  • Patent number: 7062912
Abstract: An air separation unit separates air into an oxygen-rich and oxygen-deficient gas. Fuel gas and the oxygen-rich gas are preheated at heat exchangers through which hot flue gas flows. Combustion of the preheated fuel and oxygen-rich gases result in the hot flue gas. The hot flue gas is cooled at the heat exchangers and flows through a waste heat boiler. Water and/or steam flowing through the waste heat boiler absorbs energy from the cooled flue gas thereby producing heated steam. The heated steam flows through a turbine to produce power. The power is transferred to the air separation unit, thus reducing a power requirement of the air separation unit needed to separate the air.

  • Patent number: 7062915
Abstract: High-efficiency combustion engines, including Otto cycle engines, use a steam-diluted fuel charge at elevated pressure. Air is compressed, and water is evaporated into the compressed air via the partial pressure effect using waste heat from the engine. The resultant pressurized air-steam mixture then burned in the engine with fuel, preferably containing hydrogen to maintain flame front propagation. The high-pressure, steam-laden engine exhaust is used to drive an expander to provide additional mechanical power. The exhaust can also be used to reform fuel to provide hydrogen for the engine combustion. The engine advantageously uses the partial pressure effect to convert low-grade waste heat from engine into useful mechanical power. The engine is capable of high efficiencies (e.g. >50%), with minimal emissions.

  • Patent number: 7062916
Abstract: When an actual output power level of an engine is greater than a preset engine power demand due to the higher density of intake air in a cold environment, the control procedure of the invention controls a motor to raise a rotation speed of the engine with a throttle opening TH kept at a current level, so as to make the actual output power level of the engine substantially equal to the engine power demand (this is attained by, for example, a change of a target drive point from a point A to a point B). This arrangement effectively restrains a battery from being charged with an unexpectedly large electric power and prevents frequent changeover between the stop and the start of the engine with a significant variation in current state of charge (SOC) of the battery.

Abstract: A multi-stage thermoacoustic device includes a resonance tube mounted therein a plurality of stacks and a plurality of heat exchangers interlaid with each other adjacent to a second end of the resonance tube. A working fluid is filled in the resonance tube. A driver mounted on a first end of the resonance tube drives the working fluid oscillate in the resonance tube, the working fluid is compressed and expanded and causes temperature oscillation and thermal energy flowing from one end of the stack to the other end. The thermal energy, such as cooling capacity, is finally transferred outward through the heat exchangers on sides of the stacks. The multiple stacks and heat exchangers perform a multiple stage temperature gradient. More thermal energy is transferred, and the working efficiency is improved.

Abstract: A two-stage cryocooler (10) includes an ambient temperature portion (12), a first-stage temperature portion (14), and a second-stage temperature portion (16). The ambient temperature portion includes a surge volume (44) that is coupled to and in communication with the first-stage temperature portion. The surge volume may be coupled to a first-stage interface (36) of the first-stage temperature portion by use of an inertance tube (42). Locating the surge volume in the ambient temperature portion may advantageously reduce size and mass of the first-stage temperature portion. Also, thermal losses may be reduced by maintaining the surge volume at ambient temperature. Space and structural requirements for maintaining the system may be met more easily with the surge volume maintained in the ambient temperature portion of the two-stage cooler. The surge volume may be a separate unit, or may be a plenum or other chamber within an expander in the ambient temperature portion.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for the manipulation and management process of cryogen such that it controls both the fluid body movement as well as internal currents within the cryogen. Small volumes of a desired substance introduced into this managed cryogen for the production of frozen or solidified pellets or granules are better managed as to shape, size, deformation, frozen satellites, fines and agglomeration and overall desired quality. These benefits result from the dispersion of the gas produced, as well as the heat transferred, resulting from the introduction of the relatively hot substance to the cryogen. The fluid body movement assists in maintaining a distance between the individual solidifying pellets or granules thereby minimizing deformation as a result of physical contact. The output characteristics and desired quality of the pellets can be more effectively controlled and managed, as desired.
