  • Patent number: 6644030
Abstract: Cooling systems and methods for cooling heat-generating equipment, such as steam driven turbines, can operate in multiple modes including a closed loop mode, an open loop mode and a helper mode. During normal operation in the closed loop mode, cooling water may be circulated in a closed cooling system through an integrated cooling tower, without drawing from or discharging into a water source, thereby minimizing the effect of the cooling system on the water source. In open loop operation, water can be drawn from a water source to cool the equipment without the use of the cooling tower and can then be discharged. The open loop mode can be advantageous when the cooling tower may be out of service. In the helper mode, cooling water drawn from a source cools the equipment and may then be partially or fully circulated through the cooling tower prior to discharge.

  • Patent number: 6644031
Abstract: A fuel injector has a metering valve arranged to open under a predetermined feed pressure which constitutes a first threshold pressure, and to remain open in response to said feed pressure increasing so as to deliver fuel to fuel utilization means. The flow rate of fuel passing through the injector is metered to feed said utilization means so long as the feed pressure remains below a second threshold pressure greater than the first threshold pressure. Above the second threshold pressure, the metering valve behaves like a fixed diaphragm as a function of the fluid flow sections formed therethrough. Individual adjustment means are provided so as to enable said second threshold pressure to be adjusted for each injector to ensure that fuel is injected at a uniform flow rate by all of the injectors in a combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 6644036
Abstract: The invention relates to a novel cooling system (100) in which waste heat to be dissipated is first absorbed by an electron emission layer (15). The heat induces a discharge of electrons (13) from the surface of the electron emission layer, whereby the electrons are drawn off by a suction electrode (10) which is located on a positive potential located opposite the emission layer (15). The thermal energy carried along by the electrons (13) induce a heat transfer from the electron emission layer (15) to the suction electrode (10). The intensity of the electron flow can be controlled by the bias voltage of a grid (12) which is arranged between the electron emission layer (15) and the suction electrode (10). The surface of the electron emission layer (15) is preferably composed of alkaline earth metals such as barium or cesium.

  • Patent number: 6644049
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a space conditioning system having multi-stage cooling and dehumidification capability is provided. The system includes plural refrigeration circuits operable in a cooling mode to provide cooled air to an indoor space. At least one of the refrigeration circuits is also operable in a reheat mode, wherein air is dehumidified by cooling it and then reheating it before it is supplied to the space. A control system is provided for controlling the operation of the refrigeration circuits to satisfy both a demand for cooling and a demand for dehumidification. Depending upon the level of demand for cooling, the system is operated to satisfy the dehumidification demand and the cooling demand simultaneously. However, in response to a higher level of demand for cooling (e.g., a second stage demand, or in some cases, a higher demand), the demand for cooling takes priority over the dehumidification demand.

Abstract: An air conditioning system (multi-air conditioner system) which has a plurality of indoor units installed inside of a predefined space for performing air conditioning and an outdoor unit installed outside of the space for controlling the indoor units, and a method for controlling the same. In an installation process, an installer need not personally set addresses in the indoor units one by one, because the outdoor unit automatically sets the addresses in the indoor units. Therefore, as compared with conventional air conditioning systems, a period of time required for the address setting and an error occurrence probability can be reduced and the convenience to the user can be increased. Furthermore, the address setting can automatically be conducted without additionally using separate hardware modules, thereby reducing parts costs required in manufacturing a multi-air conditioner.

  • Patent number: 6644066
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed to relieve liquid pressure from a receiver to a condenser in a cooling system that operates under a variety of ambient temperature conditions. To relieve excess pressure in the receiver and to prevent the venting of refrigerant through a relief valve, a pressure-balancing system is connected between the condenser and the receiver of the cooling system. In one embodiment, the pressure-balancing system includes a check valve and a pressure-balancing valve. The pressure-balancing valve bypasses the check valve. The check valve permits the flow of refrigerant in one direction from the condenser to the receiver. The pressure-balancing valve permits the flow of refrigerant in an opposite direction from the receiver to the condenser in order to maintain the pressure in the receiver below a maximum pressure level. The pressure-balancing valve may be installed on a bypass line parallel to the check valve.

  • Patent number: 6644067
Abstract: A closed circuit refrigeration system of successive coalescent/depth filters provides the almost total removal of liquid refrigerants from a refrigeration gas stream. The liquid refrigerant so extracted is then be returned to the suction side through a metering device such as a capillary line to provide intermediate cooling of the oncoming discharge gas. The auto cascade system utilizes short path plate heat exchangers. The properties of coalescent/depth filters place a physical barrier between the differing temperature/pressure regimes on the discharge side of the system. The provision of a start valve in a line connecting the gas discharge path and the return path close to the cryo-coil enables the use of hermetic compressors and eliminates the requirement for supplementary pressure vessels within auto-cascade cryogenic refrigeration systems.

Abstract: A refrigeration system comprises a compressor for increasing a temperature and a pressure of a refrigerant vapor, a condenser fluidly coupled to the compressor for condensing the refrigerant vapor, an expansion device for decreasing the temperature and pressure of a refrigerant liquid, and an evaporator fluidly coupled to the expansion device for evaporating the refrigerant liquid by transferring thermal energy between the refrigerant liquid and a second fluid. The refrigeration system also comprises a heat exchanger having a first flow path fluidly coupled to the compressor and the evaporator and a second flow path fluidly coupled to the condenser and the expansion valve. The heat exchanger is adapted to superheat the refrigerant vapor in the first flow path and subcool the refrigerant liquid in the second flow path by transferring thermal energy between the refrigerant in the first and second flow paths.

Abstract: A three-dimensional knit fabric having front and back knit layers and a monofilament yarn connecting the knit layers to each other, characterized in that the curvature of the monofilament yarn in the three-dimensional knit fabric is in a range from 0.01 to 1.6, and the bending elongation of the monofilament is 20% or less when the three-dimensional knit fabric is compressed to 50%. The three-dimensional knit fabric has a cushioning property in springiness which does not deteriorate even if the fabric is repeatedly used many times or for a long time, and thus this fabric is excellent in terms of durability of the cushioning property. In particular, the fabric is suitable for use as a hammock type seat and exhibits a cushioning property having a favorable springy feeling as well as a good fit feel.
