  • Patent number: 6340196
Abstract: A motor-vehicle convertible top has a flexible and waterproof outer layer defining a roof having edges and an inner surface, a pair of sides joined at the edges to the roof, and a rear wall extending between the sides and a rear edge of the roof. A heat- and sound-insulating inner layer of a foamable plastic is bonded directly to the inner surface of the roof and inner surfaces of the sides. A pair of reinforcing bands extending along the edges are fixed to the layers. A plurality of crosswise rigid reinforcing struts extend between the bands and secured to the inner layer. The outer layer has a textile inner surface to which the inner layer is directly bonded. The inner layer is molded in place in a closed mold under 140 bar to 150 bar pressure, so that it is integrally united with the outer layer. The inner layer is polyurethane and has a Shore D hardness of about 40 and a polyol:isocyanate ratio of about 100:38 by weight. Furthermore the inner layer has a thickness of between 2 mm and 6 mm.

  • Patent number: 6340200
Abstract: A pillar outer of a front pillar of an automotive vehicle comprises a stiffener and a flange portion connecting to a pillar inner. A peripheral portion of a windshield is fixed to a front face (a face orienting outwardly of the vehicle) of the flange portion via a plastically deformable member which can be deformed easily and plastically when a load is applied thereto in a longitudinal direction of the vehicle body. When an impact generated when an obstacle comes to interfere with the windshield is transmitted to the plastically deformable member, the plastically deformable member is easily press collapsed by the load, and the impact that is to be received by the windshield and the obstacle can be absorbed through the impact absorbing action. In addition, since the front face of the peripheral portion of the windshield is disposed flush with an outer wall portion of the pillar outer, a connecting portion between the two members is made flush with those members to thereby reduce the air drag thereat.

  • Patent number: 6340201
Abstract: A construction machine adapted to suppress transmission of vibrations from a main frame to a cab. The cab is supported on a bed frame by anti-vibrational mounts, each provided with a laminated rubber body having relatively high rigidity against vibrations in vertical directions and relatively small rigidity against vibrations in horizontal directions. A floor panel of the cab is connected to the bed frame by horizontally mounted oil dampers constituting vibration attenuators. Consequently, when the bed frame is vibrated, the cab undergoes horizontal parallel movements due to flexure of the laminated rubber bodies, thereby preventing occurrences of pitching, rolling and yawing vibrations. Even if residual vibrations occur on the cab due to the resilient restoring force of the laminated rubber bodies, such residual vibrations can be attenuated by the oil dampers, thereby preventing the phenomenon of resonance which might otherwise result from the residual vibrations and to improve the amenity within the cab.

  • Patent number: 6340202
Abstract: A public transit vehicle has a vehicle body having a roof defining an interior ceiling surface, two side walls each extending longitudinally of the vehicle including an upper side wall portion connecting to the roof and a row of windows underneath the upper portion, a central aisle and two rows of seats each on a respective side of the aisle and along the side wall at the windows. Each window comprises an outer pan attached into the window opening in the frame and a pane structure pivotally mounted in the pan. The pan is formed by four sides each of which is integrally defined by a web bridging the width of the frame, an exterior flange projecting outwardly and an interior flange projecting inwardly with the pan held in place by adhesive between the exterior surface of the frame and the exterior flange and between the web and the corresponding surface of the frame. The pan is thus imperforate to prevent moisture penetration.

  • Patent number: 6340203
Abstract: An outer panel is made thinner than an inner panel, and a rear face facing a front door is folded so as to form a valley groove hollowed toward the interior of a tube constituted by true outer panel and the inner panel, whereby when a large magnitude of external force is applied to a front face in a rear ward direction, the outer panel is allowed to be deformed more largely than the inner panel to thereby collapse the valley groove, whereby the rearward travel of the rear face can be reduced.

  • Patent number: 6340207
Abstract: A seat providing improved comfort includes a pair of moving seating assemblies. A motion mechanism provides each seating assembly with rocking movement and vertical movement. The seating assemblies are provided at a neutral angle that corresponds to the particular application of the seat. The amount of rocking movement and vertical movement is based on the neutral angle. In concert, the neutral angle orientation, rocking movement, and vertical movement cause the weight supported by an occupant's seat bones, posterior, and thighs to be optimally distributed on the seating assembly, improving seating comfort as applied to a given seating environment.

Abstract: A contact lens that reduces power distortion and lens contact with the corneal surface resulting from lens flexure. The contact lens (10) is designed to include a central optical portion, a scleral skirt (90), and a transition portion (34) therebetween, overlying the cornea, the posterior surface of which is conformed to the local geometry of the underlying portion of the cornea, including corneal tilt and distortion. In an alternative embodiment representing a less expensive lens, the transition portion is designed to conform to a statistically average cornea. The central optical portion may have a posterior surface which is customized, is toric or spherical, depending on whether a custom or inexpensive soft lens is being designed.

  • Patent number: 6340230
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for enhancing the performance of a reflective liquid crystal display system. The high-contrast color splitting prism system utilizes a “double-passed” prism assembly. Polarized light enters the prism assembly, is color-split and emitted as separate colors to spatial light modulators which reflect each color in accordance with a desired image. The reflective light is passed, once again, through the prism assembly where the separate colors converge and propagate to a projection lens for display of the image on a screen. A waveplate retarder is positioned between the liquid crystal display and the polarizing element. The waveplate retarder is tilted with respect to the optical axis to eliminate the deleterious effects of the Fresnel reflections at the interfaces of the waveplate retarder.

  • Patent number: 6340239
Abstract: An indicator light comprises a source, an optical plate adapted to straighten out the incident light towards an average direction generally parallel to an optical axis, and a flux-distributing and recuperating cup interposed between the source and the plate in order to distribute the light over the inner surface of the plate. According to the invention, the optical plate has a height and a width of the same order of magnitude and possesses optical configurations having varied coefficients of transmission of the light, and the cup provides a given distribution of the light, both in the horizontal direction and in the vertical direction, which takes account of said coefficients. As a result, an illumination is obtained at the exit from said plate which is essentially constant in the horizontal direction as well as in the vertical direction.
