Abstract: A carbamate or terminal urea functional vinyl polymer is prepared by reacting a compound having an hydroxyl group and a carbamate group, terminal urea group, or a group that can be converted to a carbamate or terminal urea group, with a cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride group to form an ester bond and a free acid group from the anhydride; and reacting the free acid group with a compound having an epoxide group. The cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride group may be pendant to a vinyl polymer, or one of the compound having an hydroxyl group, a compound having the cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride group, and the compound having an epoxide group may have polymerizable ethylenic unsaturation that is polymerized, optionally with one or more copolymerizable monomers to form a vinyl polymer. When the compound having an hydroxyl group has a group that can be converted to a carbamate or terminal urea group, the group is converted to the carbamate or terminal urea group after step (a).

The production process for an irregular shape basic water-absorbent resin comprises the step of reacting a basic resin and a crosslinking agent in order to obtain the basic water-absorbent resin, with the process forwarding a crosslinking reaction and pulverizing the resultant product at the same time. The first production process for a water-absorbing agent comprises the step of blending an acidic water-absorbent resin with the basic water-absorbent resin obtained by the above-mentioned process.

In particular aspects, the compounds of the invention bind Factor VIIa (FVIIa ), its zymogen Factor VII (FVII). The invention also provides pharmaceutical compositions comprising the novel compounds as well as their use in diagnostic, therapeutic, and prophylactic methods.

Abstract: A series of genes from Neisseria meningitidis are shown to encode products which are implicated in virulence. The identification of these genes therefore allows attenuated microorganisms to be produced. Furthermore, the genes or their encoded products can be used in the manufacture of vaccines for therapeutic application.

Abstract: The invention concerns novel antimicrobial peptides of the family of defensins, in particular antifungal, called termicines, polynucleotides encoding said peptides, vectors containing them for transforming a host organism and the method for transforming said organism. The invention also concerns transformed organisms, in particular yeast producing termicine, or plant cells and plants, the termicines produced by the transformed plats providing them with resistence to fungus-mediated diseases. The invention further concerns the use of termicines as medicine and pharmaceutical compositions containing them.

Abstract: The invention relates to the surprising discovery that XAGE-1 is translated as two proteins, a 9 kD protein, termed p9, and a 16.3 kD protein, termed p16. The invention further relates to the surprising discovery that XAGE-1 is expressed in a number of important human cancers, specifically: prostate cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, glioblastoma, pancreatic cancer, T cell lymphoma, melanoma, and histocytic lymphoma. The proteins p9 and p16, immunogenic fragments thereof, analogs of these proteins, and nucleic acids encoding these proteins, fragments, or analogs, can be administered to persons with XAGE-1 expressing cancers to raise or augment an immune response to the cancer. The invention further provides nucleic add sequences encoding the proteins, as well as expression vectors, host cells, and antibodies to the proteins. Further, the invention provides immunoconjugates that comprise an antibody to p16 or to p9, and an effector molecule, such as a label, a radioisotope, or a toxin.
