Patent number: 6877435Abstract: This invention relates to a gas generator having two or more compartments, each with a separate initiator, with one compartment discharging before another, i.e., the compartments discharge sequentially. Each compartment has the same propellants, but the propellants have different geometries in each compartment, which results in different rates of gas evolution from each compartment. The new gas generator is designed to reach maximum inflation at the same time as the current, single stage gas generators. However, the new generator has a more rapid initial inflation, followed by a more gradual inflation rate in the subsequent stages, improving safety to occupants. The propellant used in new generator comprises (1) ammonium nitrate as the oxidizer, which is less toxic and corrosive than the currently-used azide, (2) a fuel such as CL-20, and (3) a binder such as polycaprolactone. No hot metal particles (e.g., CuO) are generated in the new system.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2002Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Textron Systems CorporationInventor: Sami Daoud

Patent number: 6877444Abstract: A thermal decomposition system is disclosed which can decompose wastes thermally in a continuous manner and which is therefore superior in its working efficiency. In the thermal decomposition system, wherein wastes to be treated are charged into a crucible and the crucible is heated while holding the interior thereof in vacuum to decompose the wastes thermally, both ends of a rotary furnace are supported rotatably by a frame, and drive units for rotating the rotary furnace are provided. The crucible, which is cylindrical, is installed in a central axis direction of the rotary furnace and a spiral groove is formed axially in an inner wall of the crucible. A heating device for heating the interior of the crucible is installed within the rotary furnace. Both opening ends of the crucible are connected to a feed box and a discharge box, respectively, which are supported by the frame.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2001Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignees: Art Ceramic Co., Ltd., E.T.I. Patent number: 6877445Abstract: A chamber having a discharge base discharges an oversize fraction of a material and a fine fraction of the material separately from the chamber. The discharge base for the chamber for the heat treatment of the material is capable of separating the fine fraction of the material from the oversize fraction of the material. The discharge base has a plurality of conveyor elements which are movable to and fro for the discharge of the oversize fraction of the material. The discharge base is also provided with separator openings for separating out the fine fraction of the material. The conveyor elements are of bar-shape construction and are disposed in parallel to one another on the discharge base to be moveable in the direction of their longitudinal extent, and the separator openings are formed by longitudinal gaps between the conveyor elements.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2002Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Polysius AGInventors: Ludwig Könning, Thomas Rüther, Ralf Osburg, Ludger Brentrup, Holger Schmidthals, Martin Torner

Patent number: 6877446Abstract: Process for incinerating refuse derived fuels to obtain fuel gas therefrom by thermal cracking, comprising the following steps: subjecting the material to deaeration; advancing a bed of material within a vacuum environment insulated from the outside (thermal cracking chamber) and in which a temperature of between 400 DEG C. and 600 DEG C. is maintained by the countercurrent flow of hot gases which lap the material; feeding the material which has passed through the thermal cracking chamber to a reactor in order to be subjected to a temperature of between 1200 DEG C. and 1800 DEG C.; in proximity ot the entry end of said thermal cracking chamber, drawing off the gases generated by the thermal cracking together with the gases which have lapped the bed of material, in order to maintain the thermal cracking chamber under vacuum; feeding the drawn-off gases to the discharge conduit for the gases generated in the reactor; purifying and filtering the gases obtained in this manner for their use as fuel gases.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2001Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: RE.D.E.
