  • Patent number: 7174144
Abstract: Calibration of a phase locked loop and applications thereof within a radio frequency integrated circuit begins by determining an intersection of an up current and down current produced by a charge pump within the phase locked loop. The RFIC then determines a reference voltage corresponding to the intersection, which varies from an ideal voltage of VDD/2 based on process variations. The RFIC then offsets a control voltage to the voltage control oscillator (VCO) of the phase locked loop based on the reference voltage. Accordingly, by determining the offset of the actual intersection from the ideal intersection, the control voltage to the VCO may be adjusted thereby calibrating the phase locked loop for more linear performance.

  • Patent number: 7174170
Abstract: A wireless network node and a network provide for automatic self-deployment of the radio frequency channels without the need for preplanning. Each wireless network node adapts to the inclusion of a new node and to changing local conditions without requiring manual configuration at deployment or re-deployment. When a node is added to the network, it scans and finds its neighbors, and enters a frequency self-selection phase of its initialization process. The method for frequency self-selection involves transmitting and receiving a sequence of messages to/from neighbors and performing related processing within the controller unit of the node. Three sets of parameters are used in the frequency self-selection algorithm. The three parameter sets include a routing cost function, the frequencies in use by neighbors (and those that may be blocked), and the antenna beams used for the respective frequencies.

  • Patent number: 7174178
Abstract: Prediction of a future state of a channel from common pilot channel signals transmitted from a transceiver (e.g., a base station) may be formed at a mobile user equipment to control future transmission patterns of the transceiver at a specified time. The matching accuracy of the future transmission patterns to the channel may be improved by adaptively calculating channel prediction terms from past and present channel estimates. Using channel prediction terms, a wireless communication system with the base station having antennas operate in a closed loop transmit diversity mode, and a channel controller application at the mobile user equipment may select best antenna transmission characteristics for active antennas of the base station.

  • Patent number: 7174179
Abstract: A remote communications terminal accesses a terrestrial network or information source via a SATCOM link with an earth station hub linked to the network or information source. Information throughput adaptation (ITA) is employed on the SATCOM link to maximize information throughput over the SATCOM link while ensuring acceptable signal quality under varying rain fading conditions. Sufficient power margin is built into the SATCOM link such that, under severe rain fading conditions, the lowest system throughput rate still provides acceptable signal quality. Under lesser rain fading conditions, the data throughput rate is increased via more bandwidth efficient modulation and coding schemes permitted by the higher signal quality which results from greater power margin. The earth station hub and remote terminals monitor the signal quality and communicate to adaptively adjust the modulation and coding used on the forward and return links to maximize information throughput under varying rain fading conditions.

  • Patent number: 7174180
Abstract: Systems and techniques for scheduling of data transmission to remote mobile units so as to provide at least an acceptably low level of delay. A scheduler computes an urgency value for each data stream serving a mobile unit and sets the urgency value equal to the highest urgency value of a data stream serving the mobile unit. The scheduler computes a scheduling priority for each mobile unit based on a computation that takes into account the urgency value of the mobile unit and schedules the highest priority mobile unit for service, selecting the highest priority data stream serving the mobile unit scheduled for transmission. The urgency value for a data stream depends on the sensitivity of the data stream to delay and the delay experienced by the data stream. Computation of the urgency value may take into account a delay limit associated with the data stream.
