Publication number: 20020078919Abstract: During stratified-charge combustion operation of a direct-injection spark ignition engine, at the cylinder compression stroke, a tumble is generated which flows between a spark plug electrode and a piston crown surface toward an injector. A fuel is injected from the injector in correspondence with the cylinder ignition timing by controlling the penetration of fuel spray from the injector to correspond to the tumble flow rate so that the fuel spray may go against the tumble, become a flammable mixture at the cylinder ignition timing and stay near the spark plug electrode. In the late stage of the compression stroke, diffusion of the flammable mixture is suppressed with squishes. Thus, fuel spray behavior in the combustion chamber is controlled to allow suitable mixture stratification over a wide engine operating condition range. This improves combustion quality and extends a stratified-charge combustion zone thereby providing enhanced fuel economy and power output.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 29, 2001Publication date: June 27, 2002Inventors: Takehiko Yasuoka, Noriyuki Ohta, Hiroyuki Yamashita, Masatoshi Seto, Masakazu Matsumoto, Fumihiko Saito, Keiji Araki

Publication number: 20020078921Abstract: The present invention relates to a variable tumble flow-generating device, which comprises: a bulkhead for dividing an intake port into a first passage and a second passage; an opening degree control valve for selectively changing an opening degree of the first and second passages; and driving means for operating the opening angle control valve. This variable tumble flow-generating device can generate tumble flow by making air flow through different passages while minizing a flow resistance of air supplied into the combustion chamber, and which has a simple structure so that a limitation in its installation space in relation with other parts can be avoid. Also, the variable tumble flow-generating device is manufactured by adding only a structure where the bulkhead is previously assembled with the intake port core of the prior art. For this reason, this is a simple structure and thus is manufactured at inexpensive costs.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 26, 2001Publication date: June 27, 2002Inventors: Gyu-Hwan Kim, Gyu-Han Hwang

Publication number: 20020078923Abstract: A fail-safe mechanism of an air induction control apparatus for automotive engines is provided which is designed to hold a throttle valve at a middle position when a valve actuator has failed to move the throttle valve. The fail-safe mechanism includes a middle position hold stopper, an opener lever connected to the throttle shaft, and a first and a second coil spring. The first coil spring works to exert a first spring pressure on the opener member in a first rotational direction in which the throttle valve is rotated from a fully opened position to the middle position. The first coil spring is urged at an end thereof into constant engagement with the middle position hold stopper to hold the opener member from rotating in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction. The second coil spring has a first and a second end between which the opener member extends. The first end abuts against the middle position hold stopper.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 27, 2001Publication date: June 27, 2002Inventor: Katsuya Torii

Publication number: 20020078924Abstract: An output timing of an opening degree command value &phgr;total is delayed by a predetermined delay time Tdly. A predictive throttle opening change &Dgr;&thgr;, calculated by using an electronic throttle model M4, is added to a present throttle opening degree &thgr; to obtain a predictive throttle opening degree &thgr;f at an intake valve close timing. Then, a provisional predictive charged air amount Gcf is calculated based on the predictive throttle opening degree &thgr;f by using an intake system mode M5. Then, a predictive change &Dgr;Gc of the charged air amount at the intake valve close timing is calculated by derivative and integral processing the provisional predictive charged air amount Gcf until the intake valve close timing. Then, the predictive change &Dgr;Gc is added to a base charged air amount Gbase calculated by a base intake system model M8 to obtain a final predictive charged air amount Gc.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 5, 2001Publication date: June 27, 2002Inventor: Toyoji Yagi

Publication number: 20020078925Abstract: An engine control system for use in automotive vehicles is provided which is designed to execute given control tasks, for example, at a 30° angular interval of a crank shaft of the engine determined by sequential inputs of crank angle signals from a crank sensor. If a failure of the crank sensor has occurred, it becomes impossible to determine the 30° angular interval of the crank shaft. In this case, the engine control system works to calculate one-third of an interval (e.g., a 90° crank angle) between consecutive inputs of cam angular position signals provided by a cam sensor to define a dummy 30° crank angle as a trigger for initiating the control tasks.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2001Publication date: June 27, 2002Inventor: Hidetoshi Kobayashi

Publication number: 20020078933Abstract: When starting an engine, the engine is driven by a starting motor and, at the same time, a fuel heating heater can be operated. If the engine is stopped and then immediately restarted, the operation of fuel heating heater is controlled according to the operation time of the fuel heating heater in the last operation. That is, if a period of time is brief between a stopping and a restarting of the engine, heat generated when the fuel heating heater was operated last remains and, in consideration of the amount of that residual heat, generation of heat by the fuel heating heater is restricted.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 12, 2001Publication date: June 27, 2002Applicant: TOYOTA JIDOSHA KABUSHIKI KAISHAInventors: Keizo Hiraku, Nobuhiko Koga, Hideki Suzuki
