry generates a filtered knock signal. The filtered knock signal is passed through a rectifier to produce a rectified knock signal. The rectified knock signal is then passed through an integrator and a peak detector to produce an integrated knock signal and a peak knock signal, respectively. The peak knock signal is multiplied by a predetermined time factor and the result is compared to the integrated knock signal. If the result is less than the integrated knock signal, then no noise disturbance occurred and the integrated knock signal is passed on to a knock detector.

  • Patent number: 6338269
Abstract: A glide head includes a transducer mounted on a side surface, e.g., the leading side, as opposed to the top surface of the glide head slider. Thus, a suspension arm may be mounted to the top surface of a small glide head slider, e.g., thirty percent, without interference from the transducer. The glide head slider may include a notch or groove on the side surface into which the transducer is at least partially inserted to assist in securely mounting the transducer to the glide head slider. The height of the glide head slider is increased to accommodate the thickness of the notch, and thus, the glide head slider may have a height to length ratio of forty percent or greater. For example, a thirty percent glide head slider may have a height to length ratio of approximately seventy percent. The transducer is laterally mounted to the side surface of the glide head slider such that an axis between the collectors of the transducer is horizontally oriented.

  • Patent number: 6338272
Abstract: In order to determine parameters of closed containers, primary mechanical oscillations are excited in a container wall. The secondary oscillations which are excited in the container by the primary mechanical oscillations of the container wall and which occur within the space between a closure and the liquid are picked up and analyzed, the parameters being determined from the ascertained frequency characteristic of these oscillations. In addition, the primary oscillations of the closure can also be picked up and analyzed, the internal pressure prevailing in the container being determined from the frequency of these primary oscillations. The frequencies of the primary and secondary oscillations can be determined by analysis of the frequency spectrum. The secondary oscillations can be picked up separately from the primary oscillations in that only those oscillations are picked up which occur within a time measurement window within which the primary oscillations have already decayed.

The cavity may be evacuated or filled with specific gases at specific pressures. As such, the invention finds application in the packaging (vacuum or controlled environment) and production of a variety of transducers including but not limited to pressure sensors, flow sensors, optical devices (e.g., infrared detectors, ccd camera, and flat-panel displays) and resonating devices, such as gyroscopes, accelerometers, yaw sensors, telecommunication devices, etc.

Abstract: A unidirectional and bidirectional optical fiber couplers using polymer optical fibers having mirrors formed within the polymer optical fibers for reflecting optical signals. The mirrors comprise a notch having at least one surface angled with respect to the central axis of the optical fiber for reflecting the optical signal perpendicular to its central axis. A unidirectional embodiment allows input optical signals to be coupled from any combination of input optical fibers and transmitted into any combination of output optical fibers. A bidirectional embodiment allows optical signals from tapping fibers to be reflected in opposite directions along a first, or BUS optical fiber. Another aspect of the present invention is an apparatus and method for controlling the depth of the notch by monitoring residue power through the optical fibers while the notch is being cut.

  • Patent number: 6338292
Abstract: The invention provides camouflage in both the visual spectrum and the infrared spectrum by emulating the infrared radiation of an object's background and the visible radiation of an object's background, effectively cloaking the object from detection. Initially, the temperature and color of the background against which an object appears is determined. The external surface of the object, or alternatively a shield around the object, is then heated or cooled using thermoelectric modules that convert electrical energy into a temperature gradient. The ability of the modules to be either cooled or heated permits the output of the modules to be altered to match the temperature of an object's background. In combination with these thermocouples, the invention utilizes choleric liquid crystals to alter the visible color of an object.
