Abstract: According to the invention a silencer for a firearm is arranged so that emitted gas, caught from the muzzle of the firearm after a shot, can both be caught and flow rearwards in the silencer after having been caught. This is accomplished in the way that the silencer comprises several separate chambers (1-5) extending longitudinally in the silencer. When the silencer is fitted to the firearm, there will be at least one chamber (1, 2) on either side of the muzzle of the weapon. The emitted gas is caught by holes (6) formed in a boundary surface between the chambers (1, 3, 4) in front of the muzzle and a central bore (16) through the silencer. The holes (6) extend radially through this boundary surface towards the bore (16) and are placed in rows which are spaced so that the holes (6) of each row will merge on the inside of the boundary surface towards the bore (16).

Abstract: Cylinder deactivation apparatus includes switching valve actuators controlled by rotary valve sleeves surrounding each of the actuators. In a preferred embodiment, the sleeves act to admit continuous pressurized oil to internal lash adjuster mechanisms and selectively control oil flow from a lash adjuster mechanism inlet to a deactivator switching mechanism and discharge of pressure oil from the deactivator switching mechanism. A single oil supply provides pressurized oil to both conventional and deactivation valve actuators for lubrication of associated valve mechanisms and operation of internal lash adjusters as well as for operation of the cylinder deactivation mechanisms. In a valve-actuating position, the rotary sleeve drains oil from the deactivating mechanism so that associated engine valves are operated normally.

Abstract: A fluid-actuated cylinder includes a piston rod with a circumferential groove. A split ring, with predetermined linear expansion properties, is cooled to a temperature below the temperature of the rod, and the ring halves are located in the groove. The ring is then equalized with the temperature of the rod, and expands into compression against the sidewalls of the groove. An interference fit is provided with the groove, which prevents axial and rotational movement of the ring with respect to the piston rod. The expansion also prestresses the piston rod between the groove sidewalls. The split ring is then connected to an annular flange on a ring-shaped piston to fix the piston with respect to the piston rod. The piston rod assembly is then located in a cylinder housing, with the piston providing a fluid seal with the cylinder walls as the piston rod reciprocates.

Abstract: An apparatus and method of removing a selected component from a stream of fluid containing a plurality of components is provided. The stream is induced to flow at supersonic velocity through a conduit so as to decrease the temperature of the fluid to below a selected temperature at which one of condensation and solidification of the selected component occurs, thereby forming particles of the selected component. The conduit is provided with a structure for imparting a swirling motion to the stream of fluid thereby inducing the particles to flow to a radially outer section of a collecting zone in the stream. A shock wave is created in the stream so as to decrease the axial velocity of the fluid to subsonic velocity, and to increase the swirling motion of the particles which are extracted into an outlet stream from the radially outer section of the collecting zone downstream of the shock wave.

Abstract: A device for absorbing atmospheric moisture includes a support member with a net extending therefrom. The net includes a super absorbent polymer that has the property of being able to absorb a multiple of the polymer mass in atmospheric water and to thereafter release the water in response to an external stimulus. The device is in this way reusable. The device has particular application in the clearing of fog, manure odor clearance, and collection of potable water in remote locations. A process for extracting atmospheric moisture is also detailed that includes the step of extending a super absorbent polymer net into contact with an atmosphere. Thereafter, with that being in contact with the atmosphere for a sufficient amount of time moisture is absorbed from the atmosphere. The application of a stimulus to the super absorbent polymer containing atmospheric moisture causes the release of liquid water therefrom. The super absorbent polymer is then suitable for reuse to again absorb atmospheric water.

Abstract: A spin-stabilized projectile has a projectile body and a guide band being circumferentially mounted on an outer face of the projectile body. The guide band includes a plurality of axially adjoining partial guide bands. One of the partial guide bands is a first partial guide band made of copper, a copper alloy or another soft metal. One of the partial guide bands is a second partial guide band made of soft iron and axially adjoining the first partial guide band. A total axial length of all second partial guide bands is between 5% and 50% of the total axial length of the guide band.

Abstract: A component of a safety system in motor vehicles comprises a core which has end and side faces and is made of an explosive material. The component further comprises a jacket made of a solid semiconductor material that surrounds the explosive material on the side faces of the core, and an ignition element situated between electric contact surfaces on one of the end faces of the core. The ignition element initiates an ignition of the explosive material when current flows through it. The explosive material consists of a porous fuel and of an oxidizer incorporated into the porous fuel. The porous fuel and the solid semiconductor are made of the same material.

Abstract: A traveling highline aerial cable rail system for moving objects over large distances in three-dimensional space. A pair of track dollies mounted beneath substantially parallel and distantly separated support trusses allow the entire load bearing highline itself to traverse X-axis space. The highline defines the Y-axis of the system and supports a skate that moves along this axis. A platform suspended from the skate moves vertically in the Z-axis and can support extremely heavy loads depending on the gauge of the rope used in the system. A three motor pulley system with a multiplicity of sheaves allow independent movement of all three axes. The system can move objects weighing thousands of pounds stably at 60 miles per hour or more through three-dimensional space. The system can be modularly widened along the X-axis by adding truss sections, and the highline can be configured to up to 1000 feet or more, using rope that can support several tons or more.

Abstract: A conveyance storage apparatus includes an annular turntable having an outer circumference and a central opening defining a support surface therebetween for supporting a plurality of conveyances, particularly aircraft, on parking spaces thereon. The turntable is supported on a foundation, and a rotation assembly is positioned between the turntable and the foundation for permitting rotation of the turntable on the foundation between storage and enter/exit positions. A stationary core is positioned within the central opening of the turntable and the turntable is mounted for rotation around the stationary core. The turntable can be positioned within an enclosure having an opening sized to permit only a single conveyance to enter or exit the enclosure at a time. The rotation assembly is electronically programmable to respond to a predetermined access code by moving a predetermined parking space to a conveyance entrance/exit position in relation to the enclosure opening.

Abstract: The invention relates to a coating composition comprising (i) a supporting medium, and (ii) a plurality of cellulose particles, having an average dry particle size of less than 10 &mgr;m, dispersed in the supporting medium, excluding aqueous coating compositions adapted for application to paper. The invention also relates to a coating composition comprising (i) a supporting medium, and (ii) a plurality of cellulose particles, having an average dry particle size of less than 10 &mgr;m, dispersed in the supporting medium in an amount of less than about 5 g/L. The coating compositions of the invention form coatings which have useful thermal properties.

Abstract: An articulating table can be easily adjusted by meeting participants, thereby suiting a wide range of meeting conditions without lifting, carrying or requiring specialized help. Rollers and/or electric motors make this transition easy. The articulating table includes two or more leaves coupled to each other by a large horizontal pivot. These leaves can be moved to different angles relative to each other, allowing for changes in configuration and capacity. The articulation can be accomplished using a rule joint, wherein the pivoting members are attached with offsets allowing the leaves to be placed in the same plane. The rule joint is divided into two or more parts, each attached to a leaf. These pivot parts are circular and have either a protrusion or depression concentric to their center, which fits into a corresponding part on the other member. This male/female arrangement provides a bearing surface and maintains alignment as the leaves pivot.
