Abstract: A metal brush useful in pipeline pigs, for example, in magnetic flux leakage tools or cleaning tools, a method of making the brush and pipeline pig comprising the brush. The brush has a metal bristle holder and a plurality of metal bristles, the ends of which are held in the bristle holder by being welded to each other and to the bristle holder by fusion welding. The bristle holder may be a tube, or a large metal structure with a hole or cavity. In one embodiment, the brush has a flat bottom surface, and is therefore particularly useful in MFL tools. The brush is not made with solder and therefore avoids many of the problems associated with using solder in pipeline applications, for both MFL and other pipeline applications.

Abstract: The structure of the present invention provides pivotable coupling of a head to a handle. The head may assume various pitch angles relative to the handle. Once place at a particular pitch angle the head is releasably fixed-in-place and opposes pitching of the head relative to the handle to assume a new pitch angle. With the application of sufficient force on the head, the head is released from the fixed-in-place pitch angle and a new pitch angle is achieved.

Abstract: Small sheet metal reinforcement pieces are co-formed with a larger sheet metal part during a hot stretch forming against a heated forming tool surface. Locator holes are made in blanks for the reinforcing pieces so they can be precisely located on locator pins in the forming surface where the reinforcing pieces are ultimately to be attached to the formed sheet part. A preheated blank of the larger part is stretched against the trapped reinforcement blanks and both the part and reinforcing pieces are shaped against the hot tool. The part and reinforcing pieces are removed and cooled, and the closely fitting reinforcing pieces attached to the part at a suitable later time.

Abstract: A plurality of staking die sets is provided, each adapted to crimp an iron fence rail onto a picket where the latter passes through an aperture in the former. Each die set comprises a staking die matching the cross sectional shape of the picket and adapted to embrace one half of the picket on one side of the rail. A corresponding anvil die opposes the staking die on the opposite side of the rail. Mechanically leveraged, powered jaws force the staking die toward the anvil and against the rail to squeeze the rail in the immediate vicinity of the picket, causing rail metal around the aperture to flow toward the picket, reducing the aperture until the picket becomes immobilized. A plurality of such jaws and dies, adjustably arrayed at selected spacings and coupled to a common power source, allows a single staking operation to affix simultaneously all pickets in a given length of rail.

Abstract: A process and apparatus for continuously forming and coating a tube with a braze alloy. The apparatus includes a device for continuously delivering tubing material to a device that forms a continuous tube from the tubing material, a device for preheating the tube, a device for depositing the braze alloy on the tube, a device for cooling the tube and the braze alloy layer before the surface of the braze alloy layer oxidizes, and optionally a device for sizing the tube. The deposition device includes an enclosure and at least one thermal spray gun that receives a metallic material from the source, heats the metallic material, and deposits the metallic material through an inert gas to form a layer of the braze alloy on the surface of the tube as the tube continuously travels through the enclosure.

Abstract: A method for assembling a head-drum assembly for a magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus is provided. The head-drum assembly is assembled by inserting a shaft to a fixed drum first, setting up a motor stator in the fixed drum, and putting a rotary drum assembly and drum cover assembly into the shaft sequentially. The method can reduce the number of part to be abandoned due to a defect caused in the assembly process by performing a process of assembling the shaft and the fixed drum first, an area in which most defects are caused, and then proceeding to the subsequent assembly processes.

Abstract: A method is provided for preserving the transverse biasing of a GMR (or MR) read head during back-end processing. In a first preferred embodiment, the method comprises magnetizing the longitudinal biasing layers of the read head in a transverse direction, so that the resulting field at the position of the transverse biasing layer places it in a minimum of potential energy which stabilizes its direction. The field of the longitudinal biasing layer is then reset to the longitudinal direction in a manner which maintains the transverse biasing direction. In a second embodiment, a novel fixture for mounting the read head during processing includes a magnetic portion which stabilizes the transverse bias of the read head. The two methods may be used singly or in combination.

Abstract: A voice coil and actuator yoke assembly is fabricated by deforming the coil to exactly fit the inner perimeter and thickness of the yoke. The comb is placed in a tool that registers the comb with the yoke against the same flat surfaces that will squash the coil. The tooling is closed and placed in an appropriate loading device and the coils are squashed to the precise thickness of the yoke. This eliminates the in-plane tolerances of the current process for bonding a coil into the yoke. The coil perimeter expands as the coil is squashed to form an intimate press fit with the yoke. A low viscosity, high Tg adhesive is then applied to the coil. The low viscosity of the adhesive allows capillary action to fill the voids between the wires and bond the coil to the yoke.

A component supplied at a component supply is picked up by a transport head at the pickup station and then transferred to a placement head at the transfer station. The placement head carries the component to the placement station where the component is placed and mounted onto a substrate such as a circuit board. The component, when held by the placement head, is recognized by an imaging device at or in the vicinity of the transfer station.

Abstract: This invention relates to circuit boards and methods of fabricating circuit boards. A circuit board includes a core layer and a surface layer. The core layer includes a number of fibers and the surface layer has a thickness that is between about 10% and about 30% of the circuit board thickness. Including fibers in the core layer increases the strength of the circuit board. The surface layer is essentially free of fibers and relatively thick. The thickness of the surface layer inhibits the formation of cracks in the circuit board, which improves the reliability of circuits and systems coupled to the circuit board.

Abstract: A method is provided for efficiently manufacturing a high quality internal combustion engine piston having an annular cavity allowing for good circulation of cooling fluid. An annular groove is formed at the circumferential edge of the top face of a piston crown, or at the top of the exterior circumferential face of the crown, and an annular protruding strip is formed as a continuation of an edge of the opening of the annular groove. The protruding strip is bent in the direction of the opening of the annular groove by bringing to bear a pressure roller 11, while rotating the main piston body. Consequently, the opening of the annular groove is closed, whereby an annular cavity for circulating cooling fluid is formed so as to surround a pressure receiving recess.

The tool has a triangular main body having at least one structural feature that defines a plane. At least one flange is connected to the main body, is oriented substantially perpendicular to the main body plane, and forms the first side of the triangle.
