Abstract: A tilt steering apparatus has a pivot fixed to, for example, a pair of fixed side plates of a vehicle body. The pivot is inserted through a connection hole provided in a steering column. At the time of tilt adjustment, the steering column is swung around the pivot. In either one of an inner peripheral surface of the connection hole and an outer peripheral surface of the pivot opposite thereto, a projection extending in a substantially circumferential or axial direction is formed in contact with the other peripheral surface. Consequently, the contact area between the pivot and the connection hole is reduced, thereby reducing friction therebetween. When the pivot is pressed into the connection hole, the projection is suitably crushed, so that fitting between the pivot and the connection hole is loosened, which is useful for the reduction in the friction therebetween.

Abstract: Composite materials comprising at least 60 volume %, preferably 70 volume %, of particles of finely powdered filler material in a matrix of poly(arylene ether) polymer material are made by forming a mixture of the components, forming the required bodies therefrom, and then heating and pressing the bodies to a temperature sufficient to melt the polymer and to a pressure sufficient to disperse the melted polymer into the interstices between the filler particles. Surprisingly these polymer materials can only be effective as bonding materials when the solids content is as high as that specified, since with lower contents the resultant bodies are too friable. This is completely contrary to accepted prior art practice which considers that composites are progressivly weakened as the solids content is increased, so that such content must be limited.

Abstract: In a piston-cylinder assembly comprising a cylinder in which a piston rod is installed with freedom of axial movement and which is filled with a blocking medium, a braking device becomes active when the piston-cylinder assembly moves faster than a defined speed and thus limits the speed to a desired extent. A valve body divides the cylinder into two working spaces, which are connected to each other by at least one flow-through opening. As soon as the defined speed is exceeded, the dynamic pressure in the working space elastically deforms a disk, which has the effect of at least partially sealing off the flow-through opening(s) in opposition to the forces trying to keep them open. The elastic deformation of the disk represents a closing movement relative to the cross section of the flow-through opening(s). The disk takes the form of a valve ring, which is installed in a valve ring groove with a certain freedom of axial movement.

Abstract: The invention is in a composition which is useful to dampen noise and vibrations which in composition can be applied to and adhered to a substrate. The composition comprises an emulsion or dispersion of asphalt in water and fillers. Preferably the fillers are alkaline earth metal or alkaline metal carbonates, or sulfates. In another embodiment, the invention is a process for applying a damping composition to a substrate which comprises contacting a composition of an emulsion of asphalt in water and a filler with a substrate. Preferably the asphalt emulsion on the surface of the substrate is exposed to a source of heat so as to dry the composition on the substrate. In a preferred embodiment the substrate is a surface in an automobile such as the floor-board, trunk well, wheel well, rocker panel or underbody.

Abstract: Concept for a self-compacting, self-levelling High Performance Concrete by addition of 2-10% palygorskite with an aspect ratio (length:diameter) of more than 35. The addition of palygorskite in combination with a superplasticiser lends itself to control of the ratio between viscosity and yield strength of the fresh concrete. Good visco-elastic properties, which assure high filling capacity, good flow properties and stability of the microstructure are obtained through this concept. Concrete produced in accordance with this invention is particularly characterised by its self-compacting properties, its filling capacity and its high stability during pumping even at high pumping pressures of 100 to 200 bars.
