Abstract: A fastener includes first and second tracks. The first track includes a first profile, and the second track includes a second profile for interlocking with the first profile. The fastener extends between opposing ends. The first and second profiles at each of the opposing ends are sealed to each other using a laser. In one embodiment, the fastener is initially continuous and is subsequently divided into segments by simultaneously cutting and sealing the fastener at spaced target locations using the laser. The segments are associated with respective plastic bags. At each of the target locations, the laser directs a laser beam at the fastener such that the laser beam cuts through the first and second profiles and simultaneously seals the first and second profiles to each other on opposite sides of the cut. The seals on the opposite sides of the cut terminate respective ends of adjacent ones of the segments.

Abstract: A method for forming metrology structures on a wafer on which magnetic transducers are being fabricated is disclosed. The metrology structures have a measurable electrical resistance which is an accurate surrogate for a physical dimension of a structure of the magnetic transducer, such as a pole piece tip. The metrology structure is preferably a resistor with pads usable with a four point probe. The resistor is preferably formed by creating a sacrificial pole piece structure over a pad of resistive material. The narrow dimension of the pole tip is then used as a mask to replicate the width of the pole tip in the resistive material through a milling process which removes resistive material outside of the masked area of the resistor pad. Control structures with unmilled pads of resistive material are formed along with the metrology structures to provide the sheet resistance of the pads prior to milling.

Abstract: Improved coils and clamps for variable reluctance sensors are disclosed. A method of fabricating a discrete coil involves providing a conductor wound in a coil on a tube. The coil has a coil outer surface that has insulation. A window is opened in the insulation on the coil outer surface to expose conductor of the coil for a contact. A movable core is provided within the tube for adjusting inductance of the coil. In one embodiment, the coil and tube are diced into small coils after the windows for each coil are opened. Another aspect the invention is a clamp comprising an elastic material, a shape memory alloy, and an apparatus for activating the shape memory alloy. The clamp holds the moveable core in its peak position. When the alloy is activated it changes shape and provides a force on the elastic material to change clamping state for resetting the transducer. Abstract: A portable alignment system for aligning the front and rear wheels of a motorcycle has a rear wheel assembly including rigid, longitudinally extending, first and second alignment members and a front wheel assembly including rigid, longitudinally extending, third and fourth alignment members. First and second laser units are removably mounted to the first and second alignment members, respectively. At least one measuring indicia is removably mounted to each of the third and fourth alignment members. Rear and front clamping subsystems removably clamp the first and second alignment members on either side of the rear wheel and the third and fourth alignment members on either side of the front wheel during the alignment procedure. The first and second laser units emit laser beams onto the measuring indicia mounted to the third and fourth alignment members, respectively, to provide an objective indication of the degree of alignment of the front and rear wheels.

A template is also defined which is a flexible substrate, such as paperboard, on which images of the tools are printed. A user may create the tools by cutting them out of the paperboard with ordinary scissors or by separating lines of weakness provided in the substrate. The tools are useful in measuring an angle between two pipes and marking the angle on a part of a selectable angle pipe elbow. The template is inexpensive to produce and can, therefore, be provided to purchasers of selectable angle pipe elbows at little or no charge to the purchaser.

Abstract: A spacing device having a length of uniformly stretchable elastic cord pre-marked with equally spaced marks in a manner such that when the cord is stretched across a given span to be divided into equal spaces, the distance between any two marks will be equal to the distance between each of the marks on the cord within the span, thereby providing a quick reference of one or more equally spaced points within a given span. In one embodiment the elastic cord is wound about a reel, and in another embodiment, the cord may be dispensed from the reel. To divide a span equally by a given number of spaces, the elastic cord is adjusted elastically to provide the location of one or more of the points. To locate equally spaced points along a line, the elastic cord is adjusted elastically to provide the desired spacing and the location of those points.

Abstract: A measurement device for locating positions and creating layouts on a surface. An upper section is rotatably attached to a base. The upper section has a first releasable fastener to hold an end of a measuring tape. The releasable fastener lies at a known distance along a radius from the point of rotation for the upper section. Optional second and third fasteners on the upper section permit the end of a measuring tape having a reel to be placed in second and third fasteners; the other end of the measuring tape runs through the first releasable fastener. Attached to the base is a device which indicates on a surface upon which a measurement is to be made the projection of the point of rotation of the upper section. The base can be fastened either to the surface or to a tripod, in case the surface is not level. For accommodating less pronounced variations in the surface, an extension tube is inserted on the base rotatably to hold the upper section.
