Abstract: A string (12) of pocketed coil springs (14) is formed by inserting compressed springs between upper and lower plies of a folded, preferably thermally weldable fabric (16). The springs are maintaned in a compressed configuration while a longitudinal seam (54) joins the free edges of the thermally welded fabric (16) together. Subsequently, the compressed springs (14) are allowed to relax into an expanded configuration after which a transverse seam (80) is formed in the fabric (16) between the adjacent springs (14) thereby encapsulating each spring (14) within a fabric pocket (86). The string (12) of pocketed coil springs (14) is advantageously formed without the need for reorienting the springs (14) after being inserted between the plies (24,26) of the fabric (16) and thereby avoiding the disadvantages and complications associated with turning or reorienting the pocketed coil spring (14).

Abstract: A zero turning radius power lawn mower for operation by a standing occupant includes first and second independently driven and controlled rear drive wheels mounted on separate drive axles. A riding platform for supporting the standing occupant or operator is located between the first and second rear drive wheels. The rear drive wheels are independently driveable in both the forward and reverse directions at variable speeds so as to allow for substantially zero radius turning of the mower about a central turning point. The riding platform is positioned near this turning point or axis so that the standing occupant remains substantially unaffected by centrifugal force created during approximate zero radius is turning of the mower thereby allowing the mower to take such turns at higher speeds. The low center of gravity created by the position of the riding platform for the standing operator also results in the mower having improved traction and being less likely to pop “wheelies” upon acceleration.

Abstract: An exhaust passageway of an engine is provided with a NOx storage-reduction catalyst for trapping and storing NOx from an exhaust gas lean of a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. When the storage of the NOx in the catalyst becomes large, the engine is operated at a rich air-fuel ratio for a short time so that NOx is released from the catalyst and is removed by reduction. An electronic unit of the engine estimates the amount of storage of NOx in the catalyst through the use of NOx counters that are incremented at a predetermined rate during a lean air-fuel ratio operation of the engine, and that are decremented at a predetermined rate during a rich air-fuel ratio operation of the engine. Independent NOx counters are provided for at least two divided portions of the catalyst in a one-to-one correspondence.

In one position, most of the exhaust gasses go to a first catalyst, and the remaining exhaust gasses, along with injected reductant go to a second catalyst. In a second position, most of the exhaust gasses go to the second catalyst, and the remaining exhaust gasses, along with injected reductant go to the first catalyst. In this way, a reduced cost system is achieved.

Abstract: A filter (41) traps particulate matter contained in the exhaust gas of an engine (1). The filter (41) is regenerated by burning the trapped particulate matter by raising the temperature of the filter (41). When regeneration conditions are satisfied, a controller (31) raises the exhaust gas temperature to a first target exhaust gas temperature via an exhaust gas temperature adjusting mechanism (10) (S39), and burns the trapped particulate matter to regenerate the filter (41). When the engine (1) has rapidly decelerated during regeneration, the controller (31) decreases the exhaust gas temperature to a second target exhaust gas temperature lower than the first target exhaust gas temperature (S44, S45), and increases the exhaust gas flow rate (S52), thereby preventing the filter (41) from exceeding an upper limiting temperature.
