Abstract: A low speed alternating current motor having motor shaft speeds of about 300 is provided, and such motor has application in numerous industries and devices, such as, for example, in top drive drilling systems. Because of the low shaft speed, mechanical speed reduction equipment may not be necessary. In addition, the motor shaft may be hollow to facilitate the flow of fluid, such as, for example, drilling mud.

Abstract: Drill bit with multiple stages of durability and ROP characteristics is disclosed. The drill bit has multiple layers of cutters established by deploying the cutters on blades of different heights or maintaining the blades at the same height and deploying the cutters to have different heights on one or more blades. Each layer provides independent bottom hole coverage and has independent stabilization, ROP, and durability characteristics so as to effectively drill through different subsurface formations. Cutters deployed on the different layers have their respective centers at substantially different radial positions. Due to the different radial positions, cutters in different layers cut different swaths in the subsurface formation. Cutters in different layers may also have different initial peripheral portions or shear lengths, resulting in different impact resistance characteristics for the different layers.

Abstract: An angle sensor enables the angle of orientation of a body to be determined. A force sensor measures the reaction for of the tip of the body in contact with the medium in almost continuous manner. The orientation of the reaction force with respect to the medium plane is determined from measurement data from said sensors. A vector tangential to the path is determined by projection of the reaction force in the medium plane. The path can be determined by mathematical integration of the tangential vector or by double mathematical integration of the tangential acceleration which can be determined for example by the scalar product of a tangential unitary vector obtained by normalization of the tangential vector and of data representative of the acceleration supplied by the accelerometer.

Abstract: In a hybrid electric vehicle, an output shaft of an engine can be coupled with a rotary shaft of an electric motor of which a driving force can be transmitted to driving wheels. A power cut relay cuts off power supply from a power source to a starter motor through a starting switch when its contact is open. When the switch is shifted to a starting position, an ECU opens the contact of the relay and starts the engine by means of the electric motor, or starts the engine by means of the starter motor by closing the contact of the relay without starting the engine by means of the electric motor. If a specific failure is detected by a failure detection unit when the switch is shifted to the starting position, the ECU starts the engine by the starter motor without starting the engine by the electric motor.

Abstract: A diagnostic control device for a hybrid vehicle is provided for shortening the time required for a failure diagnosis of an evaporation purge system. After introducing the inlet-pipe's negative pressure into the evaporation purge system 51, the evaporation control unit 52 diagnoses failure states concerning the evaporation purge system 51 such as a leak by detecting changes in inner tank pressure over a prescribed time. In order to shorten such failure diagnosis control time, a motor generator 12 is driven to assist the engine when introducing the inlet-pipe's negative pressure into the evaporation purge system 51. With such assist-driving, it becomes possible to reduce engine load, therefore, the throttle valve 67 of the engine 11 can be controlled to be on the closed side, making it possible to create sufficient inlet-pipe's negative pressure.

Abstract: Apparatus for lifting a hatch which can pivot around a pivot axis, especially a hatch of a motor vehicle, by means of a piston-cylinder unit. The piston-cylinder unit has a closed cylinder filled with a pressurized fluid, the interior of the cylinder 6 being divided by a piston into a first working chamber and a second working chamber. A piston rod passes through the second working chamber and is guided to the outside through a seal at the end of the cylinder and then hinged to the hatch, whereas the other end of the cylinder is hinged to a stationary component. A through-opening leading from the first working chamber to the second working chamber, is provided in the piston. The through-opening can be opened by an electrically actuated valve.

Abstract: In a strut type shock absorber (1), a lower cap (2) is welded onto an inner circumferential surface of an outer shell (3) at a step (16) formed in a retreated position from an axial tip of the outer shell (3). The axial tip of the outer shell (3) is welded onto the inner circumferential surface of a knuckle bracket (6) which holds the outer shell (3). Since welding of the lower cap (2) onto the outer shell (3) and welding of the knuckle bracket (6) onto the outer shell (3) are conducted at different positions, the lower cap (2) is welded onto the outer shell (3) without suffering from blowholes irrespective of the material forming the knuckle bracket (6), and as a result, a weld bead (17) having a high degree of air-tightness is formed.
