Abstract: A process is described for the decomposition of N2O during nitric acid production by bringing the N2O-containg waste gas leaving the absorption column into contact with a catalyst which comprises at least one oxidic cobalt compound and at least one oxidic magnesium compound, under conditions which permit conversion of N2O to gaseous nitrogen and oxygen. The content of oxidic cobalt compounds is in the range from 0.1 to 50% by weight and the content of oxidic magnesium compounds is in the range from 50 to 99.9% by weight, based in each case on the total weight of the catalyst, and at least 30% of the Co atoms present in the catalyst are present in the trivalent state. The preparation of the catalyst involves dry mixing of the oxidic cobalt compounds and the oxidic magnesium compounds or of appropriate precursors which are converted into the oxidic compounds by heat treatment, and compacting the mix, with exclusion of water, so that the resultant catalyst has the desired envelope density.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a family of cyclic peptide monomers and supramolecular cyclic peptide structures comprising chromophore residues which possess electronic and electro-optic properties for producing molecular scale electronic and photonic devices made from such materials. More particularly, this invention provides for cyclic peptide nanotube structures formed from a plurality of stacked cyclic peptides comprising chromophore residues that provide molecular scale electronic conductivity and non linear optical behavior.

Abstract: Novel backbone cyclized peptide analogs are formed by means of bridging groups attached via the alpha nitrogens of amino acid derivatives to provide novel non-peptidic linkages. Novel building units disclosed are N&agr;(&ohgr;-functionalized) amino acids constructed to include a spacer and a terminal functional group. One or more of these N&agr;(&ohgr;-functionalized) amino acids are incorporated into a peptide sequence, preferably during solid phase peptide synthesis. The reactive terminal functional groups are protected by specific protecting groups that can be selectively removed to effect either backbone-to-backbone or backbone-to-side chain cyclizations. The invention is specifically exemplified by backbone cyclized bradykinin antagonists having biological activity. Further embodiments of the invention are somatostatin analogs having one or two ring structures involving backbone cyclization.

Abstract: More than 30% of human malignancies harbor encogenic Ras. Both pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic pathways emanate from encogenic Ras with survival being dominant. Ras survival signaling is thought to be controlled by transcriptional and post-translational processes. The present invention shows that a repressor of cap-dependent translation initiation, 4E-BP1, selectively activates apoptosis in Ras-transformed fibroblasts and eliminates Ras-induced chemoresistance. These effects of 4E-BP1 are strictly dependent on its ability to sequester translation initiation factor eIF4E, thereby preventing its assembly into an active pre-initiation complex. These results suggest that translational control is critical for prevention of apoptosis and resistance to antitumor agents in Ras-transformed cells.
