Abstract: A borided titanium article can include a titanium mass having titanium monoboride whiskers infiltrating inward from a surface of the titanium mass to form an integral surface hardened region. The titanium mass can be almost any titanium based metal or alloy such as high purity titanium, commercial grade titanium, ?-titanium alloy, ?+? titanium alloy, ?-titanium alloy, titanium composite, and combinations thereof. Borided titanium articles can be formed by methods which include providing a titanium mass, contacting a surface of the titanium mass with a boron source medium, and heating the titanium mass and boron source medium to a temperature from about 700° C. to about 1600° C. The boron source medium can include a boron source and an activator selected to provide growth of titanium monoboride whiskers.

  • Patent number: 7264683
Abstract: The present invention relates to a casting method which employs rapid solidification of metal, rare-earth metal or the like, as well as to a casting apparatus and a cast alloy. A centrifugal casting method includes the steps of pouring a molten material onto a rotary body; sprinkling the molten material by the effect of rotation of the rotary body; and causing the sprinkled molten material to be deposited and to solidify on the inner surface of a rotating cylindrical mold. The axis of rotation of the rotary body and the axis of rotation of the cylindrical mold are caused not to run parallel to each other. The centrifugal casting method can attain a decrease in average deposition rate. As a result, generation of the dendritic ?Fe phase or generation of a segregation phase of Mn or the like is suppressed, thereby realizing a high-performance R-T-B-type rare-earth magnet alloy.

  • Patent number: 7264689
Abstract: A method of continuously loading fibers in a fiber suspension with calcium carbonate. The fibers include a fiber wall surrounding a lumen. A reactant solid in the form of calcium oxide and/or calcium hydroxide is mixed into the fiber suspension with a resultant initial process pH of between 11 and 12. The fiber suspension is transported at a consistency of between approximately 15 and 30% into an inner chamber of a closed reactor. A reactant gas is injected into the reactor, whereby the reactor is pressurized to a pressure between 5 and 150 psi. A temperature of the fiber suspension within the reactor is controlled at a range between ?10° C. and 80° C. The fibers within the fiber suspension are loaded with calcium carbonate as a result of a chemical reaction between the reactant solid and the reactant gas in the reactor over a predetermined reaction time.

  • Patent number: 7264704
Abstract: It is described an electrolysis cell wherein the anodic dissolution of metals is carried out, in particular of metals characterised by a relatively high oxidation potential, such as copper, or metals with high hydrogen overpotential, for example tin, aimed at restoring both the concentration of said metals, and the pH in galvanic baths used in electroplating processes with insoluble anodes. The cell of the invention comprises an anodic compartment, wherein the metal to be dissolved acts as a consumable anode, and a cathodic compartment, containing a cathode for hydrogen evolution, separated by a cation-exchange membrane. The coupling of the cell of the invention with the electroplating cell allows a strong simplification of the overall process and a sensible reduction in the relevant costs.

  • Patent number: 7264705
Abstract: An improved aqueous cathodic electrocoating composition that contains an anti-crater agent which is a water-reducible polyester resin having an acid value less than 40 mg KOH/g. The water-reducible polyester is the reaction product of (1) a hydroxy cyclic carbonate; (2) a polycarboxylic acid anhydride; (3) optional monofunctional epoxy resin; (4) a polyfunctional isocyanate resin; and, (5) a polyamine compound containing tertiary amine and either primary or secondary functionality. The reaction product is neutralized in the presence of acid and water to convert the tertiary amine groups to water-dilutable groups. Hydrolyzable silane groups can also be incorporated into the reaction product to further enhance its crater resistance property. • Patent number: 7264709
Abstract: A method and apparatus for conditioning a sensor to measure an oxidation reduction potential of an aqueous solution such that the time to obtain a reliable oxidation reduction potential measurement is substantially reduced. Such conditioning is often necessary when the sensor is moved from potentiometric equilibrium (e.g., the sensor is cleaned, the sensor is exposed to air, and the like). The method may comprise generating a current through a measurement electrode and a reference electrode of the sensor for a duration of time. Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing organic contaminants from an aqueous phase in which the contaminant is solubilized. In the method the aqueous phase is passed through a fluid-pervious filtration media which has been infused with an absorbtion composition comprising a homogeneous thermal reaction product of an oil component selected from the group consisting of glycerides, fatty acids, alkenes, and alkynes, and a methacrylate or acrylate polymer component. Abstract: Laser-induced phase-separation polymerization of a porous acrylate polymer is used for in-situ fabrication of dialysis membranes inside glass microchannels. A shaped 355 nm laser beam is used to produce a porous polymer membrane with a thickness of about 15 ?m, which bonds to the glass microchannel and form a semi-permeable membrane. Differential permeation through a membrane formed with pentaerythritol triacrylate was observed and quantified by comparing the response of the membrane to fluorescein and fluorescently tagging 200 nm latex microspheres. Differential permeation was observed and quantified by comparing the response to rhodamine 560 and lactalbumin protein in a membrane formed with SPE-methylene bisacrylamide. The porous membranes illustrate the capability for the present technique to integrate sample cleanup into chip-based analysis systems.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods for separating one or more components of interest from a sample containing particulates and soluble materials. The method comprises the steps of: (a) filtering a sample through silica filter media whose surface silanol groups have reacted with one or more silanes, and (b) simultaneously capturing particulates and binding a soluble component to the silica filter media. The bound soluble component of interest is subsequently eluted from the silica filter media. In one embodiment of the invention, unwanted soluble materials are captured by the treated silica filter media and desired component of interest is recovered from the flow-through. In another embodiment of the invention, different components of interest are recovered from both the eluate and the flow-through. Preferred treated silica filter media are silane-treated rice hull ash or diatomaceous earth with functional quaternary ammonium group or functional sulphonate group.
