  • Patent number: 7303579
Abstract: An apparatus for adjusting the body temperature of a patient comprises an enclosure defining an interior space for receiving at least a portion of a patient's body therein. The enclosure is adapted for substantially sealingly enclosing the portion of the patient's body within the interior space with the enclosure. Heat transfer liquid may then be circulated through the interior space of the enclosure via an inlet and an outlet for flow over the patient's body in direct liquid contact therewith to promote heat transfer between the patient's body and said heat transfer liquid. The heat transfer liquid may be either warmer or cooler than the patient's body temperature, to either warm or cool the portion. Controlled cooling may be employed to induce therapeutic hypothermia, while controlled warming may be employed to counteract unintended hypothermia.

  • Patent number: 7303580
Abstract: A stent delivery system includes a stent having at least one eyelet and at least one rivet and a holder supporting the stent, wherein the holder includes a first section having a first diameter and a second section having a second diameter. A sheath covers the stent and the holder. The rivets are attached to each of the eyelets. A first inner diameter of the stent at the position of the rivets is smaller than a second inner diameter of the stent at other positions because the rivets protrude inwardly. A shoulder is formed on the holder due to the difference between the first diameter and the second diameter of the holder. The shoulder is positioned distally adjacent the rivets. The shoulder interferes with the protruding rivets, thereby restraining the longitudinal movement of the stent relative to the holder. Although the sheath is pulled back, the stent does not jump out of the stent delivery system.

  • Patent number: 7303581
Abstract: An implantable artificial heart apparatus which has no moving parts. It employs the technology of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) to induce flow of human blood. An MHD propulsion unit is a device which applies magnetic and electric fields to blood to propel the conductive fluid through the body's circulatory system. Electricity is passed through the blood via electrodes at the same junction where the blood is exposed to the magnetic field. Charged ions that move from anode to cathode create their own corresponding magnetic fields which are either attracted or repelled by the externally applied magnetic field. The result is propulsion in a uniform direction with the moving ions, in effect, dragging fluid molecules with them. A single MHD propulsion unit performs the combined functions of the atrium and the ventricle of the human heart.

  • Patent number: 7303586
Abstract: A knee prosthesis includes a femoral component with condylar sliding surfaces which are rigidly interconnected, a tibial component provided with a tibial platform which is linked to it in a non-rotatable manner and has tibial sliding surfaces which cooperate with the condylar sliding surfaces, and a coupling device which forms a flexion bearing with the femoral component and a rotational bearing with the tibial component, the axis of said rotational bearing being inclined relative to the tibial direction. In order to achieve a more advantageous force distribution in the prosthesis and a restoring force upon rotation of the prosthesis parts, the prosthesis is configured such that the normal with respect to the area of the tibial sliding surfaces which cooperates with the condylar sliding surfaces and transmits most of the load in the extension position is less inclined relative to the tibial direction than is the axis of the rotational bearing, as seen in a side view or sagittal section.

  • Patent number: 7303600
Abstract: An unexpanded perlite ore polishing composition is shown. The composition comprises base material having grains of unexpanded perlite ore of a selected distribution of particle sizes which undergo fracturing of the grains as a function of an abrasive force applied to the base material. The selected distribution of particle sizes includes a significant volume of grains of unexpanded perlite ore having a (d90) particle size in a range of about 101 to about 229 ?m. The base material is responsive to an abrasive force being applied thereto during polishing resulting in continued fracturing of the grains of unexpanded perlite ore to yield a final polishing composition having a sufficiently low level of abrasiveness under said abrasive force making it suitable for use in polishing. Compositions for polishing acrylic dentures and CRT tube surfaces using the unexpanded perlite ore polishing composition and methods for polishing the same are also shown.

  • Patent number: 7303602
Abstract: A diesel particulate filter including a microwave-absorbing target within a waveguide cavity. The cavity accepts microwave-frequency electromagnetic radiation through input couplers 90 degrees out of phase with each other to excite circular polarization heating modes. In this ink, the mildew resistant properties are not impaired, and the ink exhibits excellent ozone resistance. Furthermore, the formation of a precipitate is prevented in the ink although the thiazole-based compound is used. In the ink for ink-jet recording, as copper phthalocyanine dyes, two types of dyes are used together with a thiazole-based compound. Furthermore, about 1 mol % to about 20 mol % of the total counter ions in the two types of copper phthalocyanine dyes are ammonium ions or organic ammonium ions.

  • Patent number: 7303623
Abstract: A lime pellet for use in asphalt applications can include lime fines and an asphalt-compatible binder. The pellet is characterized as having a rigid structure with a dimension greater than about 1.5 mm and being compatible with a hot mix asphalt so as to dissolve in liquid asphalt. Optionally, the binder is characterized by having less than about 50% by weight of total binder being sulfur, or the pellet is characterized by having lime in an amount of at least 31% by weight, or being storage-stable and agglomeration resistant. The pellet is manufactured by mixing the lime fines with the asphalt-compatible binder and forming pellets therefrom. The pellets are useful for conditioning an end product of hot mix asphalt during the manufacture of such an asphalt. The method of conditioning includes providing the lime pellet, and mixing the lime pellet with a hot mix asphalt ingredient, wherein the ingredient is at least one of an aggregate or asphalt cement.

  • Patent number: 7303626
Abstract: Photonic crystal units (10a, 10b, and 10c) are formed by an optical molding process using a photocurable resin, and partitions (11) are provided at the boundaries therebetween. The voids in each photonic crystal unit are filled with a second substance containing ceramic particles dispersed therein to form a filled portion 2. A plurality of three-dimensional periodic structure units containing the first and second substances distributed with three-dimensional periodicity are arranged so as to have different ratios between the dielectric constants of the first and second substances. Therefore, present invention provides a three-dimensional periodic structure having a wide photonic band gap which could not be obtained in a conventional three-dimensional periodic structure.

  • Patent number: 7303627
Abstract: A method is described for making an especially not-(111)-oriented low-stress large-volume crystal having a glide plane with reduced stress birefringence and more uniform refractive index. The method includes growing and tempering the crystal while heating and/or cooling to form a temperature gradient in order to relax stresses arising along the glide plane. During the tempering the heating and/or cooling occurs by heat transfer in a heat transfer direction and the heat transfer direction or temperature gradient is oriented at an angle of from 5° to 90° to the glide plane. Crystals with a uniform refractive index with variations of less than 0.025×10?6 (RMS value) are produced by the method.
