Abstract: Circuitry to remove switches from signal paths in integrated circuit programmable gain attenuators. Programmable gain attenuators and programmable gain amplifiers commonly switch between signal levels using semi-conductor switches. Such switches may introduce non-linearities in the signal. By isolating the switches from the signal path linearity of the PGA can be improved.

Abstract: A tunable element in the microwave frequency range is described that may include one or more tunable elements that are directly digitally controlled by a digital bus connecting a digital control circuit to each controlled element. In particular, each digital signal is filtered by a digital isolation technique so that the signal reaches the tunable elements with very low noise. The low noise digital signals are then converted to analog control voltages. The direct D/A conversion is accomplished by a special D/A converter which is manufactured as an integral part of a substrate. This D/A converter in accordance with the invention may consist of a resistor ladder or a directly digitally controlled capacitor. The direct digitally controlled capacitor may be a cantilevered type capacitor having multiple separate electrodes or sub-plates representing binary bits that may be used to control the capacitor.

Abstract: An RF circuit configured to inteface a balanced port (1, 2, 11, 12) with an unbalanced port (4, 14) by emulating the function of a balun. Reactive components (20, 30, 120, 130) in both branches of a balanced circuit form two resonant circuits by resonating with parasitic reactance. At a predetermined operating centre frequency, one of the two resonant circuits is above resonance and the other is below resonance, resulting in a 180° phase difference between the signals delivered by the two branches. When used to interface an unbalanced signal source (10) to a balanced load (40), the input impedance may be set to a real value matching the output impedance of the signal source by selection of the reactive component (20, 30) values.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed by which a base transceiver station (BTS) may be uniquely identified. When attempting to determine the location of a mobile unit using signal from multiple BTSs, it is critical that the BTSs be uniquely identified and their position accurately determined. In many cases, the signals received from the BTSs provide limited identification information and cannot be used to uniquely to identify the BTS from which a signal has been received. The present invention uses available information to generate a candidate list and to determine therefrom the most likely candidates for the Measurement BTSs. Based on this information, the system analyzes cell coverage overlap and relative phase delay to determine the likelihood of a candidate BTS being the actual BTS from which a signal is received. As candidate BTSs are uniquely identified, it is possible to use this additional identification information in an iterative process to further identify additional candidate BTSs.

Information throughput adaptation (ITA) is employed on the SATCOM link to maximize information throughput over the SATCOM link while ensuring acceptable signal quality under varying rain fading conditions. Sufficient power margin is built into the SATCOM link such that, under severe rain fading conditions, the lowest system throughput rate still provides acceptable signal quality. Under lesser rain fading conditions, the data throughput rate is increased via more bandwidth efficient modulation and coding schemes permitted by the higher signal quality which results from greater power margin. The earth station hub and remote terminals monitor the signal quality and communicate to adaptively adjust the modulation and coding used on the forward and return links to maximize information throughput under varying rain fading conditions.

The mobile station registers with the new MSC when the mobile station is in an active data call, but not in an active voice call. The method momentarily sends the data session to dormant mode while the mobile station performs location updating. The method utilizes a new information element in a Clear Command message that allows the MSC to indicate to the Base Station Controller (112) that the period a data session must remain dormant should be very brief. This brief period of time limits the impact on the MS user.

Abstract: There is provided a method for performing an intra-packet data service node (PDSN) soft handoff. The method is implemented by setting up a channel passing through a target base station controller (T-BSC), a source base station controller (S-BSC) and a PDSN by establishing a direct channel link between the S-BSC and the T-BSC in an active packet session mode, performing a handoff between the S-BSC, the T-BSC and a mobile station (MS), transmitting or receiving user packet data exchanged between the MS, and the S-BSC and the T-BSC to or from the PDSN through the established channel link and sending or receiving user packet data exchanged between the MS and the T-BSC to or from the PDSN through the established channel link when the handoff is completed.

The method is implemented by setting up a channel passing through a target base station controller (T-BSC), a source base station controller (S-BSC), a source packet control function (S-PCF) and a PDSN by establishing a channel link between the S-BSC and the T-BSC via a mobile station center (MSC) in an active packet session mode, performing the hard handoff between the S-BSC, the T-BSC and a mobile station (MS) and transmitting or receiving user packet data exchanged between the MS and the T-BSC through the established channel link to or from the PDSN in case the hard handoff is completed.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for adjusting the transmission power of base stations in simultaneous communication with a mobile station. The methods described provide for the transmission power of the base stations to be aligned. In the first exemplary embodiment, the transmitters are attached to a separate control unit through communication links. The control unit then derives the most likely command stream and send that to the base stations. In the second exemplary embodiment, the control unit periodically receives the final or average transmit level in a period and an aggregate quality measure for the feedback during a period from each of the transmitters. The control unit determines the aligned power level and transmits a message indicative of the aligned power level to the transmitters. In the third exemplary embodiment, the transmitters send the control unit a message indicative of the transmit power of transmissions to the receiver.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for delivering an incoming data call from a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to a Mobile Station (MS). A Mobile Switching Center (MSC) first receives an incoming call and initiates a call setup procedure with an Interworking Function (IWF). The IWF adapts the data call for a cellular network and completes the call setup procedure with the MSC. The MSC then initiates a connection with a Base Station Controller (BSC) currently serving the MS. After the connection is completed, the PSTN is informed and data transfer with the MS can is initiated.

Abstract: Transmitting non-polluting dummy pilot signals in a wireless communication network permits estimation of the downlink propagation channels between a number of joint transmitters and a lesser number of receivers. With fewer receivers than transmitters, loop back information from the receivers is not sufficient to determine the downlink propagation channels between the transmitters and receivers. For N transmitters and M receivers, (N-M) dummy pilot symbols are transmitted to facilitate downlink channel estimation. Each dummy pilot signal is transmitted to an imagined or dummy receiver that is virtually located such that its downlink channel coefficient vector is orthogonal to those of the real receivers. Transmit pre-filtering based on estimated propagation channels is applied to the information signals for the real receivers and to the dummy pilot signals. The extent to which the dummy pilot signals interfere at each receiver is an indication of mismatch between estimated and actual propagation channels.

Abstract: A navigation assistance system provides navigational guidance to a user of a mobile appliance equipped with a radio transceiver. The user can specify a destination address either directly or categorically and select from any choices to resolve ambiguity. The user submits the selected destination to a fixed radio system such as a cellular telephony system which estimates the user position, determines the relative location of the destination and sends to the user appliance data which allows the display of approximate range and bearing to the destination. The mobile appliance can be equipped with a compass which can be electronic and which allows a user to be shown the direction of travel in order to reach the destination.

Determining the lower bound of an excess delay in a time of arrival measurements includes receiving signals from at least two base stations and determining the time difference of arrival between the received signals from their respective base stations. Then estimating a lower bound of excess delay introduced into the signals received from the base stations based on the time of arrival of the signals from the respective base stations and a known distance between the base stations. The system (100) determines whether the mobile station (102) is located within a checkpoint area (130). If so, the system (100) then compares a mobile station position of the mobile station (102) within the checkpoint area (130) and a checkpoint position (128) corresponding to the checkpoint area (130) to generate a result. The system (100) thereafter determines whether the result exceeds a predetermined error tolerance.
