Abstract: An Electromagnetic Field Communications System for Wireless Networks for producing an electromagnetic field within a structure is disclosed. The electromagnetic field is produced by using common conductive elements already present within virtually all pre-existing residential commercial, industrial buildings. These conductors, which may include electrical ground shields, wiring, pipes, sprinkler conduits or structural members, are excited with a signal, and become the cavity which contains the electromagnetic field. In preferred embodiments of the invention, signals are generated using the High Frequency, Very High Frequency and lower UHF bands (3 to 30, 30 to 300 and up to 400 MHz). The invention may be used to create a local area network inside the field and within the structure. Devices that include receivers tuned to the electromagnetic field may then be connected and networked.

The set-top terminal is arranged to communicate with a headend controller over a bi-directional communication link having both upstream and downstream communication paths. A configuration change is implemented in response to an unsolicited message that is generated by the set-top terminal and received by the headend controller over the upstream communications path. The configuration change is implemented at the headend, or at the set-top terminal by downloading configuration data from the headend controller over the downstream communication path. Abstract: Techniques to acquire the frequency of a signal instance based on a window of data samples covering a time period shorter than the time needed to achieve frequency lock. The window of data samples is initially captured and stored to a sample buffer. A segment of data samples is then retrieved from the sample buffer for processing. The retrieved data samples are rotated by a current frequency error estimate to provide frequency-translated data samples, which are further processed to provide one or more pilot symbols. An updated frequency error estimate for the frequency-translated data samples is then derived based on the pilot symbols using a frequency control loop. The window of data samples is processed for a number of iterations until frequency acquisition is achieved for the signal instance or termination is reached. For each iteration, one segment is processed at a time and typically in sequential order.

Abstract: When the user is actively transmitting/receiving or has recently transmitted/received on the RF channel, the user is referred to as being in an “active” state. Typically, if the user is in the active state, and neither sends nor receives data for a timer period greater than a threshold, then the user is transitioned off of the RF channel (e.g. transitioned from active to dormant). Once a transition to the dormant state has occurred, the continued transmission or re-transmission of data over an RF channel can result in a delay in re-accessing the RF channel. In order to address this problem, the idle-timer threshold is dynamically adjusted based on a communication system statistic to increase system performance.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for allocating charges that accrue to download content to a mobile station from a data source, either a third-party data source or a system-operator data source. An SMS message is generated at an SMS center that includes an identification of the type of data source that is to originate the data. A detector at the mobile station detects the SMS message and the identification of the type of data source at which the content is to be originated. A table is accessed, and a calling number associated with the data source is retrieved therefrom. A terminal management session is thereafter formed utilizing the retrieved calling number. The calling number forms either a toll number or a toll-free number and is determinative of to where charges shall be allocated to download the content.

Abstract: A system for providing alternative billing and service authorization for pre-paid wireless calls segments call flow to supporting subsystems and limits trunk usage exclusively to short pre- and post-call announcements. An Integrated Services Digital Network User Part (ISUP) Application, hosted by an SS7 Service Switching Point, keeps call state information, implements call-flow capabilities, and accesses resources for messaging. An Intelligent Peripheral (IP) provides an Interactive Voice Response Unit. A Responder serves as an interface to a database of pre-paid plan subscriber information, rates calls, and defines messages to be voiced by the IP. A Call Controller manages call context data for use by the Responder and conveys script information from the Responder to the IP. SS7 ISUP signaling enables out-of-band signaling between a carrier's MSC and the ISUP Application.

Abstract: A system and method of providing a user with an alert, such as a visual or audible alert that one or more email messages have been received at a designated email account. The system and method operates by intermittently querying the status of the account at the server where the account is held over an on-line network. Upon receiving a positive indication that email has been received, an alert message is sent to a pre-determined location via the telephone network. The alert may be sent to a visual display of a dedicated email alert device, or may be sent to an existing phone such that a short ring acts as the alert.

A media file storage stores media files created in arbitrary format for filing moving images. A storage stores codec information on voice/image data and the media files as intermediate formatted data. A media file controller multiplexes the intermediate formatted data to generate a bit stream of voice/image data based on the codec information on the voice/image data. The interface converter transmits the bit stream of voice/image data to a TV cellular phone.

Abstract: Techniques for synchronization of stored service parameters are disclosed. In one aspect, a configuration identifier is transmitted from a mobile station to a base station, and compared with an identifier generated in the base station. If the identifiers match, the configuration is used for communication. In another aspect, the identifier is generated by selecting an identifier associated with a configuration from a configuration table. In yet another aspect, the identifier is generated by computing a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) of the configuration. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of preventing attempted use of unsynchronized stored service parameters and associated call setup failures and subsequent renegotiation, with the net effect of reducing call setup time and more efficient use of system resources.

The user of the wireless device must then affirmatively interact with the interactive screen in order to access or download a software application or data from the network server. The interactive screen can be transmitted from the network server where the wireless device seeks to access or download an application or data, or can be transmitted from a separate server to the wireless device. The records of the wireless device-server interactions can be stored on a network server or other data stores on the wireless network.

Abstract: A system and method for selectively updating the versions of stored datasets on a wireless device that selectively communicates to a wireless network and downloads datasets, such as software applications and information, from download servers on the wireless network. The wireless device has a resident dataset version summary file that identifies the version of each resident dataset, and upon the wireless device attempting to communicate with the download server, the wireless device compares the version of each specific resident dataset listed in the resident dataset version summary file with the version of downloadable datasets resident on the download server to thereby determine if the version of a wireless device resident dataset is different from the version of a download server resident dataset. If the download server resident dataset is more recent, the wireless device can download it to overwrite the wireless device resident dataset.
