Abstract: A method of refurbishing components such as brake rotors and drums is disclosed. The method may involve identifying, sorting and cleaning used or worn components. The components may then be blasted with an abrasive material to prepare them for a metal deposition process. Metal may then be added to the components using an arc spray gun, for example. The component may then be cryogenically treated to improve the wear characteristics of the component. The component may then be machined to place the component within a specified configuration. Components may be refurbished repeatedly in this manner so as to utilize resources more efficiently and reduce waste. Moreover, the components may exhibit improved wear characteristics over components manufactured by other methods.

Abstract: A tool and method for winding and forming a field coil for field assembly, such as a stator, includes separable tool halves defining a winding cavity therebetween. The winding cavity receives magnet wire that is wound therein, such as by rotating the tool or a winding nozzle. The magnet wire generally conforms to the shape of the winding cavity such that when the tool halves are separated, a field coil having a net shape is produced. Once the magnet wire is sufficiently deposited within the winding cavity, wires of the coil may be bonded together either through a resistive heating process such as by passing an electrical current through the coil or through other heating or chemical bonding methods to thereby maintain the net shape of the field coil once it is removed from the tool.

Abstract: Methods of manufacturing a rechargeable power cell are described. Methods include providing a slurry, paste, or dry mixture of negative electrode materials having low toxicity and including dispersants to prevent the agglomeration of particles that may adversely affect the performance of power cells. The methods utilize semi-permeable sheets to separate the electrodes and minimize formation of dendrites; and further provide electrode specific electrolyte to achieve efficient electrochemistry and to further discourage dendritic growth in the cell. The negative electrode materials may be comprised of zinc and zinc compounds. Zinc and zinc compounds are notably less toxic than the cadmium used in nickel cadmium batteries. The described methods may utilize some production techniques employed in existing NiCad production lines. Thus, the methods described will find particular use in an already well-defined and mature manufacturing base.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for aligning a laser beam in an ion source. A mounting member has a first end, a second end, and an axis. An awl is positioned on the axis and operably connected to the first end. A biasing member is arranged to urge the awl along the axis when the apparatus is mounted on the ion source to create a mark for aligning the laser beam.

Abstract: An alignment tool includes a base, a column, and a ball. The base is manufactured from a material with a high material density and includes a crosshair. The column is machined out of an optical transparent material and is attached to the base. The ball is positioned within the column at the end opposite to the base and above the center of the crosshair. The alignment tool may not only be used to properly align a radiation source with an area of interest of a part to be inspected but also as an alignment quality indicator providing information of proper alignment to an interpreter of the radiograph taken. Therefore, the need to take multiple exposures can be eliminated. The alignment quality indicator is suitable for, but not limited to, applications in the aerospace industry, such as nondestructive testing and evaluation of airframes during aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, and repair.

Abstract: A posture-checking device includes a reference-datum locating member including a reflective surface and at least one datum indicia which is movable with respect to a display device to setup the reference-datum locating member to provide an indication of proper posture for a specific user. The reference-datum locating member reflects a reference-datum fixedly associated with the user, for example, eyes, nose, mouth, in relation to the datum indicia. After initial setup, the visually checks the relationship of the reference-datum with respect to the datum indicia while interacting with the display device, and adjusts his or her posture as indicated by any discrepancy. A system may employ one or more reference-datum locating members for adjusting.

Abstract: A depth gauge for measuring the depth of a hole in a bone is disclosed having a digital readout for providing the measurement to a surgeon. The depth gauge has a probe with a tip inserted into and positioned proximate to the depth the hole, and has a reference member adjustably positioned relative the probe and against the bone proximate the hole. A measuring device is provided with the depth gauge for measuring the relative distance between the tip and the reference member, and the measuring device has a large, digital display for providing the relative distance.

Abstract: An instrument for measuring the depth of a hole in a bone or other tissue electronically, and for providing a convenient display of information relating to the depth. The surgical depth gauge comprises a probe insertable into the hole with an indented hook for positioning the distal end of the probe against a distal surface of the bone, and a reciprocating member slidably connected to the probe and positionable against a proximal surface of the bone. The probe cooperates with a sensor in an electronic circuit connected to the reciprocating member to produce an electronic signal that changes with the distance between the first surface and the second surface. The electronic circuit comprises a power source and a display. The instrument is robust to contamination and sterilization, and is designed for use by both left and right-handed surgeons.
